Yup, but the pay was good. Florida wasn’t going to touch him for that amount?

The gets are “overpays”. Just gotta have a great scout and moneyball it. I think Freshman add nice roster stability for cheaper but we didn’t have the luxury.

Would Walter Clayton had been an overpay if it took $2 million to get him?

Genuine question, your logic seems to be if he’s a mid major it’s an overpay and yet Clayton just led his team to a championship so I’m trying to figure out if you’re actually consistent with the logic.

Tell your friend that yes, people discuss roster construction & question/express concerns with NIL allocation & if they can’t handle it to just ignore the thread or start a new one where everyone just high-fives each other all day about our imminent, inevitable, unquestionable success next year.

Any ideas what to title his new thread to get  focussed discussion of portal players with IU interest? Would something like "Overpaying mid major talent and the horrors of not being ranked in the preseason top 25," work? Or would that likely attract discussion of slow coaching staff construction and favorite Bloomington eateries?

We've beaten out Kentucky, Gonzaga, Ole Miss, Auburn, and Maryland for portal transfers this year. That's just off the top of my head.

All of these programs have been better than ours the past 5-10 years.

Snagged a reserve player from the national champions.

If Tucker Devries wasn't related to our head coach, he would have been able to pick any school in the country to go to.

Yeah we've got cash, but we are not some outlier program that has gobs of money to outbid every program for any target we want especially when we have 12 spots to fill.

Every school has money.

Ehh those don’t mean much, it’s because the number of people were bringing in, it’s part of the equation

On3 also accounts for players that are leaving and IU, so more of a "net" effect.

Andy Katz says 5th in the big ten. Our team is full portal.

Rankings are taken in mind of how many players you brought in.  Just because you brought in a lot of players doesn't make your ranking higher.  Purdue brought in one player and is rated highly.

I mean Baba Miller has 30+ starts in a P5 conference, something Bailey nor Alexis can claim. Miller’s numbers at FAU were pretty comparable to Alexis’ numbers at Chattanooga. Paying $1.5 mil for Bailey to be a starting 5 in the B10 who was a massive defensive liability in the A10 just seems like a gross overpay in my opinion.

Are you really hanging your hat on Baba Miller putting up 7.6 points and 4.9 rebounds on a Florida State team over someone who put up 18 points/6 rebounds at a mid majors?  Hell, why even recruit ANYONE from a mid/low major then.  To hell with Dalton Knecht, just get Anthony Walker's.

Miller, Federiko, any of the numerous defensive-minded 5's in the portal we could have gotten in the same price-range that addressed the one glaring weakness on the roster. Take your pick.

That's just your opinion of a glaring weakness.

Yes, a merit-based opinion based on Bailey's three year body of work that suggests he's anything but a good defender.

Same price range as who? Miller and Fed are asking for as much money as Bailey got and Bailey is ranked about 100 spots higher than either of those guys. There's a reason Bailey was signed almost immediately and coveted by many other schools while Miller and Fed are still waiting. Maybe Bailey struggles to guard traditional lumbering Big 10 5's (looking around I'm not seeing much to be concerned about) but they have to guard him too.

We spent (allegedly) $2.5 million between Bailey and Alexis. For that kind of money I believe we could have spent more on quality P5 big at the expense of one of those two and perhaps one of the 8 guard/wings we brought in.

Not expecting the staff to be perfect in year 1 and that's fine. But with the way the roster is constructed, I just don't feel Bailey's skillset and subsequent weaknesses was an area of need. Again an opinion of course.

Who could we have spent that on to get two players? The big boy P5s wanted Bailey just like we did.

Don't sign Bailey for $1.5 million (allegedly) or Jason Drake for $600k (allegedly) and you now all of the sudden have $2.1 million to spend on a 5 that better fills the team perceived weaknesses, if in fact IU is at the top of their budget. Not sure what's hard to understand about that? And you probably could have signed whoever you wanted.

Were the other P5 teams sniffing around Reed as poor overall defensively on paper as next years IU team? Were they offering $1.5 million (allegedly) plus?

I like Reed Bailey's game, I just don't believe it pairs well with the remaining personnel. Nothing more, nothing less.

Knecht is a pretty interesting one because iirc most said they thought he could score but not defend in the SEC. But Barnes got him to play pretty solid defense.

I would take Bailey over Fredricko or Miller. I don't understand your fixation with mediocre P5 players

I will take a more productive mid major over a less productive P5 players any day if the week.

Is there comfort in the idea of having a 7 footer mainly focused on rebounding, shot blocking and running the court? Of course… is it an absolute necessity to be a competitive CBB team? Not in my opinion.

Only time will tell RE: roster construction / style of play. Fair to have questions and be skeptical at this point but no sense in letting anxiety turn you from skeptic to critic. The fact DDV seems to have had a pretty high conversion rate on his targets should give some peace of mind that he’s executing his plan… we just have to wait to see it on the court. The wait is what you make it. Fun or painstaking.
