In fairness, Hill wasn't a 'yes man'; that'd require being conscious.

  4. Curry Hicks Sage’s Burning Sage podcast had a two hour interview with Crean. He was pretty open about his side. He also said he was not told how bad the situation was when he signed the contract and that had he known everything he’s not sure he would’ve done it. He talked about the 30 failed drug tests and 18 failing grades. But he said the IU fan base was and is incredible and kept him in it. He also suggested that the Syracuse NCAAT game left some insiders looking for ways to get him out. He feels he lost administrative support pretty quickly and most obviously when after winning the Big 10 outright in 2016–second time in four years—and IU was not willing to engage in contract extension discussions. He said he should’ve started looking for other jobs and it was clear his time at IU was up but he felt attached to the OG and TB team. It was a fascinating chat and pretty clear how Crean sees his time went down. Obviously it’s his perspective and I’m sure many on the board have countering opinions or rumors.

Perhaps Fife is out of coaching partially because of how he has acted since being let go. Perhaps his brain was broken by what he saw behind closed doors and he's lashing out because he has been semi traumatized ever since. Lol The simple fact is, with very few notable exceptions (TJD, JHS, Ware), everything that Mike Woodson touched as IUBB HC turned to ****. Thankfully he is no longer here and our basketball program is better off because of that. I'm happy to look ahead and not behind, so we can start acting like the last 4 years never happened... except for the occasional joke about the fellas lounge, golfing, and ordering pizza instead of handling responsibilities. LoL

Really no surprise here. Woodson was definitely the poster child for ineptness and laziness and always surrounded himself with "yes" men. He had no stomach for being challenged as "the smartest man in the room". And he was really good at smoking cigars, drinking wine and cashing checks.

  8. What a train wreck she has been and allowing the Governor to remove the voice of the people to the Trustees and bring politics into it has been. Wipe it all clean and make it about academics and self governance instead of the politics that have tyrannically taken over our University

I am a Fife "fan" but at this point, what is the point (hence why he deleted his post too). Woody's obvious flaws caught up with him. He made out with a nice payday though. It is interesting to hear the stories from both sides. Woody's issues were fairly obvious, but Fife seems to have done some weird stuff too.

  13. Since Gov. Braun has been running things there have been some major changes regarding his power. He's able to remove and appoint IU Board of Trustees members. So far he's replaced 6 trustees with 6 conservatives. He's also been on record saying he wished IU is better aligned with what the school up north (lost to IUFB 66-0) was doing. Braun is a school up north (lost to IUFB 66-0) grad. He's got a lot of power at the moment. Just google "braun iu trustees" if you want to learn a little more about the current state of things. Just a friendly reminder, IUFB, 66-0.

  14. I hope you're right. IUFB has never had this much support from the very top. She's a pioneer in that way and so far is an integral part to the equation of success.

  24. I’ve heard Crean say the “it was worse than I thought” stuff more than once and if you remember back there were times in real time both on and off court when he had this “what the hell am I doing” look, so I’m sure he genuinely believes it. But I doubt that’s really true. I just think if you were one of those guys with the ego and ambition to really want one of the heritage jobs, and Crean was definitely that guy, IU was probably the only 1 of those gigs that looked like it was gonna come open any time soon. So I imagine he let the opportunity cloud the situation in a way he probably wouldn’t have if it was, ya know, say, the Wisconsin job.

  28. Which is big boy basketball recruiting, getting players that fit your system where you can find them. Sisley looks to fit what he does perfectly, and he happens to be down the road from me in Santa Claus. If CDD can just try to get the home grown guys, he will be fine as long as he wins. There were people that wanted Crean out for a while, and they gave him the boot at the first chance they got. Anyway, I am so ready to start the season, but I don't want the cold weather that goes along with it.

I remember the first rumor of Mike Woodson being hired as the head coach, I knew right away it would be a huge mistake for the basketball program. Here we are, six wasted years and a huge buy-out paid out. Woodson couldn’t land an NBA head job with his enormous wealth of NBA assistant experience. In fact, he was out of the league for a couple season in 2018. The hire was a panic move and to appease the older fan base. There is a fresh air in the basketball offices now, even down to the athletic trainer and strength coach. Darian has the resources to succeed, I’m anticipating Darian having a great career at Indiana than Woodson did as a coach. Happy retirement Coach Woodson, enjoy Sacramento and the NBA life again!

  37. Thanks. There has been so much drama with MBB over the years that the behind the scenes viewpoints are very interesting I've got to say. The above bolded lines sure sound like old IU -- an organizational disaster with political infighting that isn't aligned and produces crap results. Fortunately, it appears our AD is now in control with outside influences (who are almost never helpful) much more minimized. Plus he has the President's support, and very likely the BoT as well. We saw this with the last MBB coach search where basically only Scott knew who he was going to hire, along with the significant and unprecedented investment in football. IU athletics is looking functional for the first time in decades -- thank goodness. And yes, we do have to hope Scott got the hire right, but the key takeaway is he made the decision. So if things go wrong, we know who is to blame and who may need to be changed out. Though to be clear, I think Scott is doing a good to very good job. I'm also really hoping we don't have a MBB or FB coaching search for 10+ years. I've had enough of those for a lifetime already.

  42. Just because it’s fun to extrapolate from small data sets: 29 attempts from 3 per game would put us in the top 10-20 teams in the nation in 3’s per game. ~29% from 3 would put us in the bottom 10-20 teams in the nation in 3pt %. For reference, Central Arkansas shot similar splits last year from 3 and were the 349th most efficient team in the country…lol. We’ll need to make more to be a top 20 offense. But in fairness, had Wilkerson not had a really off game one time and Devries shot better, those numbers probably look more like we want. We also got to the line 20+ times a game, converted 46% of our FG’s, and had 71assists over 3 games, so I am sure our overall efficiency was better than our 3pt percentage indicates. For reference, teams like Duke, Florida, and Alabama that shot high volumes of 3’s last year hit around 35-39% of their 3’s. Also, nobody averaged over 20 assists a game last year. I would suspect that if this team can get that 3pt% into the above range playing that style they have a shot at the top 20 offense some have mentioned. But then again we’re talking Puerto Rico basketball in August, so….

  43. Or that was as good as that team was going to get and it was down hill from then on because Woody sucks at coaching! That game was a fight and tempers were flaring if you remember. Full house in Knoxville too.

  44. I'm glad we won, and I'm even more glad the guys got a chance to bond and develop chemistry. But exhibitions don't mean jack. Last year I watched us beat Tennessee in Knoxville, in the most real game-like exhibition I can think of. And then the season started and Tennessee won 30 games, and we sucked. We won't know anything about this team until the real games start.

  45. Mullins? I can speculate with 99% certainty: He is playing for one of the great coaches in the nation. He is getting paid at least $500,000. At age 18. To play basketball. He is learning a ton about how to be a better basketball player, and welcomes the adjustment. He is pretty psyched that freshmen are about to move in, especially the lovely ladies. He is in an idyllic part of the country to be in, especially from May- September. In summary... he is having an unimaginably incredible time! *footnote: If he had committed to IU and Woody was dumped for Devries, pretty much all of these things would also be true, though we would not have landed Lamar Wilkerson as our SG. In other words? It all worked out really well for Mullins, for UConn, and for IUBB.

  48. Get him in the weight room. Teach him how to run. Explosion drills. He has the basketball acumen but right now he would have no chance in the Big Ten. In the post, he reminds me of Angel Reese except he makes shots. He needs time and coaching. 2-3 years....patience with this one.
