Richard Pitino Jr. and Ben Johnson are living examples that you can be a good coach, but if you're at a program that gives little support it won't go well.

That’s such a false narrative. Minnesota had over half their 22 basketball fans dress up as farm animals for games in the barn. What more could you possibly need?

McCollum to Iowa.

It’s interesting watching the mental gymnastics with Iowa fans on X who have now revised all of their opinions on DeVries vs McCollum.   DeVries wasn’t the coach they wanted very badly just a week ago. McCollum is a great coach but he comes with a fair amount of risk as well.

I feel like he was one of those coaches that benefited heavily from being able to cheat.  Now that everyone can pay players, he is just average.

He won 68% of his games and 67% of his Big East games during his second stint at Xavier. I don’t think he’s a top tier coach, but I think it was a good hire for Texas.

I think he's still a good coach but had not figured out NIL at Xavier (and NIL is probably very bad for programs like Xavier).

But for sure would not consider him a home run hire or sure thing. He's only had one year in his last 6 that anyone would consider successful.

He had the NIL all figured out at Arizona ... dude was light years ahead of the NCAA.

Haha oh I know. But he also had a hell of a run at Xavier before that and definitely wasn't paying players then

He was/is a hard working coach that stresses fundamentals and pushes players.  On top of the extra resources.  I think the shine is worn off but Texas could do much worse.  With their resources he’ll be able to build the team he wants and will do better than his predecessor.

One note on Ben McCollum that I read....his philosophy in building a winning culture early is to get wins rolling.  To that point, his teams have not played a true road game in the last nine seasons (Drake played in a non-con tournament this year and went 3-0 on a neutral floor).  So his last eight years at Northwest Missouri State his teams only played home games in non-con.

Will be interesting to see what he will do with Iowa's schedule going forward.

I’m sure he’ll do really well there but it’s gonna be interesting to see how his 1st couple of years go. Running the Moe system is great because it’s basically unscoutable, but your guys really have to be in synch or you can throw the ball all over the gym. Will be curious to watch how quickly he can find the right guys and get them coached up to play that way

Interesting. We all paid close attention to wins and losses, but ignored who those wins and losses came against.

Iowa will want to play a reasonably tough non-conference schedule, if for no other reason to build a tournament résumé. I doubt they'll schedule only cupcakes. Maybe in his first season.
