Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

I'm not going to disparage Coach Stevens in any way. I would have gladly taken a chance on him at IU. But, like he said, he's 44 and not a kid anymore. And the championships that everyone thought he would deliver haven't materialised. At some point you are no longer the 'golden boy'. The Celtics fans seem to be approaching that point now. Like I said I would have loved him at IU. It was worth a shot. Didn't happen. He's not the only guy who could restore IU basketball. Personally, I wouldn't want to take a job with the pressure of being the savior of a historic program. Others may differ. Just not worth it to me. There are lots of coaches who can do the job. We just need to hire one and enjoy the ride.

I’ll add this:

Boston is a fantastic place—I can see why his family is loving it there. However, the life of an NBA coach is a vagabond life by nature. So this “Masshole for life” crap is only as good as the patience of the C’s owner with him and Ainge.

It’s over, all I’ll say is that wasn’t Brad Stevens at the presser yesterday.  I think that was a damage control presser from a PR guy for the Celtics.  No way that was Brad, no way.  It’s time to move on to the next!

Figured. There goes any excitement for this hiring cycle. Unless it's suprise hire that's super proven and credentialed. None of the popular names mentioned do it for me to be honest. I'll gladly be wrong if Beard is the guy and he creates a consistentl competitive program. I just don't expect him to do that.

That was pretty obvious to me as well watching that nonsense.

Definitely not that. I worked for the Celtics head of PR for 5 years. He's the senior most PR guy in the league. Has been there since '84. Hugely respected in the NBA by players, coaches, etc.

Absolutely, 100% not his style. He's the epitome of laid back, nice, and keeping it simple.

Do you think those were really Brads words? I know him a little bit and that was about as unBrad as you can get.  Even some of my Butler guys said that wasn’t Brad and they know him way better.  IMO it was damage control made by someone other than Brad.  I do trust you because I know you worked there but it was odd nonetheless

Greg Tonagel can fix IU basketball!

Hey BGleas,

I know you haven’t been there for awhile, but I’m curious about your opinion:

How long a leash do Ainge and Stevens have? “Massholes for life” or “you better start winning soon”

Any idea yet who the next might be?

I do. Knowing them first hand,, there's no way imaginable that came from the Celtics PR people.

I think Stevens probably thought he was speaking directly to the Boston media and trying to be funny. Those pregame media sessions are not scripted, etc.

But there's zero chance the Celtics PR people told him to do that.

Though I do think Indiana fans are blowing it out of proportion.

You seem like much more of a Celtics fan than an IU fan.  Just saying.

Sorry, I thought this was funny, since he is at Boston.

Agreed. Point is would you really want to start that over again considering how it's going in Boston?

If I had to guess...

The admin reached out about any possible interest. Interest was tentative. As things heated up and interest was further reciprocated, the BS camp said, in order for this to happen, we would need A, B, C, and D. Behind the scenes, the admin worked and got everything out together. The entire time, deniability was key and this the non answer the first time. When Indiana presented the requested A, B, C, and D to BS, he pontificated and decided nah. Whether that involved BS telling Ainge is unsure.

I would assume sources and boosters and the admin were of the understanding that providing a contract with A-D would lead to a yes, it actually only lead to serious consideration from BS.

The press conference after his decision was most likely a joint discussion with Ainge where BS tried to score some points with his base and close down the discussion.

anyway that’s my guess. Ultimately a misunderstanding. We secured everything requested by the two parties but ultimately the NBA is too attractive to turn down. Also the owner is behind him. Ainge gets cut before he does unless all the players band together to call him an idiot which is unlikely.

Stevens goes before Ainge. Easily. But he can get another coaching job easy, too. Rest of your theory sounds plausible.

It didn’t bother me one bit, what he said anyway.  I thought it was funny.  Brad is just not super witty on camera and looked nervous and uncomfortable saying the things.  You don’t think it was PR and I don’t think it was Brad, maybe it was Mayor Pete....LOL

I guess it all depends what you want in life.  Teach kids that want to be where they are, or deal with millionaire men getting paid to play basketball?
