Serious question….if Brownell is a serious candidate, why not Alford?

Well, we can't say for certain what Dolson or anyone in power is thinking about Brownell (a man I like quite a bit) and what makes him a candidate but in direct comparison to Alford and looking in the NIL era:

Brownell had a strong season in 2023-2024 and then a great tournament run. He is having Clemson's best ACC season in the history of the program after losing PJ Hall and Joe Girard. He also does not have the "former great IU player" tag that could be a detriment in this particular coaching cycle. Compare that to Steve Alford...he has not been past the round of 64 since 2016-2017, Nevada is 15-10 and 7-7 in the Mountain West. You could argue that one is on the ascendancy and the other is on the decline. In addition, I know many AAU coaches and high school coaches in the state of Indiana (certainly cannot speak for all of them) like and respect Brad Brownell and do not feel the same way about Steve Alford.

I'll close with...I do not believe either will be offered the job and this conversation is likely moot.

Exactly….we already know Alford failed at the P5 level twice…..

The amazing thing is that - with hindsight - hiring Alford instead of Sampson would have clearly been the better move. Alford likely would have done at least what he managed at UCLA, and would have been excellent at recruiting the state. Would have also started to wear out his welcome right when Stevens began his assent.

A nice piece of alternate history!

Brad has signed. Will hear about this publicly before noon today. If not then disregard me forever. I TOLD you all to be patient and didn't listen but I'm in too good of a mood now

Ok, it is 3:15pm CST here in Evansville, and I don't see any news on ESPN or Inside The Hall on a new IU coach being hired, but I do see news on Jimmy Johnson retiring from the FOX pre-game show after 31 years.  I guess they haven't received the MEMO yet.

Trilly posted his hot board...I did not see it so I am relying on the information provided to be accurate. Likely all agents and other coaches speculating but for whatever it is worth, his list was as follows:

Tier One - Otzelberger/Drew

Tier Two - McCollum/Brownell/McDermott

Oooof.

From what I’ve heard. TJ wants to stay at Iowa State. I highly doubt Drew has any interest in the Indiana job.

Taking a risk on McCollum would be a choice, not a popular one. I don’t imagine the boosters would be happy with that. Could throw in the Clemson coach as well despite recent uptick in his career.

Greg would be interesting. They have NIL and money over there at Creighton. Does he want to be in the Big Ten at Indiana? His name gets thrown around for every big opening but he has stayed put.

A Mike Woodson hire followed by a Brad Brownell hire would be a harder one-two punch to the gut than anything Muhammad Ali could ever dream of landing.
But it's such an iu thing to do. Then wpe spend months gaslighting ourselves that it could work. Just like with woodson
Bronwell just needs 13 years to get this thing going.

Good idea, that's basically what this thread is now.

IU brass is coming around to the idea of Chris Beard in Bloomington. Lots of conversations by his agents behind the scenes this past weekend, trying to prove that he is a new man. Not a done deal, but it’s trending toward at least a possibility.

Don’t shoot the messenger!

If that's truly the case, either hell has frozen over or Dolson has been taken behind the woodshed one too many times.

Don’t forget we also hired Archie right before Woodson.
But archie was a sure thing home run. I see guys on rwitter claiming the same thing about mccollum. He winsand he will win here they say. I guess they totally forgot about the archie hype.

It wouldn't surprise ANYONE in the least if Otz or Drew passed on the IU job (if they were actually offered). Both have non-basketball-related reasons that could keep them in their current conditions.

Drew passed on the Kentucky job last year.He loves being at a Christian college. Of course he might pass on IU, as Kentucky has been a much better job over the past 25 years (at least) than the IU job.

And Otz's wife played at Iowa State, so who knows if he will ever leave Ames?

I think it’s generally assumed within the coaching fraternity that Otz (among other coaches) would drop whatever he’s doing and run to Lawrence if Self retired. I suspect that is why his buyout was substantially reduced in his most recent extension-Kansas job, and maybe Texas job, more than the IU job.
