2023 SF/PF Mackenzie Mgbako to INDI-F’N-ANA

Recommended Posts

42 pages in a very shortened recruitment.

If we are lucky enough, This one paired with Ware changes everything with Indiana's optics.  I mean that will grab the attention and splash of recruits (and me).

Pretty much every school wanted Ware. Pretty much every school would want Mgbako.

I think he could see the same amount of playing time at both schools. Where I think IU has the advantage is the amount of shots and plays that would be called for him over Kansas. Self has had a lot of big men that he’s played through, and he may have his best one yet. Just guessing without looking at any numbers of prior season stats but seems like he could get twice as many play calls and shots at IU over Kansas.

FWIW, Torvik has him getting 31 min/game at IU and 27 min/game at Kansas.

I'm not sure why multiple posters, including some of my absolute favorite ones (psst... @Demo) are saying there might be a minutes logjam at Kansas. They currently have a re-class freshman Adams and 6'4" Timberlake for that spot, with Morris and Harris as the likely starting guards.

So he would need to beat out Timberlake to start, no?

Any idea what was he projected to get at Duke?

Yeah that seems relatively negligible in my opinion when the argument some are making is that he won’t get as much playing time. While true, 27 mpg is still plenty. What does Torvik say for shots/points for each? I’ve never used the site so don’t know what’s all included as far as stats

Kansas boards are making the same point. They have no players at that spot with any college experience.

I’m not confident or pessimistic about this one. Just hoping for some good news. My whole theory is you need 4-6 “plus” players to do anything in March. Getting Mgbako would add one more.

This is something IU did that Kansas didn't. They had this flag hanging from his locker. The whole family flipped out about it especially his dad.

When you say "his" locker.  What do they usually do with lockers for recruits visiting?

Based on everything I have seen I just feel it's IU...why leave Duke to go to Kansas where it is more crowded. Very possible he would be the best player on IU next season. Just feels like there was a connection between the family and our staff. Hope we can close. Can't stress how huge this would be for not only this year but the '24 and '25 classes.

If we are the choice?

As soon as I saw that on his visit photo I thought "holy crap that's so so excellent! Then I Googled Mgbako's heritage and then Googled the Nigerian flag. Paydirt.

That's why I think that the one chance we have for the win here is because dad came on the visit and we were spot on in making a connection.

I think Woodson makes it really easy for parents to trust him and feel comfortable having their sons play for.  As successful of a career he has had, he comes off as a down to earth guy, will work their kids hard, and have their backs.

Other than the whole "Kansas, with a spot for significant playing time" thing lol.

Mgbako would get minutes and they could use his skillset, no question. The kid's really good. But, I guess it depends how you see their minutes breaking out and how that mixes with what we assume Mgbako's looking for. They have 5 guards who are gonna play a lot: Harris, Morris, Jackson, Timberlake and Johnson. Will be surprised if they aren't playing 3 guards almost all the time and 4 occasionally. Dickinson's gonna get 28-30, backed up by Udeh. Adams, as their best rebounder and most switchable defender, is gonna get 25. That just doesn't leave a ton of minutes, and I'm doing this off the top of my head, so that's assuming I'm not missing someone obvious. If he wants to be part of that team, I wouldn't blame him. That's a NC contender if the freshman guards hold up. But I just don't see a lot of minutes or shots there in comparison with IU literally having a specific need for a wing scorer. He walks into Bloomington with 25 mins on the table.
