I’m not sure I get the “IU fish bowl”. What do we do? We hire bad to mediocre coaches, pay them a **** ton of money, keep them around longer than we should, rinse and repeat. If anything, our standards have dropped to the point where if I were a coach, I’d be wondering why IU has put up with such crappy results for so long.

Just another way of complaining about the pressure I guess. 20 years of mediocre results will do that to a job with the history IU has.

However I personally think NIL era erases this fishbowl argument. IU can give most of these guys more resources than where they are. That’s a fact

Afraid McCasland is in the same boat!

Seems so unfortunately... I have no idea what's realistic to expect with this search.

Just of the names we throw around, and what I think is realistic (probably missing a few people, no particular order within tiers)

  • Tier 1: McDermott (I'd put Drew and McCasland here if I thought either would leave TX)
  • Tier 2: Cronin/Buzz
  • Tier 3: Gates / Pitino Jr.
  • Tier 4: Calhoun, Byington, McCollum, Schertz

Goodmans choice is Iowa states coach, said his buyout isn’t crazy, but then stated he’s not sure he’d like being in the Iu fish bowl

Would be an excellent choice but I’m guessing he’s another that is likely not leaving his current situation.

Kentucky is a fishbowl. Pope is having no problems handling it. It's a weird (and bad) excuse for mediocre coaches to fall back on when they don't succeed here.

The right coach will embrace it. Aside from his recruiting issues, Tom Crean is probably the only coach since Bob Knight to properly handle the fish bowl here. In my opinion he did an incredible job with fan engagement during his time with the program, especially the first three years when we were @$$. He failed here for other reasons.

That’s true, but you have to have a coach that can assess talent and find guys that fit into your program….Cignetti gave us all a master class in that in football, now we need to find someone to do it for our basketball team!

Seriously?  I have watched more basketball than most people on this board besides OldFart and a few others. This guy has coached in D1 less than 1 year.  There is a major difference between D1 and D2.  The program is at the point where we can’t base it off of a possible what if, they need a guarantee winner from D1.  I am not saying 4 or 5 years from now that he wouldn’t work out but IU just can’t and shouldn’t take that chance.

Hooping is hooping. What’s different are all the things that surround programs at different levels and how that impacts your ability to attract and retain top talent. News flash: that doesn’t matter for IU anymore. IU has the NIL to get great players with even a remotely competent program manager. What IU needs is an Xs and Os guy. This guy is obviously that.

Our holier than thou attitude needs to go away.  There is no coach or fan that is perfect. Everyone has skeletons in their closet and nobody is perfect.  I really trust Dolson is really looking at him and doing his due diligence to see if he’s improved himself and is making amends for what he had done.  Nobody is perfect and it’s time to look the other way and give this guy at least a look.  In Scott Dolson I trust!

I can guarantee there are a ton of good coaches who have not choked their fiancée to passing out and spent the night in jail for it.   JFC.  If I ever do that, please nobody hire me.

He coaches at Ole Miss. He took Texas Tech to their first final four in school history.

and he got drunk, choked and bit his fiancee... if you're going to use his history, you have to use all of his history.

Yes because they are smart. They know he is a hell of a coach and would win big here. They also probably root for a school who if they had a chance to land a home run like beard it would happen. However the joke is on them! We are iu and will not hire a top coach because he made mistakes in the past!

Nope won't be considered. No second chances at iu.

Popes in his honeymoon phase. At this point in Woodys tenure everyone loved him too.

UK isn’t even in the top half of the SEC. Another yer like this one next year and we’ll see how good he is at the fishbowl aspect. They’ll run him out of town too.

It would be a dark day for the university to hire Beard. The university is better than hiring a woman beater to be its highest paid employee.

They won’t do it.
Guilty until proven innocent!! Got it.

Puts more pressure on the new coach however if the next coach wins big then missing out on Dusty May last cycle won’t be a big deal however miss on this hire and May continues to build Michigan up then it becomes a very big deal.   IU is going to get a very good coach this cycle

Don’t underestimate IU’s ability to f**k up a vitally important basketball hire.
