WayneFleekHoosier Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 Similar takes from scrimmage except Rice showed out. He’s the winner on the team. Smart. Does the big and little things. Thought the hustle was solid down the stretch. We are going to go as Rice/Reneau/Ballo go. Goode needs to be better. Carlyle hasn’t looked good to me yet. Want to see Lots of Tucker and Gallo. Chaz Lanier shot UT out of this game. Want more transition to help Ballo. Tennessee is notoriously a great defensive team. Hopefully our playmaking and shooting improves but beating a well coached and talented team on the road is a nice start. The fact that he played six minutes in the exhibition game is probably indicative that he isn't going to be looked on for big minutes. He is a decent shooter for his size and I would expect that you'll see more ten to twelve footers for him. At worst, he's an experienced big in case of foul problems or injury. thebigweave 1 Quote

No way Gallo doesn’t start or at least get starter minutes over Carlyle. Tucker is going to be one of our top 5 players and make it hard to keep off the court in important moments. glad to see Rice ball out and so far be exactly what we need thebigweave 1 Quote

Shooter Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 Myles Rice is exactly what this program has been missing. 20 pts today, 4 assists, 0 TO in 31 minutes. And a couple of huge plays to close the game out down the stretch. I thought Woodson's rotations were pretty good, particularly in the first half. Long stretches with Mgbako and Goode as the two forwards. If everyone is healthy, assume Galloway takes Cupps minutes and Tucker takes Leal's and some of Goode's. Outside shooting was terrible again. Has to be better. Both teams shot poorly, but they generated more clean looks than we did. Reneau is a stud scorer. And he did it in a number of different ways, not just iso post-ups. Ballo didn't do much other than rebound. He'll have better games. Joe_hoopsier, thebigweave and southsidehoosier 3 Quote

I imagine Rice will be top 3 point guard so that’s pretty good in a 20 team bigten thebigweave 1 Quote

HoosierFan1994 Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 About to turn off my Cowboys to rewatch this game. 1) Felt it was a bold statement but seems like everyone is in agreement...Myles Rice I think is the best IU guard since Yogi. I know Ballo probably cost more NIL wise but Rice was the bigger get. Hope he continues to look good. 2) Was nice to see Malik step up. I was thinking there would be a 2012 Verdell or 2022 Race like drop off for him this year. 3) Pretty impressive considering Trey and Tucker were out. Carlyle I thought looked okay on defense? I may be wrong, Trey could be the starting two guard. 4) Three point shooting was meh. That was to be expected. Not to rain on the parade, I don't think Tennessee is #12 good. They deserve to be ranked. But Knecht was a huge loss. The announcer that sounded like Cleveland from Family Guy said it best, they need to find their go to guy. Not sure they have one. Glad they did this game. Outside the Battle 4 Atlantis the non-conference is awful which is upsetting. Kentuckysucks, thebigweave and Home Jersey 3 Quote
cthomas Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 I watched a replay on YouTube and thought I was watching probably the bottom two teams in their respective leagues. Just kidding, but it was mostly ugly. I don't really know anymore about this team than I did before. Other than Rice looks like an upgrade and Ballo is going to be a load for opposing teams. I think as far as the league goes, I think Purdue we look good early because of their continuity, and everyone else will catch up as the season goes on. If things go sideways early, I may have to abandon this board for a while. MemphisHoosier 1 Quote
Golfman25 Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Granted first exhibition game, but to me still looks like some structural issues remain — gave a lot of open looks to TN from 3 (which they missed) and IU missed a lot of threes as well. Hopefully they’ll change that and/or the new talent will make it less concerning. Everything else looked good for the first one. Quote
SamIam Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 Takeaways: Man I wanted Rice so bad and I'm feeling vindicated. So fast, great on D, and smooth from the midrange. He's an older, more measured, better on D version of JHS. And he's almost 22 with 3 years left. Unreal get. I think KC had an off night, but looked pesky on D and I think the shot will fall. He's a little more of a streaky scorer but there will be nights when he can't miss. In the HH scrimmage and now I noticed Reneau looking more fluid and athletic. Mgbako looked comfortable and got in passing lanes a ton, really using his length more. I think this is what Ballo will look like pretty much all season and I think that's a good thing. He's not a great scorer, he's a crushing screen setter and one of the best rebounders in CBB. Doing what he did tonight, even while not filling it up scoring does so much for the team. Cupps looks way more comfortable and we didn't even have Gallo or Tucker. To me, thats huge. We need to play 10 deep in the non-con, preserve our top guys and trust the second unit to help run up the score. If we learned anything from last year it's that we need to dump on inferior teams to help our metrics early in the season, and the depth I saw tonight gives me hope. Cupps Leal Tucker Goode and one of the bigs is should be good enough to run it up on a weak team. HoosierHoopster and thebigweave 2 Quote
dwtaylor1055 Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 First half was ehh for both teams(some jitters) - felt like the 2nd half both teams finally started playing in sync and with real purpose: Rice is that dude. He will be playing at the next level (selfishly I hope he is in an IU uniform for more than one year). He can drive, push the ball, find the open man and finish at the rim. A three-level scorer and passer. Ballo will be a nightly double double machine and a force down low(I noticed a few times if Rices guy got into the lane with the ball, Rice left his guy to slide away and put a body on Ballos guy(Ballo slide into the lane to take on Rices guy to contest the ball/shot). Great IQ and awareness on Rices part. Keep shooting Goode.....Keep shooting Goode. he won't go 0-5 very ofter Kanaan was meh for me on offense, on defense he was pesky. He is our wild card for the season IMO. Malik looks better and looks improved. MM looks better and looks improved. it was only an exhibition game BUT we came away with no injuries, we got to see a glimpse of the team together(minus Gallo and Tucker) on the road in what felt like a true in season road game and beat a ranked opponent that will be playing likely past day one and day two of March Madness. I'd say yesterday was a success. Dave from Dayton, MemphisHoosier, thebigweave and 2 others 5 Quote

I would agree if this was about the first half and the early part of the 2nd half. But, then things rapidly changed. IU was playing against what may prove, again, to be an elite defensive team. One of the best teams, possibly, in the SEC. Big difference in what I saw was a possibly elite PG in Miles Rice. Quick, decisive, gets to the rim, distributes quickly, handles pressure well. Also, once Reneau got warm and he and Ballo played high/low, things started to click. Finally Mack shook off the rust and contributed. Defense got better and IU got the ball across the half court rapidly. Half of the 8 three point shots in the 2nd half were good. And Coach Woody did not platoon and pull the starters all at once. Not only did this look different, after lots of questions in the first half, but it looked light-years better to me. Holy Basketball, Batman! A point guard that is smart and quick and makes things happen and defends. Been yearning for this since...well...a bunch of seasons too numerous to count. And adjustments during the game that worked...and defensive focus. Pinch me. thebigweave 1 Quote
