General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

It is possible I have just missed or misread things—the posts are flying fast. But it seems like @BehindTheBench may be combining or mixing up @Truthhurts and @MikeRoberts

Not a big deal—like I said, the posts are flying fast. But I believe the “0 percent” and the aggressive tone started with @Truthhurts. Which is fine, as far as it goes, but I think if @BehindTheBench knows there are at least a couple people arguing with him (and that it’s not a one on one duel to the death) then maybe we can all take a breath.

Not trying to meddle. It just seems as an outsider (heh) that some wires got crossed here and the wrong people are mad at each other.

I’m not going to reveal how I know on a public forum. That would be stupid. But what’s funny is no one requires or ask for proof of source when someone claims to have info that aligns with what they wish to be true.

Truth isn't wrong here.

SIAP, but why would TJ want out of Iowa Stare?  Do they have NIL issues?

NIL, salary, even pre-NIL ISU punched above its weight but IU recruited a station above it. B12 isn’t on the B1G or SEC level as far as $ goes due to football tv contracts.

The recent Crimson Cast episode on candidates, the second one, explained this in a good way. Basically non Big Ten / SEC schools lack not just NIL but also revenue sharing, and Galen (one of the hosts) said a lot of Big 12 type coaches might want to jump.

Galen also pointed out that Otz’s wife, his much mentioned tie to Iowa State since she played there, is from Australia originally.  So maybe the ties aren’t that deep? Who knows, but given his youth I’d take TJ over anyone other than the Melville character.

I really hope IU can do better than a guy who's had just a good season or two.  I don't want guys with pretty clear ceilings.   I think Otzelberger, Williams, Cronin, and some others are okay, but does anyone thing any of those guys ever has a chance to be great?     Here for 20 years; 6-8 Big Ten titles, 3-4 final fours, etc?   I'm used to having unpopular takes but it would feel like settling to me if we hired any of those guys.

I like the idea of Chris Collins with more resources and better players..I think he'd be really good here.

I like the idea of Brad Brownell because he's from Indiana and was a high school team mate of Calbert Cheaney (who I REALLY want IU to keep)

I like the idea of Ben McCollum or Josh Schertz because I think both have high ceilings.  And both fit the Cignetti mold.

I'd love Chris Beard and he'd crawl to Bloomington.   If IU can look past the allegations.....yes, please

One man's opinion.

Rabby said our NIL is more appealing, didn’t really elaborate any further.

That would make sense.  Everything I’ve read about him, which truthfully hasn’t been a ton, is that he’s happy in Ames, good personal situation there, and wife is an alum.  Signed an extension with smaller buyout (which seems a tad odd).

I would guess IUs NIL is very attractive to candidates.

Thanks. Makes sense why he’d be interested. Mega pay day and possible better chance at long-term, sustainable success. I suppose I’ve always thought b12 coaches were well compensated, but looks like it’s just the very top ones.

Bloomington > Ames imo too.  And he’s from Milwaukee, so no true Iowa ties (besides his wife is alum).

I still wonder, however, IF Dolson would’ve had an agreement from him already. Big IF.  And that’s a whole different bag of speculation.

thx again. He’s more realistic than I thought and it may be more mutual than I realized

Good stuff here.  Thx.    I don’t think I realized how mutual this match could be.

John Fanta, with Field of 68 and Fox Sports, went on Pardon My Take and predicted Otzelberger to IU. Just interesting after Goodman's comments Friday night and Rabjohns tonight. You may not like them, but the Field of 68 is probably the best there is at covering our sport (give them a shot. It's not just Goodman on there). Not saying it'll be TJ. It's just worth keeping an eye on. TJ I think would be as close to a "grand slam" hire as we could get. His teams the last few years have improved so much offensively. My only concern is they have a legit Final Four contending team. I just don't see a coach taking a team to the final four and leaving that same year. Kind of hope they make Sweet 16 and get beat for that sake.

I agree 100 percent, if the Stevens stuff doesn't work out, Otz would be my next top pick! I expect Dolson to ask for my input anyday!!! lol

IMO, Collins would be phenomenal.  Deep down, I think he woukd want it too.

I listen to him all the time on Chicago radio and it’s apples to oranges compared to Woodson (and Archie - whom I really liked as the hire at the time). Collins absolutely has the personality for iu.  Very relatable.  Talks like a dude we can all relate to.

Ugh your brown brownell want is how we ended up with woody though. i think otzelberger would be here 20 years yes. You’re guaranteed a top 5 defense with him and at least the last two years he’s had top 40 offenses so I’d like to think he’s figured it out on that end. Those are lofty goals tho. How many coaches go to 4 final fours in 20 years?

Guaranteed?   I disagree.

Lots of elite coaches go to 4 final fours in 20 years.  If you believe we can't achieve that, you already lose.  Here are a few recent examples

Bill Self

Tom Izzo

Mike Krysiewski

Roy Williams

'Jim Boeheim

Jim Calhoun

John Calipari

Rick Pitino

Billy Donovan

Jay Wright

Hell...Ben Howland went to 3 in a row.  That's not a lofty or unreasonable goal at Indiana.

I’m 27 now and there has been one final 4 in my life. I’ll settle for one and I’m willing to guarantee the top 5 defense. He’s had a top 10 defense every year at Iowa st and i assume he’d get better players with us
