General Coach Candidate News

Rabby said on the radio today that if he was choosing between Pearl, May, and Beard or the field that he was taking the field fyi

Very different question for Rabby on the Hysterics podcast. During that podcast he basically said that both Pearl and Beard are 'no-way' candidates.

So on the Hysterics podcast he was asked "Brad, Dusty, and Mick versus the field?"

He answered that Brad, Dusty, or Mick was more likely than the field, though he paused before stating that..

He's very careful when it comes to his wording on things that involve one specific candidate. I've been trying to bait him for weeks in the peegs chat on Monday nights lol

Just listened to RabJohn's on the radio and these were some things he talked about.

1) A lot of people wanted to move on from Woody after last year but a couple people didn't agree. Also said a lot of people around college basketball couldn't believe he got a 4th year

2) That Stevens and May will be the first to get a call.

3) Pearl is not involved

4) Beard has a huge uphill battle. Said that the one incident that was reported is probably not the first incident involving Beard. Also said he tried to get his name into the UL and UM job and those two didn't want anything to do with him.

We all know who the couple of people were that gave us the 4th year fiasco.

Dolson was in contact with him and Pearl last offseason.  IU could’ve hired either … then QB got involved - again.

Yea I don’t doubt that, but that doesn’t answer my question of where this weird narrative that Dusty negotiated a smaller buyout to be able to bolt to IU after one season came from. Of all the stuff we throw around here, UL turning down his “buyout demand” is maybe the silliest. He pretty clearly chose Michigan over UL and Vandy—not Michigan was the only school willing to agree to a small IU buyout clause.  I can’t find anything to support that.

I wish people would quit with this Stevens stuff, we’re not getting that guy. IU is nowhere near as desirable as it was say 15-20 years ago. There is no way Stevens is leaving his current cake job for this headache here in the B1G. Each post I read, if I see something regarding Stevens. I just move on and the quicker some of you let go of this pipe dream, the better. Zero chance people

Serious question have you ever coached basketball and then stopped? I have coached middle school basketball for over 10 years and this year had to give it up because of my sons select baseball schedule and every day I still think about coaching and how I can’t wait until my son gets in 5th grade so I can coach again. When you’re a coach you don’t just say oh I’m done and never doing it again unless you’re not a competitor and you hate it or you physically can’t do it anymore. You absolutely want back on the sideline and the itch gets bigger and bigger the further away you get.

All due respect, and we haven’t spoken directly on here or via messages. But it was widely reported in the media that BS turned down IU’s 7 year/$70m offer. So based on your sources, we weren’t far along in conversations before throwing a contract offer to him? I know you have connections in Boston, but my connections at IU would not discuss contract numbers unless we had both done due diligence and were preparing to negotiate. Not looking to argue, and respect what you’re saying. But in my opinion and according to my sources on the IU side, we were at the end stages of agreeing to hire BS last time until some things went wrong.

And if Brad or Tracy were seriously negotiating with IU do you really think Brad would go and inform the Celtics brass of that?  No one who is thinking of taking another job goes and tells their current employer that until it’s a done deal.

People were confident on Stevens last time too, then he publicly stated he has no interest.

It's not happening. Even if the new owners wanted to go in a different direction another NBA franchise would scoop him up.

I do feel like Stevens probably has an idea of who is going to put an offer in to buy the Celtics and do his research on If he wants to work for those owners or not.

I think that’s the conventional wisdom but at the executive level these things tend to work differently. Not uncommon to have such conversations if you are well regarded in the organization and don’t want to burn bridges / try to give yourself leverage.

I'm sure that already has a good idea from the last few weeks who is exactly interested and who is not.

On a side not I love all the new people joining but some of them have no idea how this process works.

For the new people, to be fair, they probably missed out on process 101 with KathyC.

You beat me to it. My COO has openly interviewed and been head hunted for a couple CEO positions elsewhere. It was never a secret. Our organization understands we will lose an amazing COO if our CEO doesn’t retire before he feels the need to move on. It’s not uncommon at all.

Reminder....Jerry mentioned wayyyyyyy back 1000 posts ago in the retire Woodson thread that "we have our guy" and that we would know before the tournament starts....either he was wrong OR most likely someone NOT coaching in the tournament. It looks like most of the coaches mentioned will be in the tournament, including May, Pearl, Beard, McCollum, Drew, etc....Jay Wright, Brad Stevens and Billy Donovan only 3 mentioned that will definitely not be coaching in the tournament this year. Am I missing anyone? I mean unless its a D2 coach....or, lord help us, Randy Wittman....

It's the old Silent Verbal play.

I would highly recommend the first 30 minutes of CurryHicksSage’s #searchSZN last night: https://twitter.com/curryhickssage/status/1889142509701365822?s=46

He talks at a high level about how all this works and then gets into his thoughts on IU. He’s plugged into Cbb coaching circles but is open that he doesn’t have any particular unique connections at IU.

Two guys he mentions that we haven’t discussed much here that I think are strong:

1. Todd Golden. Cleared of the non-criminal Title IX charge at UF, team is currently top 5 on Kenpom and top 10 in both O and D. 39 years old. CHS characterizes the charges as “being horny online” so you’d think if there were, e.g. unsolicited Richard pictures he might’ve been found liable even if the sanction was something much less than losing his job. Wonder if a fresh start in a new place might appeal.

2. Pat Kelsey. I find his schtick somewhat annoying but it seems *genuine*, quick turnaround at UL, not paid lots there so would be an easy get.

I love Dusty, so I don’t say this lightly, but to me these are coaches IU would do well to pursue if they can’t get the very tip top of the list
