This assumes the players are employees. I suppose people should get paid for 'donating' blood too, but not everything has to be a financial transaction. However, that is an entirely different discussion for another thread.

I think what Scotty is saying (and I agree with) is that we like traditional, amatuer college sports. Was it ever pristine? No, I know Kentucky and Alabama and plenty of other schools have been cheating for generations. But Pro sports already exist, I don't want a junior pro league that is just pretending to be associated with my favorite school.

So, I am fine with kids getting what they can, while they can and I want IU to win basketball games....but It's ok to lament that the sport we all loved, is for all intents and purposes, completely dead. The current zombie of NIL/Mega conference/Unlimited transfer 'college' sports shambles on, but it's not the real thing.

It’s a regular…Buy’em and Paymora.  Old Testament stuff.

They are paying to broadcast Duke, UK, Indiana and not Individual players. Players have come and gone but the the thing that stays the same is the name on the front of the jersey

If Duke, UK, and Indiana don't bother investing in the program and are bottom dwellers for 10+ years, the fans will go away and that jersey will lose its worth.

I know the comeback will be that Indiana hasn't done anything the last 20 years, but the truth is we've still had better results than roughly half the teams in the Big Ten.  We've had recurring moments of hope provided by preseason expectations, or a blue chip recruit, or a new coach.  It's been ugly and the administration's competence is rightly questioned, but you can't say they aren't trying.  If we don't invest in NIL that would be proof positive we aren't trying, and the fans will eventually disappear.

As much as I want to agree, setting caps, limits and rules will only force the excess back under the tables and into the shadows. And, yes, it will only get worse as we move forwards, regardless of what tact "we" take.

That’s a good point, but I do believe that there is going to have to be some type of salary cap although cheaters will always cheat, but they always risk the chance of getting caught and facing penalties just like always.
I’m sure professional teams can cheat the salary cap also,  that’s just what you have to deal with in an imperfect system, but there has got to be a way of evening Things out for the sake of college basketball IMO.

The one constant in life is change.

Lamenting something isn’t going to bring it back.
The fact is, in a generation or so, kids being recruited will have no concept of not being paid.
It was a shock to folks when the forward pass was introduced to football. Or when the designated hitter and interleague play was made part of baseball. The “traditionalists “ went bonkers. Change happened and now is accepted as part of the games, damn the traditionalists.

it’s okay. Life will go on. And we’ll continue to root for the program we love.

Understood... but the NCAA is a joke. Their "enforcement" is ridiculous, and teams like UNC, KY, Duke, Kansas and others have cheated throughout the history of the NCAA, and by and large, gotten away with it. Sure, there's a slap on the wrist every now and then, but there was absolutely no "risk of getting caught", and even less "facing penalties", just like aways...

The system is broken beyond repair, and I don't see a fix anywhere on the horizon. Congress can't even get their settlement deal approved... time to "just lay back and enjoy" it...

The Olympics have been ruined. Nobody cares anymore. That’s where college sports are headed

Baloney.  The 2024 Olympics were viewed by approximately 5 billion people at least once -- 84% of those who could had the potential to watch -- with the total viewing hours over 27 billion.

Of the 10 million tickets that were made available to Olympic events, 9.5 million were sold.

Whole lot of 'nobodies' watched it.

You can lay back and enjoy whatever it is you think is happening to you, the rest of us won't be off the deep end taking it so personally while enjoying college basketball.

Nobody minds change if it is a good change and if it helps the sport itself. This change is killing the sport so that is why people are unhappy with the change.

Sad but true. Unlimited money and unchecked power will ruin everything. Some things never change.  Read Sartre.

I doubt the folks that want top CBB and CFB players to take 90%+ pay cuts would react well to taking such a pay cut themselves.

These players are worth a lot and should be paid what they’re worth… simple as that.

But they are not being paid "what they are worth" as their NIL isn't tied to the TV deals, tickets, etc.  It's based on whose alumni have a bigger checkbook.  So there are have's and have not's.  Revenue share should start to level things out, at least within a conference.
