Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

Recommended Posts

One of the things mentioned in the analysis video a few pages back was CDD ability to adapt and adjust.  Back in the Drake days Tucker was good enough to create his own shots.  When they moved to WVU, the talent was better, so they ran him off a series of screens to get him looks.   That’s what I like.  Will adjust to personal in order just win baby.   Can’t wait to see how this roster comes together in the next month.

Luckily Tennessee football and WV basketball aren’t really comparable. And USC football was in a completely different position at that time than IUBB is now. Also he was quite a bit younger and had already flamed out in the NfL. Pretty awful comparison honestly.

Totally agree. I loved the point Parrish was trying to make but the Tenn-USC example wasn’t really the same.

Just want to take a minute and apologize to WVU people for continuing to take big dumps on them. They wanted to fire their FB coach and hire Cig (alumn) but instead we did. Then the very next year we take their BB coach. Don't feel too bad for them though if they get Calhoun because that dude will do well there I think.

I have no idea who this guy is, but he’s really good and I like this a lot.. The only thing I would quibble with, and he’d have no reason to know since he’s as not invested as we are, but since DeVries made it clear in the presser that Dolson was communicating during the season I doubt there were many guys at all that Scott would have burned through before landing on DeVries. Stevens and Drew, sure, probably Otzelberger, but I sort of think DeVries was the next name and if he expressed real interest anybody else subsequently was a contingency. I know we had pages and pages of “Scott loves McCollum” stuff, but I would think if that were really, really a thing he would have waited a week. He had the time to do that. I really think once you eliminate the no hopers this was his Guy.

Sounds about right.

The only other possibility is he had Devries on his list grouped with someone like McCollum or somebody else in the tourney. And when IU and WVU were out of the tournament the timing was imminent. You can’t wait on McCollum at that point.

And the only reason I mention that is because there was a lot of chatter about CDD and Iowa Monday, CDD possibly flying out to meet them, etc… If Dolson waited and missed out on CDD and then couldn’t land McCollum next week it would be catastrophic. So you pull the trigger on the hire you can actually make today.

which is another reason the portal shouldn't open till after the Natty...

It would be a dream to, with some consistency, beat more talented teams because we were better coached and had a better gameplan.  We have rarely had this since RMK -- Kelvin could do it but wasn't here long, maybe Crean did a little bit but certainly not often, and with our last two coaches it was very rare.

I saw a drill DeVries ran and it reminded me of the cover on the rim drill Sampson used to do.  I think we will have more fight and shooters this year.

Watched the Parrish video.  Some good stuff.  Interesting comp of Lane Kiffen going to USC after 1 year at Tenn.  Hopefully this goes better than that situation.

I have actually been thinking of a different USC comp this whole time: Pete Carroll.

USC football had been lost in the woods for a while. They were a sleeping giant that was turned down by everyone and were down to about their 5th choice when a talented young coach named Pete Carroll, who really wanted the job, said yes. The rest is history as he built one of the most dominant programs of the 00’s.

Sometimes you just have to get lucky with timing.

The portal date is absurd. A more cynical person might think it was done intentionally so by the NCAA because they obviously hate the whole thing and want public opinion to shift against it.  It’s literally about the dumbest possible time they could pick on the calendar.

Feels pretty weird not checking this board every 5 minutes trying to find out who the coach is lol. Absolutely love this hire

.....funny, my wife said, "What are you going to do now that we have a new coach?

I said, hmmm,.....I don't know." lol.!!!!

She looked at me shaking her head.

I hope he’s retained. It appeared his work with Ballo (and I’m sure others) was valuable.

Not if you look at Ballo’s career stats. His FT % was better than last year, but just back to his career average. Assists were up slightly, but shooting % and rebounds were down. Scoring average the same.

I've seen a couple of Coach DeVries interviews since being named. He always says something that I think most of us know and have been saying for years. You build a team, not just a collection of talent. I really think that has been the problem with IU basketball for awhile now, we get/have talented players, they just don't mesh together as a team so well. Another thing he stresses is the locker room. He says sometimes it is tempting to get a player with talent even though he doesn't really fit and might be bad for the locker room. He is willing to pass on certain guys no matter how talented if they pose a threat to the locker room....I love that!

Yeah we were actually on the opposite end with the last two guys.   NW and Nebraska come to mind.

Sorry, long musings…

Ok, CDD has grown on me. He isn’t a big fish or white whale we were all hoping for, but those are few and far between and normally set in there current positions. Even Kentucky and Louisville had to dip below the “big name” hire and they did just fine.  And, we arguably could have had a higher tier choice had we acted last year.

But, this guy just seems to check all the boxes. He’s not only won at every stop, he’s greatly improved the programs from when he started.  He is obviously ready to tackle the challenges of the “fishbowl”, when Archie looked like a scared little (and I mean little - insert lowering the mic meme) boy. He runs a disciplined offense and defense and seems to be adaptable to in-game situations and roster construction, which will certainly appeal to the fan base. His players play hard, which will also appeal to the fan base.

Because of all of that, he has a plan. he has a system in place, executes it, and it has worked everywhere he’s been. I’ve been watching some WV games the past couple days and we would have been ecstatic if IU played like them over the past few years. If he can bring that to IU, he will do well. Well enough to get “over the hump” of the sweet 16, we’ll see in time. But I can see that it would translate to consistent 20 win seasons, upper third of the B1G, and not being last 4 in at best.

IF he can gain appeal to the Indiana high school coaches, and show even the slightest more interest in recruiting that Woody did, which won’t be difficult, he’ll start winning over the fan base.  Not being so confrontational with the fans, not allowing his players to tell the fans to “chill”, and not making the same tired excuses for losses will certainly help.  Then, when wins start coming, and players are showing some heart and fight, and are proud to play for Indiana and not the bag, the fan base will be won

Everyone is going to have different opinions and even disappointment right now. That’s just my rant after a couple day to digest. Is there a chance he flops, certainly. Is there a chance that he can at least get us competitive and fun to watch again?  I’m going to go with the latter.

Sorry, if I could explain… wasn’t coming at you if it felt like that.

Was just trying to share that it might be better to go with what he would like to be called rather than people on a message board coming up with something.

Nah, I was being a smarta$$! Was hoping you actually knew him, lol

usually we just put c in front of the initials around here, but with dakich being dd, I didn’t know if we were rolling with that?
