I’m a teacher and coach- former student and player goes to Ole Miss of all places. He reached out this week to ask me if I thought IU would go for Beard. He said several things  but a couple of interest:

1. Well known there that Beard is/has been interested in IU.

2. He still has an alcohol problem. Students see him hammered out and about regularly in Oxford.

Thank you for sharing. I'd say no to Beard.

With a coach that did this.

You think the D2 guy is good?

I’ve got a guy for you that won multiple national championships while recruiting and coaching more than 50 NCAA Division-I scholarship athletes and more than 15 professional players including Kyrie Irving (#1 NBA pick 2011), Ben Simmons (#1 NBA pick in 2016 and NBA Rookie of the Year in 2018), Michael Kidd Gilchrest (#2 NBA pick 2012), Scottie Barnes (2022 NBA Rookie of the Year), Joel Embiid (2023 NBA Most Valuable Player) Samuel Dalembert, Cooper Flagg, Jalen Hood Schifino, and Al Harrington.

He’s won over 800 games at his level, had multiple seasons of three or less losses, frequently wins by more than 50 points, and both his teams and many of their top opponents have a higher level of talent than any team in D2 has ever had.

So are we also ready to hire Kevin Boyle away from Montverde?

Nothing alleged.  He spent a night in jail and she didn’t press charges.  Only thing alleged is he paid her off.  He lost his job.  People comparing him to Pearl or Sampson are the ones with a problem.  He won’t get the job because Whitten has a problem with Fitzgerald.  She definitely will have a problem with him.

Where there you go, there is no sense bickering about it.  I said it before and I will say it again, it’s not up to us, it’s up to Dolson and staff and if they hire him, I will support it

Umm… Fouls is a well respected poster on other forums. Think you are a little over the top here

I don’t know who he is.  Other than you posting here, I don’t know who you are.  I only post here.  I don’t get on other forums; therefore, I’ve never heard of him.

Yeah, my issue is less with play style and more his body of work (lack of years). They play 7 guys this year, 4 D2 transfers and a JUCO. He’s always played a slow pace but I think passing up fast breaks is somewhat intentional by design with this group. I am baking in an assumption that he would coach not like a carbon copy of this one year. He is still young so I would assume able to adapt on some level. He is smart enough I think to figure things out given time and resources. I think it’s a moot point anyway since he’s very unlikely to be hired IMO. Totally fair to not like passing up open shots, frustrates me too when I watch them.

I’m intrigued because the guy is a winner. What he did in D2 is awesome and what he has done this year is as well.
my issues are style of play and it not being fun to watch nor play in. If he won 30 game a year at IU I would overlook the paint drying. My fear beyond me being bored is that top talent would not want to play that way. I think if we are all being honest, he would need to land top 3, 4 and 5 star talent to succeed at this level and I just don’t see it. If I’m a blue chip talent I don’t want to do THAT

Not gonna lie it even spun me out at first, but I dont even remember what city I am in at this point of my "work week" but I really hope people wake up, see your ninja edit to fix the font tomorrow and think I time traveled backwards to somehow respond before you posted this.

Come on Stu.  Love the debate (even though I only have 125 posts), but winning at a basketball factory like Montverde, where the best of the best are funneled to your program every year is not the same as creating a dynasty using players rejected by 360+ D1 programs.

The guy is a tremendous coach, and elite coaching translates across levels.  Bob Knight was not hired away from UCLA, Texas, or Alabama.  He came from Army.

Even if Dolson and Whitten somehow didn't have a problem with him, he wouldn't be hired because of how it'd fracture the fan base. Just look at this site as an example of that.

I see no way he gets hired, thankfully.

Damn, not only are you 100% on point, that’s about as funny as it can possibly get.

Okay… hyperbole aside?

McCollum has been absolutely dominant in D2 and has had an excellent 2/3 of a year in the MAC, but that doesn’t remotely address the GM duties, personality juggling (and that includes boosters, agents, fans, media, and the BOT), and quality of opposition coaches he’d deal with in the B1G.

I see the attraction, but a guy like Buzz Williams is a zillion times better choice for me.

You want to see a pretty insane looking D2 resume, not quite McCollum, but getting there, is a guy named Jim Crutchfield, who coaches at Nova Southeastern. In the last 4 years he’s 120-5 with an elite 8, a Natty, a NC runner up(lost on a buzzer 3} and currently the #1 ranked D2 in the country. Difference from McCollum is he’s probably early 60’s. Apparently he’s a 40 mins of hell guy. They just pressure teams into submission.

There’s also the option of not getting offended when someone does not insult you, but disagrees with your opinion.

On the other hand, you criticizing @5fouls post count is a personal attack, so cut that crap out.

Stuhoo, I respect you and your post.  I’m am not trying to get into any argument over who our next coach will be.  I have said several times, if Dolson decides to hire Beard I will support it, I wasn’t criticizing him or least that wasn’t my intention.  But that goes all ways on this board.

I think this nails my biggest concern beyond the style which is whether kids with high major talent/NBA aspirations would want to play in it. It is one thing to run a system well in D1 with D2 talent, but as Stu has said repeatedly, this is against the little sisters of the poor. I am not convinced it translates against better athletes unless you can convince top end athletes to commit to it. So he either has to speed it up, or hope the system overcomes the talent or athletic disparity a la Bennet.

All good and appreciate the kind words.

However, this thread is specifically here to allow people to argue over the next coach will be! So if you play in this sandbox, that’s what you should expect.
