He didn't; he was at high majors, including Bama for extended time as an assistant.

When Cig became a head coach he rose up through multiple levels pretty quickly.

Cignetti started late but atleast kept moving up the ladder.  He wasn't at a d2 school for 14 years, 1 year at a low d1, then takeover notre dame.  People trying to capture that hire in a bottle by thinking every successful coach at the lower level will automatically succeed at the high major level is fooling themselves.

First off that was football so if it failed no big deal. Second just because it worked out in one case doesn't mean it will in another. Cig did not really have any pressure the bbsl job will be tremendous pressure from day one. This won't be a give them four years the get their guys. They will need to win and win fast.

Going from successful d2 years to a lower d1 and moving up is different than spending 14years at d1, 1 year at drake and then taking over Indiana.

Football is by far the biggest college sport and drives the financial results for the entire athletic dept.  Basketball barely moves the needle despite IU really liking basketball.  The football hire and how they perform is a very big deal for IU.

I don't know how he would recruit high-end players. I don't know how he would deal with agents/handlers/player circles/etc. I don't know how much his preferred tempo would increase with better athletes and personnel...I just know that I really like watching basketball and I watch a lot of it and I DO know that I really enjoy watching Drake play and watching Ben McCollum coach.

If McCollum ends up the coach at IU  anyone in the stands that wears a white dress shirt and red tie to match him  should get tossed automatically.   It was dumb when Maryland fans did it a couple years back and the Drake fans look dumb doing it now

We can't compare McCollum to Cignetti like we can't compare our football program to our basketball program. Its apples to oranges.

He didn’t. He’s taken consistent steps up since taking over IUP in 2011. Why do people keep comparing McCollum to Cignetti? The comparison only somewhat makes sense if you ignore everything pre-2011 for Cignetti, and even then it doesn’t.

In my limited experience Jeff Goodman has a good track record on Brad re: IU.  In ‘20 when NCAA games were played at Hinkle I asked him if he thought Brad was considering IU.  He just kinda laughed and said no way.  Was that a guess or did he know something?  Later that day the whole “Masshole” answer in the press conference came out.  Who knows.
