Would Duke hire Christian Laetner?

I bet that the next coach at Duke is a former Duke player and assistant coach.  Also Laetner has never been in coaching so that is not a good example

He took way more risks... for every Vic or Will he would drag in 3 or 4 Tijan Jobes, Grant Gelons, Jeremiah Aprils, Peter Jurkins, Bawa Munirus, etc...

Wouldn't have had to do that if it weren't for Trey Lyles, Devon Davis, Emmit Holt, Luke Fischer, Hanner Perea, Jeremy Hollowell all not working out.

If memory serves, Painter was Bruce Webber's assistant at Southern Illinois. When Webber left for Champaign, Painter took over. He was there for one season -- a very good one. At the same time, PU under Keady was really declining. People wanted him gone, but didn't want to force the iconic coach out -- then started worrying Painter would get snatched up by another P5 school based on his success at SIU. So the PUs hired him as "associate head coach" under Keady for a season, then he took over. ... That differs from IU in that the longtime coach already was in place. It might be odd to hire your head coach and head coach-in waiting at the same time -- if people are thinking about a Beilein-Fife or Beilein-Lewis combo.

I'd be quite surprised if a coach--especially one as accomplished as Beilein--would agree to entering into a situation where the university/AD, not Beilein himself, chose one or more of the Assistant coaches. That's just not how these things typically work.

If Dolson suggested it, and Beilein agreed, then maybe it could take place. But that's the only realistic way IMO it could happen.

The more time goes by, the bigger of a rebuilding job IU will appear to be with how many of our guys are in the transfer portal.

This could rival the mess Tom Crean inherited in 2008, minus the sanctions and character problems.

Nah. Nobody is "gone" yet.

And the situation was very different with players leaving or given their walking papers when Crean came.

And if it does become a complete rebuild, it's probably the best year ever to rebuild via the portal.

Even if we lose some f these players there will be plenty of players in the portal to get

Or Patrick Ewing and Penny Hardaway.

And they didn't have to learn on the job at a school with massive expectations in an absolute meatgrinder of a conference.

IU is a hell of a place to "learn as you go".

Can we take anything away from all of these guys entering the transfer portal (Geronimo just entered). I know Dolson is talking to them prior to entering. If we were close to having a coach in place, wouldn't Dolson say, "Just wait a day or two and give the coach a chance before you enter".

To me, it's concerning that players are entering the portal at different times. They are getting told by their AAU coaches, friends, family that you should explore your market for free.

One they see greener grass.. it's hard to turn away pending our hire.

At least we know the boys were faithful to Archie!
