Unexpectedflash Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 This is who I want. I know there were reports he wouldn't be interested but this the same guy that said Buffalo was the next Gonzaga and then took the Alabama job the next week. He fits everything Dolson said he wanted in the next coach. Offer him 5 million and make him decline. kottke and cybergates 2 Quote
Hovadipo Posted March 19, 2021 Author Posted March 19, 2021 Hear me out: if terms from the Stevens ordeal have been even close to true, money is no object to the new administration, so I really don’t know how big of an obstacle his buyout is. It gives me hope. Josh, FWHoosier84, cybergates and 1 other 4 Quote
Trish Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 I don't see this happening. He has a good program. He said he's extremely happy at the moment. He has a $12.40 million dollar buy-out. Throw in our $10 million owed to Archie Throw in the next contract for Nate Oats which would start around $6 million I'd imagine. I just don't see Indiana being that serious for anyone other than Brad Stevens. Stuhoo 1 Quote

Hippopotamo Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 He’s a great coach, but I don’t think he’s realistic due to his buyout and the fact that Alabama would match any offer. Quote
kottke Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 I don’t think he’s in play unfortunately, but he’s my top pick along with Beard. I love Beard too but I think Oat’s teams would be more fun to watch. Quote
Shoes_N_Shorts Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 He would owe Alabama $12M if he left this year. Not happening. Quote
JSHoosier Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 I'll say it, if we took him right now best case is Crean's 9 years and that's if he does better than he's shown. Quote
Popular Post Hovadipo Posted March 20, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted March 20, 2021 Nate Oats has been a head coach for 6 seasons. In those 6 seasons he has won: -3 conference coach of the year awards -4 conference tournaments -3 conference regular season titles Plays a fun style, has no filter, is young, is affordable outside of his buyout. I’m in. VO5, HoosierTrav, Stromboli and 7 others 10 Quote

We could offer $4.5M and pay the $12M buyout and in 6 years we’d have spent less than we would have on BS. Not saying we should, but I do like this guy. The BS scenario seems to suggest that an Oats $$ package isn’t as big of a deal than we thought. cybergates, Parakeet Jones and kottke 3 Quote

8bucks Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 I think his buyout increased Ok well his buyout is a legitimate reason but just having signed an extension would not. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app Quote

FWHoosier84 Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 I admittedly haven’t watch Alabama play so I’ll be interested to watch them today and Monday. Regarding the buyout, who cares if it’s a large price tag? Dolson already got a donor to pony up the costs to “near unlimited” amounts. I don’t care if IU pays the next coach $10 mil a year. It’s not like we’ve got a statewide referendum on the new coach’s salary and our property taxes are going up. Also if you consider yourself a top college bb coach, wouldn’t you want to go to a basketball school? I googled “Alabama game” yesterday to see when they played and there wasn’t a single mention of the NCAA tournament, only the spring football game. Parakeet Jones 1 Quote
Hoosierinbham Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 Living in Birmingham with numerous Tide friends, I watch most of Bama's games. Oates is solid and very well liked down here. He's also 1 bad season from complete obscurity to the football fanbase. Their big money guys are ego driven, so the more they win this tournament, the harder it would be to get him. He plays a fun style of offense, and aggressive D. The offense relies heavily on his strong use of analytics, which means overemphasized use of the 3 pointer, or shots at the rim. Mid range shots seem to be very discouraged. He has a math background, so it's all about the numbers. The players and fans love his style, and recruiting has really picked up under Oates. The rumor goes, the only jobs he would leave for are Wisconsin or Michigan State. He is a Midwest boy, so my personal opinion would be he would have to listen to an IU offer. Gard isn't going anywhere, and Izzo seems like he would get to choose his successor. The major drawback would be his brevity of coaching experience at P5 level. If this picks up any steam, I will have some good opportunities for information. raorIU, 323SGrant, Hardwood83 and 3 others 4 2 Quote
