I don't understand those who are preaching tempo and wanting guys like Oats because of their offensive style.  Alabama was in or near the top 10 in tempo, but they only scored a few ppg more than Michigan.

Would anyone be disappointed with a Michigan style offense?  They ranked 259th in temp this year.  Guess who ranked 206th, a full 53 spots ahead of them?  That's right, Archie Miller's Hoosiers.  They felt so much slower because they were so inefficient.

RMK's teams were near the top of the B1G in scoring because of efficiency, not tempo.  Efficiency is what matters.

Bennett's teams are slow but at least they are modern in terms of shot selection. They ran a lot of 5 out offenses this year. They are consistently great shooting teams and take a high percentage of theirs shots from three which is a big difference from Archie. I think there's a reason that Bennett has been able to have top 20 offensive efficiency teams the last 5 years.

The style of play stuff always amazes me.  I could care less about style of play.  I care about Ws.  Play any style you want but get Ws.  Playing hard.  Make adjustments.  Have a good relationship with players.  Those things are way more important that a style of offense.

Basketball is entertainment. I want to win, but I also want to enjoy watching us win. 50-47 slugfests are not something I enjoy watching. If it's what I have to do to watch IU win then ok, but it wouldn't be my #1 choice.

What candidate would get Lander excited enough to Tweet that? That's where my mind is at. Then again, he agreed to play for Archie so :/

Lander was most definitely a Michigan fan growing up. It was always thought that he would go to Michigan if not IU.

Beilein was the coach of those Michigan teams that Lander watched growing up. just sayin

I'm not delusional and I don't want Bennett. It's just personal preference. I look at basketball as entertainment and his style to me is not entertaining. Is he a good coach? Absolutely, I just don't like watching his teams play.

That's fair.  I think the guy would win a whole bunch here, where I think he would start to lose people is if the inexplicable early round tournament losses continue to be a thing.  Losing to a 16 seed as a 1.  They went out early again this year.

It just seems to me that the Bennett/Miller defense is really susceptible to getting killed by teams that can shoot the 3 because you are worried about stopping the other team's 6'8" center from scoring in the paint.

I think that and boring basketball would be the potential downside to Bennett.  On the upside, there would be a whole lot more winning than we have seen around here for most of the last 20 years.

I'd be thrilled with his results but I'd be lying if I said that I'd find his style aesthetically pleasing. Even when we won under Archie's style the games were painful to watch a lot of the time. But, I just want to win and win a lot, so I'd be happy to have Bennett.

I get it, it's not a run and gun offense like we would love to see. Who wouldn't want that?

But, I'm like you, I just want to see this program as a consistently successful. I want to see this program in the top tier of the big ten and competing for National Titles. Heck, I'd like to see us compete for a Big Ten Tournament Championship. That would be a nice step.

Ehh.. I suppose. We won a lot of games under Archie that I did not find entertaining at all. Tom Crean, for all his faults, put out an entertaining product. His teams were a lot of fun to watch. Beggars can't be choosers though, so if I have to watch boring basketball to watch IU win then I will do it, and if we win enough I won't be complaining.

I'd love Bennett, style of play means didly as long as you win.

Exactly! I don’t like the style and it can cause a few letdowns, but I could live with his results!!! I will take a more boring style if that means a lot of wins and a title once every 10 years!

There's no way it's Beilein or Matta.  Both could easily be the next Coach Hep although thankfully their issues aren't life threatening.

It would be disappointing going down the list to numbers 4-7 for most folks here. After all, this is Indiana..right?

I wouldn't mind John. I think he gets us back to winning the quickest. I have no idea how Matta would perform after taking four years off from working.

Maybe we're looking at this in totally the wrong way.  Maybe we should be trying to hire Sister Jean.  Prayer might be our only answer.

IMO many of you will be sorely disappointed when we don't hire a high profile name and even if we do, many will still be disappointed because we can't even come up with a consensus of who we want on btb.  My $.02

  • Money is important but it's not the sole motivator.
  • Our history of firing coaches doesn't project a good image.
  • If our Compliance Dept. is truly a problem then that alone will turn off some candidates.

I think everyone needs to temper their expectations.

Anyone could “be the next Hep”. Cancer is a ***** and doesn’t discriminate

Of course.  But Beilein and Matta are way to high of a risk.  Beilein looks and sounds 10 years older than he is and he's 68.  Plus he's never won quickly.  It would take several years if ever at all.
