  2. Again, I'm with you on your Harris stance, but we're never going to agree on Dorn. He was bad last season. Honestly, I would have taken Jasai Miles back in that spot before Dorn. At least Miles can defend and rebound his position, and then the staff could have had him making 300-500 spot-up 3s a day in the off-season to try and get him serviceable as a shooter. Much easier to improve a players shooting.

  3. I'm not really backing Harris in some big way here, I have no idea if he'll make a leap with more playing time at IU. He could be really good, he could be really bad. It's a risk the staff is taking. My thing in this discussion is that we know Dorn is bad. Yeah, he had a few games where he got hot from 3 and no disputing his shooting was key to those big wins. But, he was basically terrible at everything else, and outside that hot shooting streak he was basically average at best at his one skill. He's a terrible defender (9th in defensive rating out of our 9 rotation guys) and a very limited offensive player. I have no issue with questioning whether we should have tried to spend Harris' NIL money elsewhere. Can completely buy that line of thinking. But the idea we should have kept Dorn instead, and especially as a starter. I can't get onboard with that. Dorn was bad last season.

  5. Exactly how I’ve seen it. Needed a playable 4/5 and another combo guard that can play. Move Karvala, Manhertz, Sokolov to 11,12,13.

Welcome to Shonda Stanton ball. Pitching would be a nice bonus to make even more noise going forward. However, IU has been an elite offense for years now with mediocre pitching and still plows into a regional every year so def don't 'need' it to get back, but more to contend to win one. However, how about appreciating a program that did very little for years being a postseason team now yearly. It would be great to break through and maybe win one but what coach has built is something to applaud. Its not something to criticize when a culture is built on a strong team bond with elite offenses and power that often requires winning shootouts. It works and wins 40+ games a year and gets to postseason always. Great pitching needs to be treated as a bonus. Not a baseline that is on the verge of imploding when its clearly not.

  7. I’ve read he peaked very early in high school and was way ahead of everybody. Duke had a starting guard get hurt for a significant stretch this season and he didn’t see an uptick in minutes. Think he had a great relationship with Kenny Johnson more than anything else.

  8. She may have kind of a point. Sure, they’ll revere his name, but after 5 years with the Raiders and he’s gone the full Ken Stabler with the the shoulder length hair, the beard, the Marlboro filterless hanging perpetually from his lip, the beer can surgically attached to his hand and barely able to function after the previous night’s debauchery will they actually recognize him?

  9. I do think it’s relevant, whether HS or portal transfers good players want to go to winning programs. Teams like Duke et al sell themselves. Teams like UM have the last 2 decades of high level success. A blip of 2 years doesn’t change that. IU has been bad for a decade, there is no luster to the program, and when you’re rebuilding the entire roster and players have no idea who they’d be playing with if the join, then looking at a school that hasn’t won jack in a decade vs a winning program absolutely makes a difference. For me this is the test year for DeVries and his staff. They’re still somewhat in the same boat because they’re rebuilding again based on the way DeVries built from portal last year and we missed the tourney, but there were a number of good W’s and now he has size and better athleticism needed to win more consistently in the B1G. I just have a longer outlook than you guys, doesn’t mean I’m patient or happy with where we are, couldn’t be more impatient at this point. But if DeVries does better in conf and gets us into the tournament, then with multiple talented returning players with eligibility I think we’ll see us take off the following season — that’s what I’m banking on anyway

  10. I tend to agree with this. Before the Penn State kick-off last year, a sideline reporter said to Cig, "Indiana has never won here at Beaver Stadium, how does that change today?" Cig: "This team has never played here." G-damn it he's the best. I think should fundamentally apply to IUBB. We've stunk for a long time, but all the people that stunk are pretty much entirely gone. Everyone that had to do with Mike Davis, Sampson's problems, Crean's down years, Archie, and Woody... are gone. I get it's technically not everyone, Scott & Pam were around for Woody (though as we know he was mostly pushed on them) and there are probably some meddling donors in the background that have been around for decades. But in general, all the people who struggled here are gone. And whatever the IU admin is now, it is natty capable. Now, our image isn't great after 30 years of struggles. Fair, that's a headwind, though not an insurmountable one. But another thing that's gone is the era we struggled in, the pre-NIL era. Now we've got ~#15 roster spend last year and ~#7-10 roster spend this year. We've never had this before. This is quite the advantage as we know. So, yes, we've not been good for a long time. And maybe there is something weird in the water in Bloomington that makes us mediocre at MBB. Not sure what that is but it's possible. But overall, this current IUBB program has almost nothing in common with the iterations of our program that struggled. Frankly, while I don't expect CDD to be Cig, I wouldn't mind CDD laying down a marker that the past is the past, this team has nothing to do with it, and things change now. I can kinda buy the excuses for season one... some of them. But this season he's been given everything needed to improve significantly. There is no reason IU can't be a six seed or better and think S16 this year, then build on that for season three and really start thinking big.

  11. Two things can be true: 1. The overall talent level has been significantly upgraded 2. It’s still a horribly constructed roster. The core of this years roster is pretty darn good and if it stays healthy, we should win a fair amount of games. But the bench is a disaster. Zero playable big men and zero primary ball handlers. Our 6th and 7th man are massive question marks as neither have proven a thing and players 8-10 are all true freshman and complete unknowns. While the overall talent level is significantly better, we’re an injury away from potentially being worse than last year.

