General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

I feel like the religion thing is going to spiral since religion (and especially evangelical Christianity) is politically coded these days.

That said, I haven’t seen anyone on here be anti-religious. Stevens is very outspoken about his faith; so is the coach he hired for the Celtics. No one holds this against Stevens.

But Drew is a different kind of Christian—one who sees the influence of God in every single part of his life (and also tries to serve God in every single part). It’s worth being honest about the different kinds of religion and how Drew’s is much more extreme than what most Americans practice.

(Signed, the son of an Evangelical preacher who hasn’t gone to church since the Crean era.)

I think the religious aspect is more the “institutional” perspective than personal. Agree or disagree with his beliefs, blurring the lines of personal belief and team dynamics is a risk that IU institutionally may not wish to take.

Then again there’s always Al Davis—“just win baby”

Dolson should have a pretty good idea on whether or not he wants to take that risk after the Tom Allen era. Drew and Allen aren't much different, if they are at all, in this way.

Religion shouldn't matter at all when it comes to coaching.  3 of the teams in this week's top 5 have Jewish head coaches.
Isn't tony Bennett super religious. Seems we are just looking for any reason now to disqualify good coaches so we can hire a turgeon type in the end.

living in the bluegrass state, I can tell you that they will deny that they "really wanted him" until the sun don't shine...even though its true.  Brain power and a non-bias mind are not among BBN's strong suits

Haha — that’s funny.  As we know UK put a full court press on him for like five days.  Mitch Barnhart was leveraging his relationship with Drew, they flew his family out to Lexington, and when UK fans found out he was at some Mexican restaurant in Waco they all started calling the restaurant.

I do worry about getting him after he turned UK down, as we know he and his family and his program and pretty woven into the religious aspects of Baylor.  They have a big house and a lot of family down there.

But who knows?  $2M+ per year for your roster at IU is pretty darn appealing and he knows Indiana.

Beard beats his girlfriend- out
Drew is too religious- out

We are covering every end of the spectrum now. I guess we are looking for an occasional church going but maybe only goes on holidays.

Yup. No one will hire him and then go, whoa it turns out this guy is really into religion.

I am not worried about it. I think KathywithaC’s process may not be enthralled…

I just don’t buy the Drew talk. Yes, Big Ten money is different, but Baylor has great NIL and is a basketball school. He’s lived in Waco since 2003, has a brand new arena to play in as well. He hasn’t accepted any other job but would listen to Indiana because he grew up there? I don’t buy it.

Yes you can argue the Stevens talk is similar, however, Stevens isn’t a coach currently. Coaches don’t just quit coaching, he’ll be a coach again somewhere. He has the itch to coach again.

Not saying it'll be Drew, but the issue isn't just NIL, it's revenue-share in a post-House settlement world. Big 10 schools are better positioned than Big XII schools to pay athletes the full allowable amount of revenue share. So many Big XII schools may soon find themselves at a monetary disadvantage in recruiting aside from NIL.

And then add in the fact that IU had suggested it'll not only pay the full allowable revenue share amount, but will allocate a higher percentage of those funds to hoops than most schools, and IU may soon be in a particularly favorable position compared to most other programs.

Whether that's enough to get Drew to move is another matter. But there are reasons to think that the IU job might be especially appealing now, even in ways that might not have been the case for the UK opening last year given the timing of the House settlement.

It has been well documented that Turgeon is left-handed. We must not hire a left-handed coach. They must be eliminated from the candidate list. There is just something about left-handed coaches.....

A few people who are the money behind this have places there. I have heard Fuzzy Zoeller name more this year than any other year. Maybe he's the Zoeller and not Cody Zeller.

I'm sure it's rather common knowledge but Fuzzy and Ned are pretty close "buds"
