Chris Beard - Coaching Candidate

Lol and just won't mention going 30-4 with Litte Rock?

I have no issue if the search firm finds that Beard isn't an option because of the his, alleged, current drinking or the situation the night he was arrested.

The questioning his coaching make me laugh.

Hes has a REAL chance to set the all time Ws in a season at his 3rd school.... cmon.

It really is ridiculous. Hate Beard all you want but you can't deny his coaching. The words Elite Eight and NCAA Runner Up are on his resume at Texas freaking Tech. Other than Brad and Drew, what other realistic candidate has that on their resume? Taking a chance on another "the next best thing" will most likely result in another search four years from now. I'd rather take a chance on Beard.

He wins and by all accounts wants to be here with everything he has but I do get why a lot of people don't want him. I just don't care anymore. I want a winner.

76-66 in conference. That's 53% winning in conference.

For context, Woody is 51.3% in conference, though admittedly at a place where it should be easier to win.

Anyone saying Beard isn't a great coach should just sit out.

Wrong.  I’ll support him if the university does.  They will have done their due diligence, and will know much more about the allegations than I ever would.

Just like they did with Sampson? That's a lot of trust in an operation that hasn't necessarily earned it. (Same could be said about Wilson. He was the same person, doing the same things at Oklahoma that IU fired him for.)

For sure they can screw it up.  I’m far more likely to make a bad decision based upon the information I have.

That's totally fair. I'm just talking final records. I have no doubt Beard's teams are consistently more competitive. But I don't think people would sign up for those end results.

People keep saying "Beard wins." But he actually doesn't.

But look at the colleges he has done this at. Pull up Bob Knight records at TT and compare . Who did better I believe Bob was a pretty decent coach.

His Texas team his second year was really good. Was 7-1 with two non conference wins over elite eight teams (Creighton and Gonzaga) at the time he was fired. Texas ended up finishing the year 29-9 and made the elite eight. Obviously Beard didn’t lead them there, but Rodney Terry’s results since then suggest it was the players and not his stellar coaching that got them there… Beard assembled that team.

And criticizing him for Ole Miss is silly. Hes T-5th and 10-7 in the best conference in the country in his second season at a school that doesn’t give a crap about basketball.

If you can get Beard for maybe 4 million then try to run it by the president. But both know their jobs would be on the line. I've already heard of professors on campus who said they would have people follow him around town taking pictures of him getting drunk like he still does in Oxford. He would make it through the football season. It's a no go

If he wants the job so bad, why start him out at that much? IU should be able to get him on the cheap. $2M. Make him prove himself both on and off the court before giving him a raise.

I agree, it's not going to happen.

That's a complete apples to oranges comparison. By the time RMK went to TT he was in his twilight years after stopping engaging actively in recruiting in the 90's at IU (went hunting instead) and being fired from IU because he couldn't control himself. Yeah, "Bob" was a pretty decent coach, with multiple NC's. Beard isn't even in that convo.

LOL. We told on ourselves with Sampson while other High Major Programs were doing far worse…and look what has come of it since. Consistent suckage and Sampson is a HOF coach now who is very reputable within the coaching arena.

Sampson was pushed by the iu president at the time not the AD. In fact I think the AD wanted to hire beilein not sampson.

We see lots of “imagine what they’d do with IU’s resources” about various random coaches, but Beard’s P5 results at schools without IU’s resources get cast aside. He’s 11-5 in the NCAA tournament. Never lost in the first round. The one time he was at a school arguably comparable to IU in UT, he had a great team assembled by year two. I see no reason why he can’t do extremely well on the court at IU with the millions of dollars we have in NIL. Just look at what he’s doing at a non-basketball school in year 2 in a better conference now at Ole Miss.

Yup, he and Adam Herbert were supposedly boys.
Sampson would have worked out just fine if we hired him in 2022 and not 2006. There are no rules anymore and nobody is ever academically ineligible anymore anywhere. He would of had no issues in the current free for all called the ncaa.