  14. Complete apples to oranges comparison here, so almost even irrelevant numbers, but Harris' numbers last year at Duke would have ranked him on IU: 1st in DRtg 3rd in ORtg
    2 points
  15. With you on what could have been done with Harris' money if you're saying Dorn is kept as our 9th-10th guy (which would be 4th or 5th guard). Just not as a starter or 6th man playing 20+ mpg.
    2 points
  16. We don't but one can make an educated guess based on a few things, considering that it's more expensive to acquire talent in the portal than retain it, the market went up again this cycle even compared to last cycle, Dorn is probably deeper on the bench for Miami than Harris is for IU, and (I could be mistaken) we locked up Harris before he went on his UVA visit, so the number must've been good enough that the trip was no longer worthwhile

  17. Put Dorn in a competent lineup and those worries aren’t greatly exaggerated. Every team has a guy that shoots 3’s on offense and guards the opposing teams worst perimeter player.

  18. Sorry for pushing this, more just having a slow, relaxing weekend so figured it would be fun to chat on this. With that said, I'd argue that Dorn is so bad that having him playing 20+ minutes per game would significantly lower our ceiling next season. We had 9 rotation guys last season and he ranked 6th or worse per 100 possessions in nearly every category except for 3pt shooting and turnovers (mainly because he doesn't handle at all). He was our worst defender and second worst rebounder (slightly better than Enright). I don't see how one of our worst players last season would help next year's team as a starter (or 6th man) playing 20+ minutes. Like I said, fully agree with being skeptical of Harris and wondering what else we could have done with that money. I'm with you there. Just can't understand advocating for Dorn as part of that.

  19. He was pretty terrible expect for 3 games, you're right. Surprised to see any discussion about him at all. Can't dribble, pass, defend, or rebound.
    2 points
  20. You can hide Dorn in a lineup that features Sherrell and Samet in the front court as they offer rebounding and rim protection that didn’t exist last year with DeVries and Bailey/Alexis.

  23. I have not seen anybody not acknowledge that this team is significantly better than last year, which is good, and we had to have it. Do some guys just want to nitpick and criticize? Maybe. Are some reflexively defensive? Maybe. Most likely we all are just posting opinions in good faith and differ on how we view some things. As you acknowledge, it's not like the roster is ironclad perfect, so of course there will be offseason message board fodder about personnel, budget, etc.
    2 points
  24. Yeah, I'm with you on what maybe else could have been done with that money. Split between two other guys, etc.? Just not with you on Dorn. Dorn was pretty bad last year. We don't know what Harris will be, completely agree there, but I can't imagine him being worse than Dorn outside of that 3-4 game heater.

  25. Women's season came to an end last evening in a 9-7 loss to Virginia. But it's been a really enjoyable several months to follow this team. Hess started but couldn't make it out of the 1st inning. Faced 4 batters - a BB, a double, a HR and VA had a quick 3-0 lead. We got 3 of our own in our half the 1st; 2 on a Josie Bird HR. VA scored 4 in its 3rd; we got 3 right back in our 3rd and tied it at 4 apiece after 7 complete. But VA scored 2 more in the 5th and that was the ball game. VA had a total of 10 hits and we walked 6. We had 7 hits; Bird with 2 and Bird and Haberstroh each with 2 RBI.\ Thank you IU Softball and we'll see you next spring.

  26. I would bank that Harris will have a better year just for the reason that indiana has a much better PF, C combo than they had last year, which is going to open up the floor. In theory anyways

Raby indicates he thought an offer was extended to Grivna last summer at a team camp, but in any event, the staff made it clear this weekend that he does indeed have an IU offer. He attends Louisville Ballard HS and play AAU on the 3SSB circuit for Wildcat Select. We had at least 1 staff member at every one of this past weekend's 4 games. 35. Because he ended up at Miami where he’s their 4th or 5th guard.
    1 point
  36. What other things does he provide? He was 6th out of 9 rotation players in offensive rating, 8 out of 9 in rebounding per 100 possessions and 9th in defensive rating. He does almost nothing beyond streaky spot-up shooting (34% outside of that 3 game stretch). He's an awful defender.

  37. Miles ended up at Loyola Marymount and Dorn joined a preseason top 25 team. Dorn provides something next years team lacks (along with other things) and that’s perimeter shooting.
    1 point
  38. And we shall see if Harris is any better at those things than Dorn. Or Jasai Miles for that matter. Hopefully the staff knew what they were doing this time. Then we will all be happy.
    1 point
  39. Dorn is “bad” strictly if you look at him as scoring option #2 or #3. As a mid 6 figures player averaging 8 and shooting 38% from 3 on volume in the 5th starter/6th man role…he’s a bargain. What’s the consensus on Harris going to be when he averages 8 ppg in ~22 min shooting 35% from 3 on less volume than Dorn? A waste of money.
    1 point
  40. Harris may ultimately prove to be the “better” overall player than Dorn, probably incrementally, but who cares? It’s about at what cost? You can’t tell me with a straight face that Harris and Dorn are commanding the same amount of money. We told Dorn to take a pay cut for a lesser role to acquire Harris, that’s pretty obvious. Did we sacrifice depth reaching for Harris and to an extent Mustaf? Time will tell, but we’re an injury away from being awful once again. Staff can’t afford that this year.
    1 point
  41. Jai Lucas must have seen something about Dorn that he thought he could work with. He saw Duke plenty too. Dorn and Harris are pretty much both athletically limited with one primary skillset of shooting. Dorn is more proven than Harris at that skill. Maybe he can show more with more PT though
    1 point
  42. Are they better than Cam Boozer and Patrick Ngongba? Because that's who Harris played with when he shot 33% from 3 in 9.7mpg last year.

  43. It seems that Alabama’s Preston Murphy and Texas Tech’s Achoki Moikobu, both of whom had previously worked with DeVries, may have taken a long time to decide they weren’t interested in joining his staff. That hesitation hurt us last year. However, pivoting to Kenny Johnson may ultimately prove to be a blessing in disguise.
