The loaded non conference schedule actually made me think Few may be behind it.

I believe it was RTZ that said earlier the scheduling has nothing to do with the new coach.

Simple:

Because we did not "let" Dusty May sign an extension.

  • Michigan believed in him as a P5 coach when IU did not.
  • He has had an unimaginably successful first season at Michigan.
  • He loves it there.
  • He has been offered a far more lucrative contract to stay.

Sounds pretty attractive for him and seems like IU missed their chance last year. Full stop.

I disagree but thats ok! i love hearing all sides of the argument.

I know its an unpopular opinion but those are my thoughts. Maybe its not brad? but i dont know how you let dusty sign that extension unless you think you have someone you consider a better option.

How you let dusty sign?  It is not like IU has any control over what he signs.  They can make it known they want him and will pay him whatever, but they cannot stop him from signing

Right? People are acting like Michigan isn't an appealing coaching situation...

I’ve been pretty clear about that. Random personal connection to someone close to Mark (I live in DMV area), and Mark has talked to IU about the HC job on more than one occasion. Where’s he at on the list, don’t know. Mark doesn’t even know. But there’s some level of interest.

Keep an open mind. It’s hard to get people to leave good jobs.

The interest is Mark Tugeron wants to coach again, no one wants to hire Mark Turgeron, and being mentioned in the same sentence as the open IU job is good for Mark Turgeron.

He and his agent held all of the bargaining chips.  UM had no idea if he was planning to take the IU job or not.  You may be right but I fully believe he could’ve gotten more money from UM.  A lot more probably.

I think if iu really wanted dusty they would get dusty. I figured everyone could use context clues to understand that but maybe not. In my opinion dusty would leave Michigan for iu if iu pursed him. i could be wrong.

Your random personal connection is trolling the crap out of you as badly as you’re trolling us. I have as much chance at being head coach as Turgeon.

You maybe right.  I prefer to live in a world where he knows we are getting a different coach that everyone loves and therefore his best move is to get more cash from Michigan

He did. That could be true. But if his source has no idea who the next coach is, it's hard to believe he knows for sure whether the scheduling is related to the new coach.

At a minimum, I think we can rule out an unproven mid-major (McCollum) with the type of schedule Dolson is building. So that's not nothing, to me.

I still wouldn't be surprised to see Turgeon on UNC staff in some capacity next season - he's been to a couple of UNC games, close with Davis and Roy Williams and I think there's going to be a lot of shakeup on UNC staff. Maybe asst to new GM?

Assistant to the regional manager of IU possibly?

Appreciated all this. I remember the personal connection but the rest of this detail is really helpful. Thanks for taking the time! If you need a reference to beat the “not Ant” allegations, I’m your guy. ;)

A lot of big names get tossed around but there’s this uneasy feeling I get from the idea of hiring a coach in the back 9 of their careers.

Agreed.

But, for fun, let's say IU can have it's choice of the following (for equivalent money with salary/buyouts). Who do you pick?

Few - Proven winner, but no title. Would likely be hungry to get over the hump here. Probably only has 8-10 years left, max, though.

Drew - Proven, national championship coach. But recent results slipping a bit. Does he still have the hunger? At 54, could be the guy for ~15 years.

Otzelberger- Never advanced beyond the Sweet 16, but has had immediate, impressive success at Iowa State. Clearly still hungry. Could be here 20-25 years if all goes well.

I've cracked the code. The DMV is on the East Coast and Gonzaga is on the West Coast. As DMV has been talking about Mark Turgeon, he's been expecting us to pick up on it being Mark Few all along!

....It has been well said a million times on here that Dolson has been working on this coaching search for over a year, maybe even secretly since Woodson was hired, knowing that he wouldn't be here long.

Anyway, if true, I can almost guarentee that if Dusty still hadn't signed an extention yet and at this point in the season, then many would wonder if it was Dusty even more.

IMO, Dusty didn't just get away, .....he was never at the top, better yet, probably wasn't even pursued at length, but I'm sure there were some mutual interests back and forth, but not much action.
