It’s Gates. He’s not an innovator; he’s a very smart motivator that players would run through a brick wall for.

As proven by the Mizzou players during his post game interview just now.

The hush pose they all gave was great!

If only we kept Crean! I don't care what you say. He was the guy who developed players and was a system guy.  He needed more years.  Tell me we would not be in a way better spot if he was still here! Tell me! We had our guy.

Watched that game in person; it didn't get better than that. Even his Big Ten Championship was that team hanging on for dear life to the end. Just ran out of steam. Unfortunately, he ran his course.

I think Tom Crean needed to be fired, but I think he needed to be fired for himself in addition to Indiana. I think he's learned and grown a lot and I wish someone would give him a shot somewhere. He'll always still be Tom Crean and almost all that entails, but I think especially his Indiana experience was very emotional. Very low, lows and very high, highs. His time here wore on everyone including himself.

The Crean years were marked by high peaks and really low valleys. 2008-2011 can't fairly be blamed on him entirely, but 2011-13 and 2015-16 were great while every other season was a disaster. The inconsistency on the court was a symptom of the recruiting failures that began to plague the program after 2013. Crean burned a lot of bridges in Indiana at the HS level and AAU circuit. Coaches didn't want to send their players to IU while he was there.

If he had been able to maintain those relationships and keep Kentucky, Michigan State, etc., from coming into town and taking our best players every year, things might've ended differently (or never ended at all).

Crean's a good guy. And I think at this stage of life he's had more time for self-reflection and personal growth, and I think he's in a healthy spot. He definitely took his firing hard and never really recovered while coaching. It made me happy to see him call a game with John Fanta the other day, and I hope they team up to call many more. That was fun.

But none of that makes me want him back as the coach.

Thanks for linking the vid, definitely gonna watch that back. That was such an incredible game.

Everyone isn’t an innovator. Who are the true innovators in the past 50 years? Bob Knight, Paul Westhead for sure, maybe Boeheim or Pitino for their hyper-aggressive zones. Not many.

Bucky McMillan is maybe the most innovative that I’ve seen mentioned in this thread.

I said Gates is a really good coach… and a GREAT motivator and recruiter. That’s enough to go a really long way at a place like IU.

Come on....flavor of the month again....some coach nobody was discussing because he should NOT be on the list, beats a top ranked team and all of the sudden hes on the list? Come on....this usually happens during the tournament....Gates is NOT IU bound.

Flavor of the month? Even with that terrible year last year he’s at 56% wins in the SEC. And that Missouri team was a bottom feeder before him. This year they’re #15?nationally and 9-4 in the SEC. Did the same at Cleveland St.

And as Hamilton’s top assistant and lead recruiter at FSU? Here’s a graphic of Gates’ last five seasons at FSU, followed by the five seasons that followed:

Gates is young, but he’s been a chosen one for a very long time.

BRAD ******* STEVENS

You should get that trademarked @68Hoosier Lol

Tis a joke before anyone takes this sh!tpost seriously…

If I was smart, I would have gotten the rights on a web page and a trademark.  They would be knocking down the doors to get rights in two weeks.

I would like to believe but it seems the day (2 weeks, Mar 1st then end of BTT) we will know keeps sliding back. Would love to have been on the AAU call or to know that we indeed scheduled games because we have our guy. But the changing date.

Unless Dolson knows for sure Stevens is coming I start ramping up my efforts for May. Can’t let second choice get away. Especially since I have May right there with Stevens.

I can understand the skepticism.  Though, Jerry has said after the B1G tournament the entire time.  He hasn’t changed that stance one bit.  I definitely believe him about being told to quiet down.  As always, time will tell.  I’m still rolling with Stevens as the next coach.

He’s been told to keep quiet by the athletic department?  That would imply they know his identity.  I can’t imagine he would ever get any inside info again if true.

I’ve got a couple FSU grads down here and they want Gates big time. They are worried about coaxing him to the ACC before they get out of the grant of rights and into a different conference. They think he’s all but a lock other than that.

If I recall correctly @Stuhoo mentioned Gates pretty early in the discussion. It was only minimally discussed at the time, but some did have him on the radar. He's just not a sexy name yet.

He said in his post that he was asked to be a little more quiet.  I don’t know anything else beyond that.

You are exactly right he never said there was an agreement in place. He actually said he was talking to someone who wasn't a college coach right now. He was hoping to hear if they wanted the job in the next two weeks.

Way too specific. Everyone would know who that is.
