I am curious who are people you want us to go after in a perfect world. I feel like i generally agree with you but as of right now i haven’t hated any of the rumored names in the right roles

I’ll get back to you as more names enter this weekend. I like to watch video.  If we only need 5 or 6 we need to get the right ones. Can’t fill just to fill. It’s a competition to build the best roster.  Being full or out of money early isn’t ideal either.

I'm going with Kent Sterling on the transfers this year. I will be showing no excitement in any of the transfers, regardless of potential. We've seen too many times folks get excited only to get kicked in the shorts. Personally, I'm still riding the football natty wave, so I'm not sure that I'm terribly attached at the moment anyways

The minute some big school jumps in on Fru and gets him it will be a huge miss for DeVries.  It will be like clockwork on here

It is all about what the Ryan Carr "draft" board looks like.  They'll have their top 3-5 players at each spot.  Hopefully, you at least get at 1 and/or 2 at a couple of spots and maybe a 3-5 at the rest.  So if they got their 1 or 2 top choices at the guards and a 3 at center, they would be starting off pretty good.

Expectations adjusted.  You are misremembering the off-season.  It’s whatever.  I lived it.

The names we are connected to so far will put us in that similar 30-40 range or whatever.

Fru is a backup to me.  Especially on a good team.  You like him better.  That’s fine.  I think with Carr coming over, and Rabjohns and others hinting this one has high odds.  I’ll make a more declarative read once we identify our other 5.

Fru was a starter for a good team last season. Do you really think he's transferring from that situation to go be a backup for a team that missed the tourney? Let's be real about where we are right now.

saw someone post this on another board and it’s crazy asking prices.

says source told him Sananda Fru's asking price is 3-3.5M, and IU doesn't want to pay it.

Mentioned he's heard 4M for Somto Cyril (not IU - related)

His international guy mentioned 5M for Thiam (Cincy) recently too. Edit: Cincy's 247 staff mentioned 4M for Thiam yesterday...

Gross. The market is what the market is. Someone is gonna pay. (I think)Indiana will eventually moneyball itself into a unproven team. We didn’t want to spend on a center last year when we had some real choices and a definite need. The prices are ridiculous, but we need to figure something out.

Freshman and Overseas might be the bargain, for now.

These prices are steep.

Not to be that guy and point out the obvious, but these are asking prices.  I suppose it's not surprising to see opening asks quite high -- negotiating 101.

We'll never know, but while I am sure these guys will get something pretty high, it probably won't be as high as their initial ask.  I've seen quite a few reports over the years about how the actual agreed on number ends up being lower.

Regardless, it ain't my job to figure this out.  We've got a great big expensive staff at IU for that.

I would assume it will probably be cheaper to go overseas and find some big guys

These guys are going to end up screwing themselves and everyone else....eventually someone steps in and puts a cap on this, which should have been done from the beginning!

More likely than a cap?

The reality of (relatively) limited budgets will leave some players that had dreams of millions left out in the cold.

Yeah, the schools that can(eventually) take advantage of this mess, and presumably Carr can give IU a leg up here, are the ones that create some level of roster stability over a period of time to the point that they’re going into the portal with the goal of finding crack fillers rather rather than, ya know, a starting 5. Those guys can wait out the insane early money period and, comparatively, find value propositions after the market cools a bit. They can then use those savings to grow and keep their  own kids, even if you have to overpay them some, and to at least the greatest possible degree create an internal culture piece. That’s basically the MLB model for teams with mid-level revenue streams.

For those that are so inclined, it's a lot like building an auction/salary cap, keeper league fantasy football roster:

  • Identify young players that will develop and retain them.
  • Spend real money on a few key additions.
  • Find bargains after everyone has spent the majority of their budget.

I would be shocked if they got half of this. I know it’s hard to know what guys make on actual NIL deals but Dybantsa is reportedly the most at 4 mill. Good on them for asking i guess but that’s crazy

I’m pretty sure Braden Smith had at least one actionable offer at $3mil last season.  So if Fru remains in and ranked around 11th because the market is thin and everyone wants bigs, it wouldn’t surprise me if he got into the 2-3 mil range.

Is that how those work? Never played one. I could have just said it like that. Way faster.

And tell ya what, those schools that profiled their GM role as 1st foremost a scouting and identifying talent in the portal gig and hired some Asst Coach or ex-midmajor HC they liked got it wrong. You’d be better off hiring some Asst GM from MLB who doesn’t know a thing about basketball but is steeped in team sports mgmt. IU getting Carr was a freaking gift and that guy is gonna pay off huge over time.

He’s likely going to end up around 20th once everything shakes out
