Of course he’s right.

From the coach’s perspective, there is very little down time to the college game. If you’re not practicing/playing, you’re in the recruiting cycle. The whole free agency of the transfer portal and NIL only intensifies the pressure and lengthens cycle. Whereas the professional side does have definite down time in the offseason. They have a full front office staff to handle the “recruiting” - dealing with the draft, free agency, etc. Of course the coach has some level of involvement, but that certainly varies from franchise to franchise.

IMO, apart from hubris, the difference between the required work effort of a college coach and a pro coach was what tripped up one Michael Dean Woodson. HS recruiting was definitely his weak spot, and it showed over and over and over. It would have been much more evident in the era prior to the NIL/transfer portal. But Mr Woodson is gone, and that’s all water under the bridge.

We’ve already seen a number of coaches walk away from the game due, at least in part, to the madness that NIL and the transfer portal have foisted upon us. Looks like Ol’ Dusty is just another victim (though largely speculation on my part, as I’ve not seen any specific comments attributed to Dusty May on the subject).

If the current speculation holds, it looks like UM assistant Mike Boynton will get the interim tag. I’m sure that he can manage the talent currently at Michigan. But as a HC, he was atrocious at Oklahoma State (119–109 overall, 51–75 B-XII) so either Michigan looks for a long term replacement for Dusty after the current season, or Michigan will suffer under Boynton.

There is ZERO doubt that in three years we will be tracking a private plane heading to Bloomington with Dusty, Steven’s and Donovan all on board. What a GREAT head coach assistant combo !!!

Ann Arbor seemingly didn’t care they won a title. My family was on that campus the day after the title game and said you couldn’t tell a championship had been won.

Combine that with the lack of enthusiasm I saw by Michigan fans at the national title game and it’s not hard to see why Dusty left.

Michigan will need to decide if they are serious and care about basketball or program will continue to see extreme swings.

Also for IU fans who wanted Dusty, you have to wonder if being treated like a king in Bloomington rather than an afterthought in Ann Arbor would have kept him around longer or lure of NBA would have been to strong after a couple of years?

If that’s why he left, he’ll be disappointed in Dallas. A big Cowboys free agent signing will garner more interest than a Mavs title run. There will be some nights a HS football game out draws the Mavs.

They’re also a mess. Mostly since Cuban sold but he’s responsible for some too. Their best player plays for the Lakers and second best player just won a title for NY. Hopefully they are giving him some front office say-so.

Although true, in the NBA you get stuck with what the GM gives you.  Unless you have that roster responsibility, which puts you back into the “no downtime” mode.

He didn’t leave because of UM’s lack of enthusiasm (yes, I know it wasn’t you that claimed that) but rather because his goal was to be in the NBA much like Stevens and Donavon.

True but a NBA coach and/or GM isn’t spending countless hours in AAU gyms, renegotiating with the entire roster every single year, “courting/begging” a 15 year old high school player for 2-3 years, etc etc.

At least in the NBA the GM signs a certain percentage of the roster for 2/3/4/5 years as opposed to having an ENTIRE roster that can leave every single year.

$5 says we will not be looking for a new coach in three years.

So much for all the clowns who said Dusty was never coming here because he didn’t want to be in the spotlight or deal with the high pressure type schools. Pretty sure going to coach the Mavericks is the definition of a high pressure situation.

Coaching the Mavericks isn't a pressure cooker job lol. It's in a football town and arguably the 4th most popular franchise in the Megaplex, especially when the Stars are good. The Mavericks were terrible last year and I will assure you nobody was harassing Jason Kidd and his family, let alone sending him death threats.
