Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Not Chris but the only possible way I could see May staying at FAU another year is if he has reassurance that his core is coming back to use their Covid years. I know what Dusty has done the last few years building FAU is remarkable, but he's pretty much done it with the same 5-6 guys the last 4 years. He's not a miracle worker. If Dusty loses 7-8 guys at FAU and stays put, his stock has the potential to drop significantly.

I can’t imagine anyone doing IU any favors. The admin are clowns and until they fix what they broke no one will treat them with any charity.

If there's one thing about Mike Woodson, it's that Mike Woodson is getting his 4 years.

... Except with the Knicks. The Knicks only gave Mike Woodson 3.

Quinn Buckner only got one year as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

Because Mark Cuban is an intelligent IU grad.

Yeah, Archie was on the rise and not declining at the end of year 3. Plus he didn't have the NIL to work with let alone one as big as Woodson does

A couple of weeks ago the Assembly Call guys were debating the "Woodson problem".  One of them cited the historical outcome for coaches who have bad records in their third season - it's not good.

I'll try that one:

1) Dusty May will be a P5 head coach somewhere by mid-April.

2) And this, which I have said from the start and still adhere to: There is still at least as good a chance that Dusty May will be IU's head coach by mid-April as there is that Mike Woodson will still be head coach.

RTZ on the other site still thinks Woody retiring is a possibility. But who knows.

if I’m Dolson and my hand was forced for a 4th year with Woodson then I try to have him announce he is retiring after next season. Have one last go with him. Then I go ahead and hire Dusty as the GM for 1 year and announce he will be the HC the following year. This allows him to start recruiting for his first year as HC and help secure a couple multi year portal guys this year to help with the transition.

I'll take a stab at why someone would. We still would have top 10 NIL money for the new coach to go use in the portal. He can keep a few of our players already. Might bring some with him. Plus the 25 class from the state is really good. Probably a good time also to get IU to overpay with the situation were in.

All of that plus...the bar is so low that we'd for at least a couple of seasons, we'd be thrilled with even the slightest signs of life and competency. Finish in the top half of the Big Ten, actually attempt to recruit, sign two (gasp!) high school recruits and play something resembling modern basketball and IU fans would be very happy. Do more than that and you might get a statue and a fat extension. Things are dark right now, no question. But there are still very good reasons for good candidates to want this job and it could turn around very quickly.

They are bad AND have a recruiting pipeline.

Michigan football fans are the worst out here in Arizona...

Does this train wreck . Give MR and MM leverage . Couldn't they ask for an outlandish nil deal .

Oh boy, we were going to have to overpay to fill the roster beforehand. After? This will be the most expensive roster since NIL started. Not that I think there is much hope but same could be said for a new coach. Someone like May could certainly ask for more as he would be risking his future earning potential by coming to a studs level rebuild. Same with Pearl and his legacy. We are cooked. This has just started a minimum 3 year rebuild and that’s with whoever the coach is.

1) I agree with RTZ.

2) If I'm Dusty May there is no way in holy hell that I'm signing up for that.

  • $4 million/per year times five years as head coach of Ohio State or West Virginia, or
  • Reporting to Mike Woodson on an IU sinking ship for $1.25 million for one year?

I'll grant you #1.

Your point #2 is pretty damn gutsy given the $$ have spoken their mind and in effect are blackmailing the university to keep him.  Egos are way too big to do an about face and now say OK, go ahead and get a new coach.

Yes IU is going to have to overpay for any NIL deals. Rabby said agents are asking for an extra 50K for their clients going to schools on shakey ground. It might be more money for the earthquake were on

Given the dire circumstances, we'll likely only have a chance with guys motivated mostly by the money - not the desire for team success, not to advance their skills.  Maybe there's players who are looking for playing time but they probably won't be difference makers.  The best chance for a major name would be a big who's looking to be the feature player so he can bolt to the NBA at the end of the season.

This is the recipe for failure.

The McNeeley decommit completely changes the dynamic for next season. I would expect Woodson coming back to be revisited.
I doubt it. It appears this Scott family is all in on him and thinks he is the greatest thing since sliced bread
