I do not buy this at all.  That maybe the story that he is telling.  But in no way shape or form did Brownell turn down the job.  I doubt he was even offered the job.

Ive definitely been a hard critic on DDV but after seeing how good the BIG ten is this year it makes me believe he didnt do a bad job of coaching with a terribly constructed roster.

I'm willing to withhold judgement on Devries until after this coming year.  I am concerned with our second half collapses and how much of those can be contributed to not being able to adjust after the other teams adjusted.  Devries seems like a good guy, and I want him to succeed. However, I'm getting older so I hope we can determine if someone is the guy in 2-3 years and don't have to wait 4 years.

If you're gonna play the woulda, shoulda, coulda, game, it makes more sense to analyze who we "shoulda" hired when the job was actually open ie Davis, Sampson, Crean and especially Archie and Woody. So for me it's not a matter of "we should have hired May" it's more why didn't we hire {insert coach} when we hired {insert fired coach} especially after Archie flopping so hard? That being said, to cherry pick one or two of the more recent questionable decisions (or lack thereof) is bit of recency bias when considering the number of mistakes or missed opportunities with both hires and players over the past 30 years.

I think Branham will make or break DeVries tenure at IU. If he can be a Yogi, a Braden Smith, someone that can come in a lead and create consistency and make others better for 4 years we will be able to build on that. If he isn’t that guy, it could be a tough few years left for him

Because Michigan is likely to win the title, it makes it ok that Devries got worked by Northwestern twice?  Or got throttled by Ohio State?  Or that he got beat embarrassingly at Minnesota?

After a disappointing season, he has redeemed himself some with this portal class. Now he needs to get them to gel and win 25 games this season with one of them being NW. But first he’s at the Office Lounge having a beer with his wife. My brother is bartending and he said they just walked in. I told him to buy them a round on me.

Yep he’s won the off-season.  He’s got us to Notre Dame Football status.  Now the real work begins. 
 

That’s insane I used to go there with my roommates lived right down the road.  Good for him.

It’d be funnier if we won 25 but still couldn’t beat NW…in a perverse way.

It’s basically the same prices from the 90’s. Lot more college kids these days because of a bunch of new apartment buildings.

You really think so?  Or did he do such a bad job with roster construction last season that we had to bring in a GM to do that part of the job for him?  Because that's the optics here.

IU was always bringing in a GM regardless of how the coach did in the first year.    That was reported before the season even started that was a position they were looking to fill down the road

You just can’t help yourself. No, that isn’t the optics here. Having a full staff in place when the portal opened (along with an increased NIL budget) has certainly helped. No clue how much of a role the new GM has played, but several of our incoming players have ties to the staff.

GMs are getting common in CBB.  To name a few schools with one: Michigan, UConn, and Illinois.  And there are many others.  This trend will likely continue.

Everything is of course contingent on results, but bringing in a GM is a smart move.  I don't see the issue here.
