Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Sign me up. I always wanted to be a PI or a detective. But I've never shot a gun so that probably won't work so I'll have to just use my hands, which I've never been in a fight so I might be stuck here at IU.

It is only the American ones who do. Watch any British show (like Midsomer Murders, Bergerac, New Tricks and others) of the genre and they don't carry weapons.

Eric, the guy from HH, announces himself as himself on there?

100%. He even has the "Staff" tag next to his username. Kinda like a moderator would

He is very hard to deal with on Peegs.

Correct. When he messages, he signs each one "- Eric"

He also does this with posts on Peegs boards

They chose that path

I know. But that path coupled with terrible performances in the 2 major sports will mean they won’t have fans at either sporting event in the future. It may take another generation, but it’ll happen if this poor management of the programs continues

I agree that it was wrong for Glass to not give Woody proper respect. But what made the basketball alums think Woody was qualified? The same questions we had this time would've existed then -- just four years earlier ...

He never had coached in college.
He was 50 games under .500 in the NBA.
Were he not an IU grad, no college would've had interest in his services.
I could go on, but (thankfully for all) won't ...

Now, I'm starting to wonder: If Woody wanted the job so bad when Archie were hired, was Glass pushed to fire Crean by QB et al for that reason: to bring Woody aboard?

Possibly the alums assumed he could coach IU because he coached in the NBA. There are some people that are NBA snobs.  The NBA has the best players in the world and a lot of smart basketball coaches.  They assume since the NBA play is better, then NBA coaches could easily coach college ball.  Some things do translate which can be seen in well-designed out-of-bounds plays.  However, the games are different in a lot of ways with recruiting, player development, and roster utilization chief among them.  It's no coincidence that Juwann Howard was better with Beilein's players or Woodson with Archie's.

Woody, with support from a large number of basketball alums,  wanted the job when we hired Miller. Glass blew him off, which angered those guys, including QB. That was a big error, even if he wasn’t the right guy. Some things linger for years.

I’m certainly not privy to any communication between Glass and Woodson, but does deciding someone is not even qualified enough to get an interview necessarily constitute blowing someone off?  Does your company interview every single person that applies for a job?

It’s tough trying to raise your kids as IU fans. My 7 year old told me “dad I don’t want to be a Hoosier fan. I want to cheer for Purdue” I of course said no, we’re Hoosiers, but deep down I thought - I don’t blame him. If Mike Woodson is back we may all convert to another team. It’s pathetic

In 1980 my parents took me to the IU-Purdue game. I rooted for Purdue because I liked their uniforms better. My parents teased me about this for years. Mike Woodson was on that team, it should have been a sign.

While it’s possible he will be back, It feels more likely that Woody won’t be the coach after this season.

And if I were a betting man, I’d say it’s more likely that Dusty May will be the coach than Woody by the end of April.

I would be shocked if Woodson stepped down after this year.

If this year finishes badly?

I’d be quite surprised if he didn’t.

It's what I fully expect to happen

Agree @ap2345.

Since mid-January it's been my most likely expectation, with the caveat that the season finishes badly. So if we get to 20 wins, which is unlikely but possible? All bets are off. But if the season finishes badly or semi-badly? I continue to think the most likely outcome is retirement with a financial settlement and an extended payment financing by IU.

No dog in this fight, but in this article he's quoted saying those exact words, kind of...says "was" vs. "is" -

https://www.si.com/college/indiana/basketball/my-two-cents-for-auburn-coach-bruce-pearl-indiana-was-my-dream-job

"Indiana was my dream job, it really was,'' Pearl told me. "I love everything about Indiana basketball, really loved and admired Coach Knight as a young coach myself, and it's one of the great programs in America.

"The timing was never right, I suppose. I guess, what, I was at Tennessee and really enjoying that and I love Auburn now. So nothing ever really aligned, but it would have been a dream come true to coach Indiana. That's how much I love and respect that program.''

Respectfully, come on. No coach in the country is going to say another school is his dream job unless it's someone coaching Coppin State looking to get the job at Kansas.

I 100% agree with this. As someone who has met and been around Woody many times, he is a great guy. But unfortunately at his age, he's just not willing or able to put in the work to be our head coach 365 days a year.

I appreciate your answer and it's good to have you here. We need a few more women around to make us all smarter :-)

.. says the guy who stuck his wife on a plane ... :D :D

Which is ironic because he has made fun of Brian Snow for the exact same thing.

Would an actual Trustee really sign up for this message board with basically their real identity? Weren't we just wondering the other day about if they actually care/read/hear about what goes on in these forums lol.

I appreciate tensions are running high but let's avoid personal attacks on any new poster, even if they're suspected of being part of our collective frustration

Me really thinks it’s her.

Speaks to the overall solid discourse BTB fosters that this even happened.

Well see.. I completely disagree. We should have figured out, why he didn't work out... in our hiring process. That is how good organizations are run.

Besides his run to the elite eight in 2014, what else did Archie achieve at the level he was at that it would indicate he could handle a P5 job? Sure he did really well that next year with a limited number of players, but at the same time he was coaching in the A-10 not the Big Ten. Big difference.

Dayton won by a point in the 1st round over Ohio State. Crazy to think that a bucket could make that much of a difference in the opinion of potential coach.
