General Coach Candidate News

Or....and hear me out

Running off a coach, and alum at that, who has taken his team to the tournament 3 times in 4 seasons relegates the candidate list to "mediocre P5 coaches" and hungry up and comers.

So the folks so certain we aren’t getting a good coach are just Woodson supporters.  Got it.

Come on with Brownell....Has the guy even won a conference title anywhere???

Trust me, Brownell isn't anywhere near my list, but just get the general feeling that he's not nearly as far-fetched of a candidate as people want to believe. If you're like me and understood this entire time that guys like Stevens, Pearl, Oats, etc weren't entertaining the IU job, let alone coming, Brad Brownell as a potential candidate makes some sense on the surface.

I said back on Feb 3rd that if I was the IU AD I would give out 3 offers: Will Wade, Mick Cronin, and TJ Otzelberger and you wouldn't have to worry about hiring another coach for another 15-20 years.

Ok, I was one of the last Brad holdouts. I had been told like others that he wanted to coach again but the timing was not right before. I was holding onto the stories that others had reported about offers and counter offers. However more recently I was told that he was not interested at all now because his daughter was playing on a state contending soccer team in Massachusetts and he was not willing to move her. There is also a chance with the change of Celtics ownership, he might have an opportunity for a minority equity stake.  That could dwarf IUs best offer. I also was told that he wouldn’t allow the discussion to get to talking dollars this time, so I discount the offer rumors. I have given up on that white whale dream, That having been said, I am underwhelmed with the possibilities on the board. If I had any confidence that Brad was a consideration in two years, I think Woody coming off a deep NCAA run might be preferable to four years of a second or third tier candidate that would be divisive and have a sizeable percentage of this board crowing about what an obvious stupid hire it was after every loss. I am sorry but this is getting tiresome

Appreciate you holding out as long as you could. Don't worry we're going to get a good coach.

Brad Brownell inherited a Clemson program coming off of three consecutive NCAA tourney appearances. He proceeded to make a grand total of three tourney appearances in his first THIRTEEN seasons there.

I am happy for his success the last two years. But I would rather take a chance on an up and comer than hire known mediocrity.

Won his conference or tied for it 3 times at Wright State. Never better than tied for 3rd at Clemson.

If jobs at UNC, Kansas, UConn, UCLA, Syracuse, Louisville, Arizona,  or maybe Illinois, etc. -- schools that are generally considered better at basketball than football -- opened, would Brad Brownell be considered a candidate? Highly doubtful -- or if so, only because of recency bias (Clemson did make the Elite Eight last year and is having a great season this year).

But in 14 seasons at Clemson, Brownell had made four NCAA tourneys.

If he weren't from Indiana, his name would never be mentioned in connection with IU.

He’s not a good candidate but…

Steve Lavin, Steve Alford, Kenny Payne, Kevin Ollie, Matt Doherty, and a couple others have been hired by those schools.

So …yea, Brownell isn’t exactly out of the realm of possibilities.

Doubtful.  CBB coaches all recognize Mike was given significant resources and he did a bad job and he deserved to be fired.

That said, getting CBB coaches to move jobs is tough.  IUBB offers significant resources and a big payday... but I'm not sure who will bite on that.

Dude squeeking into a play in game two out of four years and missing one year is not going to cut it at a lot of top 20 jobs.  Can we stop with nonsense like this?  He barely won and had the easiest OOC schedule than any coach since Knight was fired.  He has the most blow out loses.  Just stop.  Coaches in state think our staff sucks.

And the one year he had an all-time great Hoosier and a first round pick at point guard, he couldn't get out of the first weekend of the tournament.

We can discuss further once a coach has been named.

If Dolson’s “criteria” is mediocre P5 coach then he could make that argument. But there isn’t an IU fan out there who will buy that Brownell fits any criteria other than “IU isn’t a serious basketball school and can’t get a legitimate coach.” The Woodson hire was strong evidence and that would just confirm it. 4 tournaments in 14 years. 0 conference championships or even 2nd place finishes. He’s the hire you make when you give up.

100 percent agreement with you. Which makes the other 3 guys being brought up laughable especially Groce . but alas this is what you get when you’re going on week 4 of a coaching search with arguably 2-3 weeks to go .
