If everybody does this wont it just negate the intent?

Exactly. "Mega conferences" are stupid. Let's have 20 teams in the same conference....and then not even play each other.

Here's a great idea, why not have teams that are in the same geographic region play each other regularly? How innovative is that concept?!

We knew conference expansion jumped the shark when West Virginia joined the Big XII....to get it back to 10 teams. West Virginia doesn't even border a state that borders a state in the Big 12. Ridiculous.

I've suggested this scenario several time relative to this discussion:

Use the football divisions... 14 teams in 2 divisions, 7 teams each.

Play each team in your division twice - home and away (12 games)

Play each team in the other division once, alternating home and away each year (7 games)

The two division winners play each other for the league championship, automatic tournament bid and trash the money-grabbing B1G tournament, altogether.

Now you have a 19 game conference schedule and everyone plays a balanced schedule... it really doesn't seem that difficult to me.

Similarly, the NCAA could simply add an additional weekend to the NCAA tournament and include 256 teams... many problems solved...And, yeah, I get it, the 257th team would be pissed to not make the tournament, but who really cares... if you're 257 out of 300+, does it really matter?

These new conference schedulers aren't looking for a balanced schedule, they are looking for, essentially, the top 4 teams to not play the bottom 4 teams and the top 4 teams to all play the top 4 teams.

I'd be fine with an every team makes the tourney format. It used to work perfectly in Indiana, before the 'everyone gets a trophy' crowd showed up.

would really lessen the meaning of the regular season though.

It would destroy the regular season, also the other postseason tourneys should be completely done with at that point.

How about your top 64 (current without play-in) teams host the regional with themselves, and 3 other teams with teams from each tier?

That would give value to the regular season.
