I mean they were college roommates and I could definitely see the old boosters saying Stevie is the only one who can fix this. I'm to the point I will go with anyone

Don't know how much pull Buckner has with the trustees, but according to Dakich -- he would never allow Alford to be hired at IU.

What's the worst that could happen if we hired Alford? Miss the NCAA Tourney? Lol. What's new?

Was Dolson, the AD, not allowed to hire the coach?

I don’t know that’s why I said rumors. It could have been all Dolson.

We've had multiple chances to hire Alford and went with other guys. If our administration coveted him that much, he'd already be here.

Yep, they have passed on him several times. Unlike a lot of people on this forum, I don't hate Alford, and the guy can recruit, I wouldn't be surprised if he had some level of success here, but he would divide the fan base and we have been through too much of that lately. As much as I like Woody, I'm not sure he is the answer either.....

If Woody does not succeed and the top coaches aren’t interested then the an Alford candidate is not as far fetched. Fan base may have left anyway so not much to divide.

Money still and will always talk. If we are willing to spend, truly, we will get a top notch coach. Simple as that. Not too many 3-4 million a year coaches that will turn down 8 million a year. A few will but, identifying that right guy is the problem. Needs to be a proven winner, who is very confident in himself.

I have been pretty down the past month as many, so here is my attempt at some positivity and hope...

This roster has glaring weaknesses. IMO, even with a top notch coach, I am not sure that this roster is anything more than an 8/9 seed in the NCAA tournament. No dynamic scorers, not really any length and quickness on the wings, and undersized bigs who lack perimeter skills. I know that going into each game in the big ten I never felt that IU had more talent than the other teams outside the teams IU finished ahead of in the standings. Do they have enough talent to get into the tournament? yes, but not as much to really do anything. And this roster is not on Woody, yes he brought in transfers but the bulk is left over from the past staff.

SO....

It all comes down to recruiting. I think we have seen a strong shift in the type of players IU has commitments from and continues to go after. Unlike Archie, Woody has shown the ability to recruit nationally and not just Indiana. He is recruiting dynamic scorers and guys with length. Plus he seems to have guys that have real basketball IQ. If he can develop those guys and keep the young guys IU has, we will be fine. Do I think Woody takes us to national titles and mulitple final 4s? no. But I do think the way he is recruiting he can have us constantly in the tournament with chances to make some runs and that is a far cry from where this program has been. Not making the tournament this year is definitely not ideal, but it isn't the end. The next 2 classes are important to get on campus and develop.

Go Hoosiers.

I was a little (LOT) whiney about missing the tournament in the Rutgers thread. In the long run, I'm more optimistic that not. I guess that's because I have no other choice, as I can't affect anything typing words into white boxes on the internet.

I like the class coming in and I'm with you on this. I reserve ultimate judgement for a while and just hope that this first year back in college is a learning experience to grow from.

If Woodson doesn't work we will be back to hiring an up and coming mid major coach.

I understand the concerns based on how the season has gone. I think it is way early to make any determination about whether or not CMW will work out. He has said that he is still learning the college game and I'm sure the limitations of college basketball players compared to the guys he is used to has been a shock. But, he loves IU. He is invested in it on a level that no one in a long time has been. The kids he is recruiting should give us a window into the type of team he wants. Whether he can make that a reality or not remains to be seen. I will give him the benefit of the doubt. This team, while not achieving what we may have wanted, has at least been competitive and has seldom looked disinterested. I'll take that as a step in the right direction.
