At this point finishing above .500 in the B1G and making the tournament every season comfortably would feel like night and day to the last decade. Yea Cronin is meh from an excitement perspective, but maybe he takes everything he’s done and learned, combines it with our resources and takes another step as a coach. We could do way worse than Cronin. Yeah I could definitely see a path to me wearing that "We're Back" shirt quickly, but I would want to wait and see a minute. OKHOOSIER 1

Do you think that could be due to the lack of autonomy for basketball within the AD? Clearly Woody getting force hired didn’t happen in a vacuum, I’m guessing in coaching circles it wasn’t a secret how the department was being dictated by the donor class and people outside the department with too much influence on the basketball program. I could totally see a coach wanting nothing to do with the post Archie mess that landed us Woodson. AZ Hoosier 1
DSUMMITT Posted March 5, 2025 Posted March 5, 2025 (edited) As newby on this board - I can say 'yes some come to troll' for sure but some of us just haven't been excited about the program for 2 years and then only slightly 'cautiously' optimistic - before that watching Miller for 4 years was like a standing 20 to 25 appointments at the dentist (usually early season lightweight weren't bad - usually...) - I went and watched but man I rarely enjoyed it. I'd like to think I try to 'say nothing at all if I can't say anything nice' but more then anything I just didn't want to relive it by discussing it. I will say I belong to other sites (I'm old - started on IIBF) but this one is usually much more forgiving of silliness and off-the-wall ideas. Don't get me wrong - I like hearing inside info but that's not the main reason I post here during the coaching search. I still love the idea of A tier (May, Stevens, or Drew) - if that doesn't work out I'm only 'ok' with the next tier (Cronin, McDermott) - almost rather go for a solid up and comer like Mccollum. As many have said - I feel like just about everyone we've listed would be an insane improvement. Edited March 5, 2025 by DSUMMITT thebigweave, 8bucks, OKHOOSIER and 3 others 5 1

My current list of legitimate candidates: Drew Otz Collins Schertz McCasland Cronin Huss McCollum McDermott Brownell I'm willing to state that I think it is likely we will have one of those ten guys as the next coach at IU. Based on what I have heard (including things not on the open board) and in no particular order, that's my list. Probably correct that it’s one of these ten, IMO, though Schertz, Huss, and McCollum don’t have P5 HC experience, which per Thamel is a filter. Between buyout and what @Uspshoosier has posted, I doubt it’s Cronin. Finally, I feel pretty confident one of the others could be convinced before you got to Brownell. Stuhoo 1

Cronin hasn’t finished worse than 5th in any conference he’s coached in since 2012. 32 divided by 6 = 8 or 9. Cool. jimsorgi and thebigweave 1 1

Their NIL sucks and playing in a conference that makes zero geographical sense has tainted that job. That and UCLA has poor facilities and pitiful fan support. It’s a pro town, always has been always will be. OKHOOSIER 1
spe317 Posted March 5, 2025 Posted March 5, 2025 I’m only saying this half-joking but if you could control who you hire, would you really want Mick Cronin reporting to you? I’d rather not manage him personally. Given it may be a-holes and personalities at this level but I’m not sure I’d want to manage him. Seems like another sour relationship like Woodson albeit for different reasons. JF87, Chris007, lillurk and 1 other 4

Not sure I just knew last cycle he wasn’t going to be the IU coach when most national people were pushing it which was expected with his Midwest ties. I let the other mods know on the mod board that he wasn’t a candidate. Last I talked to someone about him was last year and was told Midwest was too cold for him now. lol. HoosierSadaseci Posted March 5, 2025 Posted March 5, 2025 I truly trust Chris and the information he brings...and Chris has even said that Brad Stevens is unlikely to be the next coach at IU...and this is no way a knock on Chris... What sticks with me though is that Stevens apparently did give us a look last time...and Dolson has created a friendship of sorts with Stevens, or at least been communicating with him... From that you would think Dolson would be able to gauge Steven's interest now...and by some accounts he's not interested... Then why was Woodson's "retirement " announced when it was...I don't think it happens mid-season unless Dolson felt strongly in a certain candidate...especially with the chance for the team to still make the tournament... So either he wanted to get ahead of things for May...but it appears to have fallen through...or he feels confident in someone like Stevens... Regardless we're going to end up with an upgrade over Woodson... hoosierfan6157, Chris007, kottke and 3 others 6
