The idea that Boston wrote him something and told him to say it and Brad didn’t like it or believe it but was just like “sure OK I’ll say it” is asinine and delusional.

Happens all the time, LOL.... wow out of touch a little I see.

This post is a good example of why other fan bases/national media give so much sh*t to IU fans.

I’m sure there as never been a coach in the NBA or any other sports team that was told to say something by a PR guy.  This was NOT the case this time as @BGleas put that to bed.  He worked there and I trust what he says.  I think he would also would agree some PR guys have to tell certain coaches what to say.

Absolutely. But it's more bullet points to hit, what to not say, and general guidance of how the organization wants an issue handled.

It wouldn't be a written script at this level, unless you're literally delivering a prepared statement on a legal issue.

They're also not going to insert weird jokes into the messaging, I've never seen that at this level, which is why I think it was just awkwardness from Stevens.

Something like Stevens asking the PR how to handle the IU rumors would be the PR rep giving him some general guidance.

So if Stevens gets a Masshole chant next time he's at Bankers Life, its his own fault?

I guess if we want to assign fault. Who else's would it be?

Look, nobody should hate on Stevens because he doesn't want to coach IU. We drove that entire narrative. He is a really good coach who decided several years ago that he wanted to coach in the NBA.....at legendary franchise. Can't we just let that be a career choice without vilifying him? We created the buzz and it fed on itself. He may have entertained offers, who wouldn't. Everything we were told may have been true at some point in time. A decision was made and now for the love of all that's holy, let's just move on.

Hi all. Born and bred Hoosier. First time poster. Thank you to those for the best efforts at presenting "insider info" and to everyone else for the (mostly) civil discussion!!

Not to pour salt, perpetuate false hope, or overanalyze but I am surprised no one has mentioned some of the other parts from Stevens' quote last night. Specifically, the part about going through "a tough season" and "it's not my job to not go through it" and later "I'm doing everything I can to find a better version of ourselves THIS year" (emphasis added). Notice he says nothing about NEXT year or building for the future.

Couple things ...... firstly, as others have stated, if he's coming, it will be after the Celtics season. Secondly, he is explaining in black and white why he is "not considering" (ie "accepting") the IU job ------ his responsibility to his current employer and players ------ especially to Ainge who re-upped his faith in Stevens prior to this season with the contract extension. 0708 sources may very well be right that he received a raise. I doubt it (though doesn't mean sources are not right about other things). Just saying it would be strange for a hot seat coach (in Celtics fans' eyes) receiving YET ANOTHER raise 6 months removed from a contract extension in a down year. Big boys don't play that way.

Also, and I don't know if this will make anyone feel any better, and perhaps this has been discussed on these pages at length many times --- Stevens does not want to coach college ball. It's too slimy. It has much less to do with IU, whether we are still relevant, whether it is a top job, etc. --- and much much more to do with this simple fact. Not saying he didn't or isn't considering it. Just that it's not his preference.

It's the last line from the quote that gets me the most, however. "I'm just unfortunately skewed in a lot of ways .....  I guess." It's kind of heartbreaking to hear someone say that regardless of context. Speaks to some kind of inner turmoil. I was ready to be angry at Stevens for not wanting to come home. But bottom line he is not skewed for eating Dunkin Donuts (though many of us would disagree). Rather he is "skewed" for not taking a surefire career opportunity where he can count on job security for the next 25 years and legitimately bank 100+ miilion over that time because he is loyal to the person (and people) that believed in him enough to bring him to Boston. He knows Ainge is potentially on the hot seat as well and he's not going to leave a man behind. It's not his style. Yes, Stevens can always get another NBA head coaching job but is Ainge ever going to be GM again when his tenure is up? Likely not.

So I'm not mad at Stevens. And my Hoosier pride is not hurt because he's not coming. If anything my Hoosier pride grows as those are the types of hard and RIGHT decisions that we value here. But maybe I am just skewed as well.

Of course, if it does come out that he got a raise and matched IU I might feel different LOL ....... just highly doubt that was the case

At the risk of sounding dramatic, does anyone else feel like the wind has totally been taken out of their sails? Like I’d normally be ecstatic to get someone like, say Beard. But now since apparently missing on Stevens, I’m reverting to my old bitter Hoosier fan ways. Feels like no great coach would want to come here. And even if we made a “good” hire, feels like he’d just find some way to underachieve, like Archie. Feels like Stevens was the only one that could fully mobilize and unify all of us again. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, but it’s a tough time right now in general. We’re sitting at home during the tournament and we just seemingly got left at the mantle by our bride to be... I think once the new guy gets named the majority of the fan base will get excited again, assuming it’s a good hire.

Not at all from my viewpoint. There are ALWAYS options. Stevens option didn't work.

I think a lot of posters on here had all of their eggs in the Stevens basket. I didn't. Sure I'd take him gladly if he came, but it's not the end of the world, or IU basketball, because he reneged (supposedly).

I will always want a coach, and players that want to be at IU, not just play at IU.

Why is this thread still the most popular? Brad changing his mind? People falsely holding onto an unfounded hope? Not being a dick just asking and don't want to read the absurdities

I think this board and the discussion is the only thing keeping me interested in IU basketball these days. I've dreamed for a long time of the day when we would send shockwaves through the college basketball world with a hire that would convince everyone we mean business, like when UK got Calipari. I thought we were finally getting it now, but just like almost everything else in the last two decades, it inevitably failed. I honestly don't think we'll ever have an elite program again. Just too many obstacles and too many things working against us.
