General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

I think one reason so many of us want Brad Stevens, besides him being a great coach and motivator, is more than anyone else, he brings our fanbase together! The only problem I have with him is my iPad keeps wanting to put an apostrophe in his last name, which would be something I would just have to learn to deal with….

Thanks. This is the kind of answer I was trying to illicit. I think I must have worded the question poorly. I keep getting answers to why not, I am looking for what it would take for people to be open to it. I can accept that there are people that will never be okay with it, but I also have to believe that most people aren’t beyond redemption. Maybe he doesn’t deserve grace, but it also seems that grace is in short supply these days.

1) Assuming he’s hired this year: begin and end his successful career at IU without incident.

in the alternative:

2) Spend another 5 years or so where he is at meaningfully rehabilitating himself and again, have zero incidents.

Absent that he’s always going to be seen by some, myself included, as a ticking time bomb waiting to embarrass and/or destroy the program.

You and others are, of course, free to embrace him immediately and wholeheartedly.

The more I read a variety of opinions, the more I come back to:

Stevens

May

McCasland

Gates

as the four guys I would 1,000% get behind. And while only two of them would win the press release, all four would win the press conference and all four would win a ton of games at IU.

And all four of them are young enough to be 20 year hires.

Respectfully, $92m over 10 years.

Do you think (if terms were agreed to) this is something that could move quickly and be announced before the end of the season?  Or will this be held off until after the B1G tournament??

Gates?!? Idk if i can support someone who has a season where they didn’t win 1 conference game.

I personally am very high on Otzelberger... besides the apparently large buyout, there's the family issue.. his wife played volleyball at Iowa State and wants to stay there... maybe Scott can draw them away... Indy is closer to Ames than Virginia...

Crazy what a couple years will do for a coaching search.    5 years ago Beard was the guy that was mentioned as a slam dunk to coach a blue blood.   Holtmann was the name to look out for with the Kentucky job since he is from Kentucky.  Last year Schertz was a name that was thrown around as a legitimate chance to go to IU.  Mack was a name that was thrown out as a big time miss by IU the first time around

underwood was looked at as a lower hire then Holtmann and Miller during that cycle and after a couple of bad seasons (worst in Illinois history)

Fast forward 5 years and Beard is at Ole Miss(his own doing) and is hoping for a second chance at a big time school

Holtmann is at DePaul

Schertz hasn’t been mentioned once on here since the opening was announced

Underwood was the last man standing in the B1G from that cycle he was hired in
I’m confident that IU will get it right this cycle   Sooner or later water finds its level

And through all the changes, one thing remains constant.  Indiana fans still want Brad Stevens.

Brad coming home easily. I know most don’t believe this but Scott started cultivating this relationship with Brad last March. Doesn’t mean we’ll get him but letting him handle this gives us a really good chance.

Just keep Ferguson a million miles away from Brad and Tracy.

Okay, so you are not straight-up opposed. I understand why you think it won’t be him, I want to understand what he would have to do for you to accept him as Indiana’s coach?

Accept him? I’ll accept him if he’s hired because as I said above I’m willing to trust the due diligence of the staff. But here’s the thing: the particulars are different, but there are similarities to the Sampson hire. If you’re Dolson and bring in a guy with a known history and you do it by standing in front of him he can’t ever F up. Not once. Sampson came with the same deal, you can’t F up, and it took him 18 months. But, yeah, if they hire him I’ll root for the program and if he has an issue I’ll say Dolson should be fired because it was completely foreseeable. And I’ll hope it never happens.

Feels like we had a lot of people lurking, waiting for the Woody shoe to drop. Welcome, post and lose the jockstrap!

I get it. They were missing something like five of their top seven players for SEC play. He’s been fantastic every other year, including this year in a super tough SEC.

Dennis Gates is whip smart (academic all American who graduated Cal Berkeley in 3 years) a great recruiter with sh!t NIL, develops players, and he’s done plenty of winning. He’s got the current number 15 team in the country and halfway through conference play he’s LOW-KEY ahead of Tennessee, Ole Miss/Beard and UK among others. His teams defend like dogs, run modern offense, and his players would run through a wall for him. And he’s 45 and clean as a whistle. Sorry if it offends, but anyone that appreciates McCollum’s 21-2 at Drake over 17-5 in the SEC is bash!t crazy.

curious what @Uspshoosier thinks of him and McCasland; the postman knows the whole country like none other.

Outside of his age, what about Stevens makes you think that he would be here 20 years?

Underwood was my guy in the Archie cycle. Just sayin’. Proof positive that the blind squirrel theory is undefeated.
