General Coach Candidate News

The biggest problem with May, and there are several, is he likely has a good chance at a second weekend team with Michigan. That is way less than ideal for TP timing. Although, I suppose backchannel agent talks can help alleviate some of this inconvenience.

Feel like I have an echo of people getting paid for their information. I’ve made a huge mistake. :)

In your opinion did Dusty pass today as a backup?

First weekend of the dance is March 22-23. Gotta think that would be the earliest we hear anything.

…unless it’s the candidate who’s not a sitting coach. In that case I wonder if it could be lined up a little earlier; e.g. whenever IU’s played its last game.

Also one other Otz vs May thought: there’s probably some philosophical or implicit defense vs offense (respectively) preference. Not that Otz can’t coach O or May D, just that they have relative strengths.

Definitely fair. Player recruiting is so much different to predict though. I’ve been hoodwinked a few times (Trey Kaufman comes to mind). Kids just aren’t as formal and they tend to run their mouths for attention high can lead to things changing for one reason or another. Administration stuff and coaches, with the agents and lawyers and brand deals, etc. are a bit easier to follow with higher levels of certainty. And before the last negotiation with BS gets brought up, it WAS a done deal. As close as it can be when it’s in the pre-contact phase of the talks. We blew it in a lot of ways that have been beat to death. But at the time, that wasn’t bad information. It should have been believed. It just didn’t work out in that instance. Just my two cents for sown reference as someone who is on record as saying we will get our guy. It’s all happening.

Can you objectively think of any factors that can prevent us from getting “our guy”?

You’re alright, Yeags.

(As long as you’re “all right”) ;-)

NBA playoffs don’t start till the middle of April. Can’t see a GM leaving a good team before or in the middle of a playoff run if you are hoping for Stevens.

If Brad truly wants the IU job, I could see him leaving easily.

If for some reason he left and Boston went on to win it all, he would get the credit and still get a ring

Realistically how much work is there to be done by the GM after the season’s trade deadline?

Yeah at that point your roster is set. I think I might be moving May ahead of Brad on my wish list, though. I just don’t like the way we have to beg and plead with him to take the job. I want someone who wants the job. I don’t think that’s Brad. If it was, he’s had plenty of chances to take it. He not only didn’t take this job, he also left the coaching job he did have for a front office role. Give me a grinder and let’s roll.

I’ll be thrilled with either.  I think they’d both kill it here.

Yes. Obviously. Anything could happen. People have free will, situations could change. There’s no guarantees in life. But I believe what I’ve been told. I know the facts about what has been done and we’re preparing to do are in place right now. And if it does happen to go a different way unexpectedly, I’m very confident and happy with our “miss” scenario. This is much different than ‘21 replacing Archie. Coaches were looking at IU and saying I’ve got to go in there and be successful with those players, and even recruit some of them to come back - and I need to be competitive year one and two. NIL wasn’t in play yet. Flipping a roster wasn’t a thing like it is now. A coach now says, I’ve got more resources than almost every team in the country and will be able to get whoever I need to fit my system. And I get to be a hero for one of the most storied programs you could choose from. We had to scramble last time and heard “no” more than thrice. This week we’ve got major names in coaching reaching out to express interest. So yes. Objectively, we might get another kick in the dick. But I feel good right now we have our guy. We can’t miss this time. I myself am excited. All is good.

Thanks

If we do miss, do you think May is next, and if so, do you believe he’d take it?

It’s not about as much as he built a legitimate contender and to see it through. Has a GM ever left under these circumstances? Seems like Stevens and the Celtics have been a match made in heaven.
