HoosierAloha Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 Glad we're staying on topic here Josh, I hope your newest employee knows as much about leadership as you do. I'm pretty excited to see what Cupps brings from a leadership perspective but hope we have the personnel that allow him to lead even as a freshman. Josh Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 Nuggets from today (don't tell Old Fart) Gabe's patented move was to take a pass at the top of the key, then curl around a screen and drain the shot. He's also very proud of his defense. Coach Cupps would get angry after games where he felt the team didn't play the defense he liked so he would spend an entire week's practices on defense with no mention of offense. This built a defensive mindset that Gabe bought into. He apparently prefers defense to offense. Also, when Gabe as a middle schooler would practice against the varsity squad Coach Cupps would tell the team not to take it easy on the kid, play as hard on him as you would a high schooler. This built toughness. Tomorrow I'm one on one with my new hire all day too, let me know what questions you have. I know none of these are earth shattering but I'm hungry in the off season lol rcbowla, J34, thebigweave and 4 others 7 Quote

RaceToTheTop Posted June 8, 2023 Posted June 8, 2023 Just for comparison, Victor Oladipo did 15 reps of 185 pounds......at the NBA draft combine. Cupps likely will take a little time to adjust to the college game but doubt he is going to get muscled around despite his light weight. thebigweave, go iu bb, ALASKA HOOSIER and 1 other 4 Quote

I think a lot of people are sleeping on this kid because of his rating. That can't measure how competitive he is or how smart he is with the basketball. I'm calling him the surprise of this class. Or possibly Newton. Either way, I think we are going to be really happy with what we have. ALASKA HOOSIER, BtownStrength, thebigweave and 1 other 4 Quote

This 1st reply on the original Cupps’ tweet: Don’t let them over do it. Every freshmen can shoot before they come to Indiana and then one summer of workouts and they can’t hit the ocean. Honkyman Posted June 8, 2023 Posted June 8, 2023 Maybe he can lift weights but he is still small compared to most college players. In the photo of the new IU players, Cupps looks more like the team manager than a guard playing in the Big Ten. Alford Bailey 1 Quote

It's also hilarious when people compare "shooting" from HS to D1. It's not apples to apples. Demo 1 Quote

But uhhh.. so did Michael Lewis, Jordy Hulls, plenty others that maybe were only a few inches taller (Verdell Jones)... and Cupps is a better athlete than those 3 I mentioned. Team manager will be a way we describe Gabe Cupps later in his career, it just won't be in the negative sense you're thinking. hoosierbgh, Class of '66 Old Fart, thebigweave and 2 others 5 Quote

Josh Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 My source tells me we should wait until Cupps actually plays for us before we decide that he'll be fine or that he'll suck. This sounds crazy to me so I asked for confirmation. I'll let you know when I hear back. ALASKA HOOSIER and HoosierAloha 2 Quote
