Agreed. I was asked privately what I saw of Rob after my post the other day. My response was basically "He did fine, but I didn't see anything that put him over the other guards." I thought Rob did well with the group he was with, but he's not starter material and to be honest...its ok to let him watch the game, get some playing time, and grow. I will offer that I think Rob is definitely a player that can be used to make Green become better. Rob is definitely good enough to take Green's minutes if he starts playing hero ball..that's the way it should be. I want the "best" players starting, but too often we discount experience in favor of production (be it offense or defense). As long as Green/Durham show they can run the offense effectively and defend with purpose, let Rob grow and become a force.

  6. Recruiting threads before this FBI scandal were so frustrating. I’m glad Pandora’s box has been lifted ajar and people see what has been going on for decades. Crean’s tenure was interesting because he landed a few recruits that I’m convinced were not clean AND he recruited a gazillion of them that were dirty that either he steered away from or they opted against Crean and Indiana. I’d love to be a fly on the wall to know some of our own skeletons in the closet. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

  7. I don't know if it's been mentioned.... Don Fischer was interviewed and he stated that this is the deepest team he has seen since 1975. Don't know where I read or heard this but it excited me.

  8. How can you not love Victor Oladipo and Cozy Zeller? “Honestly, we felt like we didn’t give that school what we wanted to give them, which was a national championship,” Oladipo told reporters earlier this week. “Giving back to them and doing that, it doesn’t necessarily fill the void, but it just makes it feel a little better. Just wanted to give back to the guys like guys before us gave back to us.” https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/college/indiana/2018/10/03/victor-oladipo-cody-zeller-give-iu-basketball-locker-room/1510259002/

  10. I feel recruiting threads since have been equally frustrating. There are some that dedicate every post to insinuate every player is being paid even if it’s not about that player but the school recruiting any player. Recruiting threads have turned into gossip girls. When it warrants it I get it. Like this thread, I get it. But recruiting threads like you said in your opening sentence I don’t get. 16. ‘I handed (Brian Bowen Sr.) $19,400 in cash...to ensure that Brian Bowen would attend University of Louisville’ - financial planner Munish Sood Pitino's comments immediately after the commitment: "We got lucky on this one," Pitino told Terry Meiners of News Radio 840. "I had an AAU director call me and ask me if I'd be interested in a player (Bowen). I saw him against another great player from Indiana. I said 'Yeah, I'd be really interested.' They had to come in unofficially, pay for their hotel, pay for their meals. We spent zero dollars recruiting a five-star athlete who I loved when I say him play. In my 40 years of coaching this is the luckiest I've been." https://www.thescore.com/ncaab/news/1314238

  17. Wow. Given your moniker, I would expect something less pessimistic. Have you been paying attention to the way he's recruiting and the success he's having? He won't get them all, nor will anyone, but the days of Izzo getting "whoever he wants" are over.

  18. Adam Zagoria has also been doing a lot of tweeting about the trial in addition to Dan Wetzel. One of Z's latest tweets implicates Spiece: Bowen Sr. said he got "like $5-8,000 for him [Bowen Jr.] playing with MeanStreets." Said Spiece "was offering like 18 grand." After I typed this post, my eyes locked on Cody's quote below that I use for my signature. The irony of it all.

If this is true then coaching will make the difference. How do you win when you’re deeper than your opponents? Defense. You press, trap, and play at 100% on every possession. Winning time will be in the second half of games where talent is evenly matched otherwise. Just ask the General.

  26. Great post. Different layers for sure. I dont know what to make of it all. That’s why it’s interesting. As far as Romeo and Indiana goes. My opinion only, it’s completely a hands off thing from Indiana. Adidas funding the AAU program may be all that is relatable here. I’m not sure I even care, but I’m glad the slimier programs like Kansas couldn’t get him. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

  27. Just a reminder that we landed Romeo in the aftermath of all this. Like the earth was still smoldering, and Romeo took steps to distance himself from Pitino and UL. IN THIS CASE, I think we can safely assume the recruitment to Indiana was clean, almost as result of the current case hitting so close to home. Since Romeo, we've got Armaan Franklin, and a growing list of rejections. I would not take Romeo's commitment as some prima facie evidence that IU is now entering the game as you see it. Otherwise, I agree that this stuff is layered and not as easy as a coach paying a player.

  28. Yeah most of the time, too much stock is taken into recruits and their social media choices. However, this is significant imo. He basically puts down the Michigan State visit with his like of Franklin’s comment. As Mdn said, worst kept secret since Yogi. Absolute fact

  29. I'm fine with it. This is a rebuilding year and year for experience and growth from the young guys. Get another high pick on top of all that money and we could/should be back to playoff contention next year.

Play at 100% on every possession? For sure. Use the bench as a motivator? You betcha. Press and trap? Not going to happen - that is the antithesis of the packline defense. The packline has a few basic principles: Always pressure the ball, never double beyond the three point line unless the ballhandler gives up his dribble, play off your man when he's without the ball beyond the three point line, force drivers into the lane where help awaits (and never allow baseline drives), an the help defenders should slap at the ball and double in the lane.

The first step will be McBob actually taking those shots with confidence. Defenses will be focusing on Morgan and Romeo, hopefully Green if he's improved. That'll leave McBob, Fitzner, and others with open looks. If we can consistently hit those open looks, unlike last season, we'll be a dangerous team offensively. It'll also force the defense to rotate and give Smith and Durham open lanes to slash for easy buckets. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Maybe so. I guess we'll see when the games start. It feels so close now that HH is over :) They also hyped McRoberts as "the hardest working man in college basketball" at Hoosier Hysteria and named him a captain...my guess is he gets the start in the first game and can either keep it or lose it as the season progresses.

  39. Apparently a major part of the defense during opening arguments is that the shoe company employees on trial could not have defrauded universities, because the universities were part of their effort to pay recruits. That theory will be buttressed by recitation of the shoe companies' discussions with coaching staffs which encouraged player payments. And THAT is where the juicy testimony will flow. The shoe company defendants are fully embracing that they broke NCAA regulations left and right. The government's case theory will counter; that these complicit coaches were rogue employees acting in direct contradiction of their respective university's compliance departments and documented policies. Soooo .... the testimony that exonerates the defendants and potentially produces "not guilty" verdicts could be extraordinarily damaging to many big name coaches.

  42. Pre-season action last night and Mr. Ferrell had quite an opening act for his new team. 30 minutes and 26 points on 9-14 FG's and 6-9 on 3's. Troy with his new team the Pelicans had 11 pts. in 14 min. but was just 4-11 from the field. And Vonleh also with a new team this year, the Knicks, had 8 pts. in 12 min. and 5 reb. Am I the only one that has a really hard time associating Vonleh with IU basketball?
