It’s a crapshoot The fact that people think IU can’t win a bidding war still blows my mind. Cuban, Simon-Skjodt, Irsay, Cook… I think that’s at least $20B in net worth. Lord knows how many other millionaires. Then there’s the 800K+ other alumni plus the money that comes along with playing in the B1G. If we miss on Sales, I HIGHLY doubt a lack of funds will be the reason. Quote

On a podcast Cig hinted we were around 25-27mm. OSU, Oregon and Texas were all allegedly in the 40mm range. I absolutely think we could get outbid and/or decide against giving a freshman x percentage of our total “payroll”. cthomas, 8bucks and skhoosier2 3 Quote

I could see our staff saying they’d rather spread the money around or don’t believe in cutting a massive check for one guy, but I don’t believe for a second that they couldn’t come up with the money with a few phone calls if they really wanted to. I have no idea about the NIL/donor situation, but IU sure seemed to run out of $$ for basketball. Obviously not the defending NC's, but still a dynamic wing and solid back-up PG & C and we're looking at a likely legit top 15 team. Again, not exactly apples to apples, but not sure the well is as deep as we might hope. ronzo4IU 1 Quote

Pagoda Posted June 25 Posted June 25 It’s always possible to get outbid, who knows what another school may offer, but I think we’ll be competitive on the money side. We are a finalist so our offer(s) to date have been enough. Our ‘26 roster budget is way way up from ‘25. A recent pod Cig said we’re top third in the B1G in resources. We just got the #2 portal WR. Monshun is the same kinda recruitment with similar money. So, it’s doable. Quote

I think we have money but not unlimited money. We have had a number of highly ranked guys on campus that ultimately went somewhere else allegedly somewhat (if not completely) due to the bag. The most recent being the 4 star OL Indiana kid that went to MSU of all places. skhoosier2 1 Quote

How do you pay a hs guy you aren't POSITIVE won't sit your bench for a year learning. You can theorize all you want this is a day 1 guy, but sh*t happens and they get in, don't pick up the system, have some type of injury, aren't quite as advertised, et al. Now granted Cig is a master evaluator so likely it wouldn't but that's money wrapped up in potential over production. I can't blame the kids for chasing the money. Nothing is guaranteed. But also if you see the vision and the role you will have on the team and are willing to put in the work/compete then you could end up with a bigger payday in the future from IU and/or the NFL. Quote

I don't think I would say that the problem was that IU didn't have the money for some of them, but that CCC didn't see the value in spending it there. You get a great RB on a OV, but he wants so much money you can go get a plug and play guy from the portal for the same price. Which do you do? Smart money's probably on the portal. MSU may have dropped a bag on Caleb Johnson, but the rumor seems to have just been speculative. Every time a kid commits somewhere that is unexpected, there are posts on boards about how he must have got a bag dropped on him. Not saying it isn't true in Caleb's case, or in quite a few other players cases. Napleshoosier and TrueHoosier62 2 Quote
Brass Cannon Posted June 25 Posted June 25 The difference with Sales and why we might pay him is he will almost certainly start week 1 freshmen year Quote

This article also states that Cig likes to split the NIL $$ pot 45% portal players, 45% returning players and 10% high school players. If he is adhering to that ratio again this year it sort of backs-up losing some of the higher rated recruits due to larger bags. 10% spread among the current 16 recruits probably doesn’t leave a ton for the remaining targets (wouldn’t be surprised if an exception is made to at least make us competitive for Sales). Whatever….Cig has proven his method works. Napleshoosier, Lebowski and skhoosier2 3 Quote
