Super unpopular take for this board. Go get beard. I think overall most fans would support him. Can't worry about a few who hate him

Nope. Lots of people wont support him due to the specific transgressions he was accused of

I think the main problem is the varying options on how good of a job the IU position is. I see people pleading for others to discuss "realistic" candidates. Well, my idea of how good the job is maybe more positive than yours and, therefore my pool of candidates that are realistic compared to yours would include people you feel are unrealistic. I know I'm stating the obvious, but it's frustrating when people start whining about discussions that are happening about candidates THEY deem out of reach....

I think the UK and UL openings really tempered what people deem realistic. UK in particular swung at multiple bigger names than Pope and got turned down. Just my theory. If anyone was gonna make a big pull it would have been UK, Rupp Rafters was melting down over Pope getting hired. They’re all happy now but it was not super popular.

Dusty May

Nate Oats

Bruce Pearl

Would be my 1,2,3

I like your list. Dusty: I like how he redirected high praise for his staff and players when he could have taken compliments for himself in the IU postgame presser. Last year I liked how he absorbed a considerable amount of responsibility for a couple of losses I watched in postgame pressers. Oats like Hoiberg, I don't feel we could get them to IU. Pearl: I love how long and dogged athletic his teams are. I'm not sure there is another coach I would enjoy more to have the bottom-right 25% of the screen isolating on for the entire game in their own little window.  The guy is a non-stop ball of energy. He is an animal and I have no problem with his age. Not as confident, but I think BS is still on the table.

Is it open mic  night at the comedy club?   Alford's not going to get a sniff nor is any other former RMK player. That ship has sailed courtesy of Michael Woodson and Quinn Buckner and probably Wittman as well.

There was a time when he was the obvious choice and would have recruited the State better than anyone….then the problem with Pierce and the timing could not have been worse. It’s why I am pretty sure Beard never gets serious consideration even though he is a better coach!

Think there is almost 0% chance of this happening. Board wouldn’t approve him. Would potentially lose massive donors. Plenty of good coaches out there that can win that don’t have the massive baggage that Beard has. All you have to do is look no further than Kevin Wilson. They arent going to entertain someone like Beard.

Yea.  Same issues UL, UM, and UK had when they didn’t look at him in their processes.  UNC won’t consider him either.

We can debate them until we’re blue in the face but given the criteria Thamel outlined, I don’t think Byington, Schertz, or McCollum are likely shortlist candidates. Byington is the only one who hits both sitting high major head coach AND has made a D1 tournament.

Not an argument about who’s a good coach, just that those two criteria probably mean pining for one of those is a waste of time.

What was the reason that we think Otzelberger is not a good candidate?  I can’t remember if it was a “he won’t come “ or a “we can do better “?

Conversely asking “why would he leave the job he’s in?” helps rule out some others. @Stuhoo mentioned Oats and Golden; I do wonder if Golden may desire a change of scenery or “fresh start” but it’s a good heuristic.

Now, maybe the answer is also in Thamel’s criteria: consistent, top 10 nationally NIL. I don’t know how e.g. Florida compares there. This is also why I’m skeptical of Buzz, TAMU can really spend. Michigan can too, though the longer any contract extension drags out the more optimistic I would be about May.

More the former, people think his wife won’t leave, as she was a star at ISU. He also has a pretty sizable buyout.

IU should see what’s possible though.
