Our coaching staff are going to need to do a lot of soul searching to figure out our backcourt for next season imo.

You have Galloway likely back, Gunn, Cupps, and Newton all projected to come back and I don’t feel good about any of them being a starter on a top 10 team.

Top 10 in the nation or top 10 in the B1G? That doesn't look like a top 10 in the B1G backcourt, much less top 10 in the nation.

Dragging your feet on this kid just doesn't make any sense. No clue why we have not gone all in on him yet, this is the type of guard we are always begging for.

How do you know they haven't

Well, he has yet to receive a formal offer so that doesn't sound like we've gone all in.  Right now we have a number of offers out to high profile guards and while we can't get caught slow playing any one kid, the overall recruiting strategy is somewhat like a game of chess in how we handle each target.

I asked someone but can't remember which board and someone posted that we had offered

99.99% confident we haven't.  Lot of expectations were an offer would be made after Woody watched him play last weekend but it didn't happen.

Halftime quote from Davis during a OTE game I’m watching that they’re winning pretty comfortably: “We didn’t play with a lot of energy. We’ve got to fix the energy and play defense. Everybody wanting’ the ball and that ain’t gonna help us win.”

Calling out his team at halftime of a game they’re winning by 13. Love it.

This kid is an interesting example to look at as fans. Just interesting on the philosophy behind recruiting.
I would say most of us would be pretty happy with him. Woody watched him recently and must still be on the fence. Sounds like he is ours if we wanted him.
So this begs the question, does Woody just have really, really high standards and isn’t willing to budge? Is this is a good thing long term or something he needs to adjust?  Would he rather have a portal guy since we have Cupps etc?
easy to say take him , but do we then complain he is not good enough IE Gunn, Leal, Geronimo, etc.

I’d argue we weren’t “complaining” Gunn, Leal, Geronimo aren’t good enough I’d say we were justifiably pointing out that they weren’t good enough.

I’m still on the fence with Gunn because he has the intangibles but then on the court it doesn’t seem to work. Geronimo was similar. Gunn came in yesterday, missed a front end then took an I’ll advised jumper and missed it. Got yanked. He plays with ultimate confidence but the shooting has never matched.

There are examples of 3 stars and less that become incredible players all across the country every year, it just seems rare to find them on Indianas roster.

I kinda like this kid, but I think we need an alpha ready to roll at either PG or SG next year and Davis would be a developmental piece at IU. So, it makes things tough.

Similar to the Boogie Fland recruitment.  Staff was very high on Boogie but he didn't play particularly well in front of Woody and was put on the backburner.  Clearly that subsequently changed and we battled to the wire for Boogie but lost.

Woody watched Davis on Dec. 8, and he didn't have a bad game --  20p; 8r; 2a; 4s; 0b; 1t        6-18 FG; 4-9 on 3s; 4-6 FT

From what I read elsewhere seemed expectations were that Davis would be offered once Woody saw him play in person.  That offer did not take place and I've not seen anything that offers any explanation other than Woody's playing a chess game with his guard recruitment.  Sometimes a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush but what do I know?

Looking at this year's roster, I'd be hard pressed to call Woody a winner at a "guard chess game". One open scholly, two solid guards on the injured list, a rookie that's coming along nicely in many regards, a senior that has been missing in action so far this year (finally showed up in the Kansas game), a senior who's much better as a "team guy"/cheerleader than as a player, and a handful of walk-ons who have yet to see action...

I don't see much in the way of interest/commitments for 2024 at this point, either.

I find his overall recruiting frustrating. He lands a big fish or two, but misses on the entirety of a supporting cast. Not sure why it's gone that way, but it's maddening.

I agree!  Get this guy and DQ and with Liam, it would make for a nice recruiting class!  You don’t have to load your team up on all 5 star recruits, you can win with 4 and 3 star recruits too.  Look at Turdue, I don’t believe they have any 5 star recruits.

Head coach has to want him first and to this point in time that hasn’t happened yet

Feels like Woody is being stubborn to the detriment of the teams long term success. Between what some close to the program have mentioned (sourced or rumors), what he’s said publicly about who we should be targeting, etc., it really seems like he has an unrealistic expectation of who we should be targeting. I love that he has IU “sitting at the table” with all these 5 star kids but we aren’t Kansas, Duke, and Kentucky.

What about this kid says that he can’t be as good or better than X? We need guys like that in the program. Guys who can develop into dudes. This kid may be one already by the time he hits campus.

I wonder if the rest of the staff gets ticked off with situations like this under Woody. I imagine they’ve scouted him and identified him as being worthy of a scholly, yet the ol man keeps vetoing it.

not claiming to know… just trying to piece things together. There is also some real urgency to to fill the gaping holes at the G position, so obviously people like me are going to worry and be critical. Especially when players like Davis, who seems to be ready to commit, and the staff likes, but our head guy isn’t trusting the staffs scout. Frustrating bc he’s an immediate upgrade at the PG position to what we have now,  we need some more depth at guard beyond him, and we banked a ******* scholly for no apparent reason this year when we have a huge need.

Whatever. I own a construction business. What the hell would I know anyways.

oh yeah…. Merry Christmas everyone!

I tend to agree with most of this. However, I don't know what the conservation is with this kid among the staff. I also don't know what other kids they're having conversations with. I can't imagine a coach not taking a player who could improve the team. I guess I'm saying that the unknowns as a fan make it hard for me to question too much what CMW is doing.

For sure. Thats why I wanted to stress that I don’t know those details but I’m trying to piece it together based off of crumbs given to us.

I hope we end up with him. He passes the eye test for me. Also, he’s played and had success in one of the more fertile (if not the most fertile) regions in the nation, in regard to basketball talent and competition.

So owning a construction company, I'm sure every personnel/business decision you've made, has been 100% accurate?

I'm sure if you did some anonymous internal polling of employees, you'd be surprised at how many of them don't agree with every decision you've made! Yet the "ole" man made the decision anyway.

Woody has made the tournament both years, put 2 guys in the league, has won 65% of his games, is 3-1 vs PU, and recruited well. How was your company doing after 2 1/3 years?
