It was just a comment about him, not him being connected to IU. I believe he announced he was staying and then a few days later entered the portal so the conclusion there is that he was lured and has a spot in mind. Both from a cash and minutes availability standpoint, it would be very unlikely that spot is IU. At least in my opinion

Sounds like something a UK or a KU might be doing

fwiw, I noticed that Gabe Dynes is portaling again-former Woodson recruit iirc

Torvik has starting posting team roster casts for next year -- obviously a lot of incomplete rosters at this point.  However, you can look at IU's ranking compared to teams last year.  IU's current 10 man roster would have ranked 23rd last season.  Further signings for the remaining spots would move them higher up.

23rd last year.  Curious if it factors in that a lot of our guys should take a leap going into junior year

Torvik accounts for yearly improvement and even slightly adjusts for where the player was ranked when they were a recruit.

The two players it expects to make the greatest efficiency increase are Sherrill and Harris (although Harris minute projection has him coming of the bench).

23rd seems about right to me. I don’t think people should expect a sweet 16 or final four team this year. Make the dance. Develop the team and then in year 3 add the pieces for a run.

Make the dance and...BEAT NORTWESTERN!  I thought that should've been the goal this season, but I'm willing to look past that if we see progress next year.  This program is broken, it won't be fixed in one season.

I could buy into “baby steps” if our roster spend wasn’t one giant leap for IUBB.

We went from around $10M spend to close to $20M, nearly doubling it.  We are probably close to #5 roster spend in the country.

And we brought in a GM and another assistant.

I’m almost certain the internal expectations are second week of the tourney and much more than just beating NW and making the dance.

That said, I don’t see how this program is ready to do more than that.  Maybe in season three if we develop and retain well — then we really have a nice situation to sell in the portal.

Given the huge amount of money spent on the roster, which will be near $20M, we should be thinking Sweet 16.  That's not unreasonable.

Everybody in this program is getting paid a lot, from coaches to players.  Time to earn it and win.

Yep.  I don’t think riot gear comes out if we miss, but that should be the expectation.  If we end up in the top 20 best teams the fanbase will be happy and we can build ALOT as most of our guys have eligibility.

That being said.  We have 3 roster spots to raise our ceiling and we are thinking more about stabilizing our floor.  Besides money being out, which seems likely, this is the wrong move.  I think a backup big that can play, an impact guard/wing or the reverse and then whatever with spot 13 imo.
I think we have questions at 4-6 of the projected top 10.   Add 1 more, more sure thing.  Then a bench, injury reserve guy and I feel better.

I get your point here, and you could be right.

But, I'm not sure we know enough yet.

- Anything around the program's "thinking" is getting pretty presumptive.  None of us really know, including the Rabby's of the world.

- We might be low on money like you said, and that combined with minutes availability may limit our ability to get another obvious "impact" guy

- Let's see who we get.  If the final additions are really gnarly, then I'll jump in the concern boat

I'd guess these last three spots aren't quite what we hope, but at some point this staff is just going to have to prove they had a plan and made it work despite what it looked like on paper.  If they can't do that, we've go a serious issue.  Like with IUFB right now, I'm looking a TE spot and I see six young guys with limited experience.  I'm pretty surprised we didn't pick up a vet TE in the portal, we easily could have.  But, I'm sure the staff knows something I don't.  I'd like to see some of that from the IUBB staff this season -- the old upside surprise that explains something that looked iffy on paper.

I don't know that we did go to $20M, but let's go with that number for this exercise.

I think it's good to keep in mind that pretty much everyone upped their budget this year. Everyone now has revenue sharing. Everyone knows the cost for players went up.

It's really possible that even though we're at or near $20M so are a lot of other top-teir programs.

Additionally, just like the pros having spent a million more here or there doesn't constitute success. If we paid $20M and lost to a team that paid $19M is it that ig of an upset? If we beat a team that paid $21M we're we significant underdogs?

Yes, I read it again that way and was thinking/hoping that the KJ connection was pulling him our way and he then said hmmmm..lol  Maybe I read too much into that. lol
