You never know who will end up getting a lot of run.
Calbert Cheaney was supposed to be the low man from his class, and played the most minutes from the get go.

After starting on our National Championship team, Rick Calloway and Keith Smart we’re beaten out the next year, as seniors, by freshmen Jay Edwards and Lyndon Jones.

It’s unlikely, but you ever know.

Rick Calloway transferred out after, I believe, his sophomore year to Kansas. However, as a Senior Lyndon Jones lost his starting spot.

I just checked. Callaway had one more year at Indiana after the championship year, his junior year.

Then he played his senior year only at Kansas.

Keith Smart started in the year after the championship year, played exactly the same minutes as the year before (26 minutes per game) and averaged 13.2 points a game, 2 points a game more than the year before. Smart then played 9 years in the NBA. Ricky Callaway also started most games the year after the championship averaging 11.8 points and playing 29 minutes a game.

Smart started in 31 out of 34 in the championship year, and 21 out of 29 the next year; was largely replaced in the starting lineup during the B1G season.

Calloway started 27 out 29 each of his first two years at IU, including the championship year. He started 19 out of 26 the following year at IU, and was largely replaced in the starting lineup during the B1G season.

Knight sometimes started three guards that year. A college player doesn't average 13 points a game if he has been replaced by a freshman. During the 1987-88 season Dean Garrett averaged 16 points a game, Jay Edwards averaged 15 points a game and Keith Smart averaged 13 points a game (up 2 points from the year before). Ricky Callaway averaged 11 points a game. Lyndon Jones average under 5 points a game. Garrett, Edwards, Smart and Callaway started the most games, played the most in those games, and scored the most points. Your statement is contrary to fact.
