I'll never understand the McDermott love.  Was a complete disaster at ISU.  Hed be 61 to start the season and is a very big dude.  Looks like a massive coronary waiting to happen.  We can do a lot better.

I once said that @Josh hates everyone. Now I’m thinking @Kentuckysucks hates everyone too. At least IU coaching candidates

Completely understand the hesitation and share in some of it, for sure.
I'd just be excited to have IU hire a real basketball coach. For his lack of experience at high major recruiting, I think he'd make up for it in short-term with probably being our best coach in terms of identifying talent for his system and team building since Sampson.
I just want a winner, a smart coach, a culture builder, etc. There's definitely concerns around McCollum, but I want IU to get back to having the toughest guys. Get back to having the smartest coach in most match-ups, etc., etc., and i think McCollum has a chance to be one of those guys.

Yeah, Woodson was so hard headed. He was doing things clearly wrong even I identified in year 1. Just basic stuff, lineup related. Analytic related. If we want to be top tier like Alabama, Duke, Etc, etc, etc you gotta have the talent and the coach. Painter is an incredible coach. Knows the Xs and Os with the best. He still gets great players. But he’s capped. He lucked into Edey being generationally elite. But he can’t recruit that level. If he did, he’d be top 10 every year. So, I want the XO guy for sure, but I want to still have a chance at top talent.

Not likely but we sure had a bunch of crazy theories on here.

1. Dolson has his guy. 9 years and 90 million.
2. Dolson has 1a and 1b but won't ever get past 1b.
3. May has a small buyout so he can leave and take the indiana job. Also a clause in his contract.
4. Cronin is not happy with his nil situation. Wants a change

There are more but that's just off the top of my head

As great as McCollum might be is he immediately going to learn the Nil landscape and how to operate at the top level with agents and such.

He’d have to build a full roster in 6 weeks in the portal at a level he doesn’t have a clue about.

I guess Kelsey did a good job with it.

Man, I don’t know. I feel like we will have to reset our recruiting ideals.

Maybe that’s good. I don’t see agents and 5 stars looking to follow that until he proves himself at p5 for a couple years.

I hope Indiana is thinking this through. We are gonna have to recruit against the big dogs.

If you haven’t watched Drake, I suggest you do. Watch how hard they play defense and how all five guys go after boards every possession. That’s the type of guys he recruits. Weren’t we complaining all year about going after mercenaries every year?

Agree! My hope is that IU's NIL, and maybe a newly hired GM, helps with the talent part early on if there is any adjustment period on that front for McCollum.

Painter doesn't have the money or history that an IU would bring. It may be lightening in a bottle, but since you mentioned Alabama I don't think Oats had much experience on these fronts before getting to Bama (i could be wrong, don't know a ton about his history).

I guess I'm willing to gamble on IU's NIL to carry recruiting for a potentially great culture and team builder, and X's/O's guy.

I rather look at reality over random Internet rumors

I wonder about McC's ability to go into living rooms or a Montverde (purely an example) and recruit high 4 and 5-star talent.  But it's not like Mike Woodson was a champion recruiter.  If it is to be McC, then who be puts on his staff and their recruiting connections will be very critical IMO.

That’s because Woodson and staff lacked focus and intensity with both coaching and recruiting. Find the talented kids that are in it for the right reasons to begin with then coach them hard.

Alabama, Auburn, Duke, and much of the SEC plays really hard. With top talent.

He’s probably gonna go to Iowa and recruit to his style and do really well. But that’s Fran. He’s a good-great coach who has to compete at the top level with good not great talent. All state guys. But he’s still handicapped against the best talent. It is what it is.

A truly competent individual in a GM position should be a real plus for any mid-major coach stepping up into the big leagues.
