General Coach Candidate News

It was an assistant, not Drew. Also, are the same people running that AAU program? All of those kids and parents are gone. He seems to have recruited quite well since then, hasn’t seemed to hurt one bit.

I would take his recruiting and coaching any day

When was the last time he recruited anyone from the midwest

Dolson better figure out a way to explain to the fanbase why he ignored an interested home run candidate to hire underwhelming IU guy instead. “His assistant was mean to Hanner Perea 10 years ago” ain’t gonna cut it.

IU basketball. Getting in its own way since 2000.

Well when a coach, AD, or GM at any level starts listening to fans they usually end up sitting with the fans. So I don’t think he cares. Wait until a hire is actually made.

"Hi Scott, this is Indiana Elite calling, nice hire you made there in Drew.  So just letting you know that I will be letting every single player that is in my program know what this guy did to Perea and what kind of snake he is.  Additionally, I will do everything in my power to keep him away from my kids.  He has shown me in the past that he doesn't have their best interests at heart."

That is a bit over the top but you better believe that there is a grudge there and having Indiana Elite steering the best players from this state to another program would make this job more difficult then it should be.  Look what happened to Crean when he lost the support of the Indiana coaches.  The recruiting dried up.

Now we can build a roster off of guys outside of Indiana, but that is much, much more difficult then having a home base to fall back on.

I’ll save you a seat in the Woodshed next season. We shouldn’t have any trouble getting a good view. I know you don’t like Drew, but would you rather have whatever IU guy Dolson pulls out of a hat?

I just looked it up. Last time Scott made it past the Sweet 16 -- I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL! I'm an old fart now.

I rather have Dane Fife from out of a hat. At least Fife has potential.

Glad you brought that up. Indiana Elite is still ran by the same people and they don’t like Drew either. That’s a bigger problem than even Dolson not liking him. Those same guys that run Indiana Elite or have roles with them are also at prominent high schools around the state too. I hope you see the problem with that.

We’ve had good relationships with Indy Elite for the past five years and look how that has gone for us. Drew is getting top 50 guys to come to Waco Texas. He would do just fine recruiting here.

Personally I believe we have the inside scoop on the Easter Bunny... He will be in town here soon...

You make a good point, but I still think Santa Claus is a better hire. I know he's old, but he'd bring along Rudolph as an assistant to guide the sleig...I mean team when he retires.

If you take Dolson at his word from the press conference, he wants someone innovative with his pulse on where the game is going offensively, and a modern style that appeals to recruits.

To me, that means Stevens, Oats, Drew, or Beilein, and maybe Musselman. Not Beard, not Matta, not Moser.

Edit: Enfield might fit too, but would generally be a bad idea for other  reasons (mediocre track record, lack of Midwest connections, ties to the FBI scandal, etc.).

It doesn’t take a genius to know that it’s a bad idea to hire a 63 year old coach with no college coaching experience and mediocre NBA head coaching results when you’re on a 5 year tournament drought and fan apathy is the highest it’s been in decades. If Mike Woodson is a serious candidate but Scott Drew isn’t then maybe Dolson should be sitting with the fans.

He’s not going to. If it was Woodson he would’ve already been hired.

Possibly.  You are knowingly hiring a guy with one arm tied behind his back when you hire him though.  That is a handicap that no one else on the wish list has.  He might be able to recruit other areas to make up for that but for him it becomes, "I must recruit those other areas" where as to everyone else it is, "I have an option to recruit those other areas."

And I am totally open to casting a wider net, it feels like some of the Indiana kids are coming in with a sense of entitlement that they have not earned (that is my impression, so don't kill me).  However, I would like to still have an option to get them without having their high school and AAU coaches being a negative factor.  Drew will make that the case.

The lack of “leaks” regarding Beard makes me think he is being keyed in on- much like the lack of talk on Archie last time.

You missed the news this morning.  The Stevens hype train revved back up this morning (I kid).

It's almost impossible to get a coach to leave a place where he's happy and winning unless it's a mid-major guy moving up the ladder. I think Oats would crush it at IU, but he has a good situation at Alabama. And I don't think IU will go after a mid-major guy after getting burned by Archie. Dolson did not have a guy lined up because that rarely happens even at schools that have tradition and rich alumni....see recent coaching hires at other places like Texas football. My guess is a former player and announced today or tomorrow.

Thanks for that SUNNY!
