Things that make me smile: "Bates is a shot maker, the most essential tool in today’s game and Bates has it in spades. He played a vital role on this season’s IMG team as the best perimeter shooter, but also their best perimeter defender," Rivals' national analyst Jamie Shaw said. "It may be easy to pigeonhole Bates into the 3 & D moniker, and that is not a bad thing, but he has a little more shake to his game than that. Bates is good in transition and can knock down a 1-2 dribble pull up, but make no mistakes his offensive game is predicated on his deep range."5 points -

IIRC, he transferred/moved into Blackford? From Brownsburg maybe? That's not accurate. He transferred moved into Blackford as a freshman. He was never enrolled at Brownsburg and was never going to go there. I don't count anything that happens in AAU because people move teams every time the wind blows for all kinds of reasons. He's quit on 1 team and who knows the real details on that. People just like to find ways to take shots at the kid for some dumb reason.3 points -

Spot on! Phillips Exeter! Vandy on a full ride! Geez HH, that kid is just. a. little. impressive! My daughter went to high school at American Heritage in Delray Florida on a theater/music/academic 75% off ride. Would have been $50k otherwise. When she got there, we discovered that the 90%+ of kids were there without a scholarship and paying full freight--mainly very wealthy families that wanted to say that their kid graduated from a private high school with Ivy league and D1 sports destinations. As with HH, my daughter is now on a more than 50% college ride for musical theater at Boston Conservatory. And the school can say to wealthy parents "look ... another of our kids got somewhere good." IMG is a little different because they are sports-centered only, but methinks it is supported by the wealthy golf, lacrosse, etc families who pay full freight. My son sings classical--a very small and hard to find skill for universities. Every single member of his freshman incoming class got at least 50% off college tuition, and he had four our five offers like that (sadly, including one he turned down from IU). Basketball is likely the small, niche program at IMG where every single kid gets an all but free ride and helps with the school's resume.1 point

Hoosiers Host Iowa on Big Ten Network Thursday Story Links MATCH NOTES Hoosiers Host Iowa on Big Ten Network Thursday BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's soccer team (6-2-1) will host Iowa in a nationally televised match on the Big Ten Network on Thursday Sept. 23 at 8:00 p.m. ET. SCOUTING THE HAWKEYES Iowa comes in with a record of 7-1-1 on the season with their only defeat on the road at Kansas. The Hawkeyes won their Big Ten opener last week at home 2-1 against Northwestern. In the shortened spring season of 2021 Iowa won their program's first ever Big Ten Tournament Championship, defeating Wisconsin in the final. Iowa beat Campbell in the first round of the NCAA tournament before dropping a match to UCLA. The Hawkeyes finished that season with an overall record of 7-9-1. Last season the Hoosiers beat Iowa 2-0 in Bloomington. WEBBER, GERSTENBERG EARN BIG TEN HONORS Paige Webber earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Jamie Gerstenberg earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Sept. 14. Webber got a hat trick against Murray State and added an assist in the Hoosiers win at Kansas State. Gerstenberg has three straight shutouts and six shutouts on the season. OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION Against Southeast Missouri State on Sunday the Hoosiers scored six goals, their most in a match since the 2011 season. All six goals came in the first half of the match, which set a program record for goals in a half. Six different players scored the six goals for the Hoosiers. Previously the Hoosiers were 0-11 all-time against Notre Dame. 2021 SPRING SEASON The 2021 spring season was historic for the Hoosiers. Indiana tied a program record for Big Ten wins and established a new school record for Big Ten points in a season with 19. On March 2, the Hoosiers were ranked in the top-25 for the first time since 2013.1 point -
That's how I look at it, too. Overall, a weaker non-conference schedule than many years since the top teams aren't as strong but more balanced since the weakest teams aren't as weak. I think it's a good schedule for a team that hasn't been to the NCAA in years since it's a chance to get wins while also allowing for the adjustment process that will be needed considering the roster turnover and a new coaching staff including a head coach who has not coached a college game before. By the end of the season the SOS will be fine from conference play.1 point

How long a leash on Penix?
Rico reacted to Hoosierfan2017 for a topic
While the Penix of old was capable of beating top teams because of great play, it remains to be seen whether current Penix can. What we do know is that current Penix is more than capable of being the reason why we lose to a top 10 team. Can Tuttle give us average against a good team? Because average beats Cincinnati on Saturday. We haven’t seen OSU Penix in any other game before or since that game. And really, it was only half of that game. The first half was pedestrian. That game also happened in a completely empty stadium. We’re not going to (hopefully) see that setting ever again. That’s not to minimize that game, as it was an amazing game, but I’m not holding out hope that we see anything close to that from him again. The last play of the PSU game is what everyone remembers, but as a whole it was a very mediocre game from him. 19/36 for 170 yards, 1 td and 1 int. As far as leashes, I vote for no leash at all. Penix should be benched and Tuttle should start on Saturday against WKU. He needs game reps to get prepared for the gauntlet we have coming up. He’s completed 48% of his passes and thrown 6 interceptions against our two BCS opponents this year. 31 completions to our team and 6 completions to the other team. Potential has been the key word with penix. People have seen his strong arm and moments of greatness and thought about his potential for greatness. But at some point that has to actually materialize. Its his fourth season at IU. At this point, more often than not he’s been inconsistent and injury prone. I’m ready to move on, and if history is an indicator at some point we’ll have to because of injury anymore. He’s never played more than six games in a season, and he’s never lasted until the end of one.1 point -
I agree that if you want to beat an OSU, PSU, or someone like that you need Penix to do that. I think Tuttle can manage a win against WKU or Purdue but not sure he can beat a top 25 team. I think that is why you stick with Penix. IU football this season has been like waiting for Christmas to get here, then three presents in so far we've only got socks and underwear.1 point
