General Coach Candidate News

Yes because they are smart. They know he is a hell of a coach and would win big here. They also probably root for a school who if they had a chance to land a home run like beard it would happen. However the joke is on them! We are iu and will not hire a top coach because he made mistakes in the past!

Nope won't be considered. No second chances at iu.

Kentucky is a fishbowl. Pope is having no problems handling it. It's a weird (and bad) excuse for mediocre coaches to fall back on when they don't succeed here.

The right coach will embrace it. Aside from his recruiting issues, Tom Crean is probably the only coach since Bob Knight to properly handle the fish bowl here. In my opinion he did an incredible job with fan engagement during his time with the program, especially the first three years when we were @$$. He failed here for other reasons.

Popes in his honeymoon phase. At this point in Woodys tenure everyone loved him too.

UK isn’t even in the top half of the SEC. Another yer like this one next year and we’ll see how good he is at the fishbowl aspect. They’ll run him out of town too.

It would be a dark day for the university to hire Beard. The university is better than hiring a woman beater to be its highest paid employee.

They won’t do it.
Guilty until proven innocent!! Got it.

Puts more pressure on the new coach however if the next coach wins big then missing out on Dusty May last cycle won’t be a big deal however miss on this hire and May continues to build Michigan up then it becomes a very big deal.   IU is going to get a very good coach this cycle

Don’t underestimate IU’s ability to f**k up a vitally important basketball hire.

Why did Louisville and UK pass on Beard?

I know people have alluded to things. There HAS to be more out there about him than the general public is aware.

Good luck getting that answer, it's "I know someone who said this about him" and "I heard from such and such about this thing he did that one time back in this one place".

Does it not stand to reason that those schools found something that disqualified him from their consideration? And therefore IU may reasonably draw the same conclusion?

Exactly.  But with that said, there just has to be some truth to something or else he’d be in the state of Kentucky somewhere.

I don’t think Cronin is a bad coach. He’s just in lower tier than beard IMO.

He was 16-17 last year (his 5th year) at UCLA

if Cronin goes 16-17 his fifth year at IU the student section will be chanting “fire Cronin” and leaving at halftime

Cronin just isn’t a fit IMO.  Personality is abrasive (can’t imagine Dolson would enjoy that in the athletic office everyday), he whines a lot, UCLA fans don’t show up to watch his teams.  Positive would be I am sure UCLA wouldn’t be too sad to see him leave, so might get a negotiated deal on the buyout.  But guys like him will wear on you.  And his personality isn’t going to change just by coming here.  I have heard that he was very interested in the Louisville job last season and they passed.

Having said that….I’ll take him anytime over Brad Brownell

Like what? Police reports beyond the obvious or rumor and speculation? I'm not going to go too deep in the weeds on the Beard stuff but I'm not going to act like I know something about what other universities did or didn't do and why they didn't hire a particular coach. There are enough on this message boards that feel comfortable doing that

I'm convinced that the appeal of Beard for some people has nothing to do with coaching (because his record isn't that good). It's about the perception that he is an alpha, along with some kind of cultural/social signaling about not caring about the DV incident and his other baggage.

I’m torn between wanting to see Stevens at IU and hoping that meteor hits us 10 years early. Cannot tell you how much I’m self-medicating via this coaching search.

Perhaps, maybe not though. I'm in no position to know why Kentucky didn't hire him or rather why they chose to go with someone else

I can guarantee there are a ton of good coaches who have not choked their fiancée to passing out and spent the night in jail for it.   JFC.  If I ever do that, please nobody hire me.

Allegedly!  Charges were dropped and I got news for you, we aren’t deciding who our next coach will be.  I believe that will be Dolson and staff!

Chris Beard (age 52) career record 275-117 (.703) conference records:

  • Heartland conference: 10-8 (.556)
  • Lone Star conference 19-9 (.679)
  • Sun Belt conference 17-3 (.850)
  • Big 12 w/ TTU 49-40 (.551)
  • Big 12 w/ Texas 10-8 (.556)
  • SEC 15-16 (.484)

Mick Cronin (age 53) career record 499-232 (.683) conference records:

  • Ohio Valley: 42-10 (.808)
  • Big East / AAC: 135-87 (.608)
  • Pac 12 / Big 10: 78-35 (.690)

Another candidate for comparison

Buzz Williams (age 52) career record 370-223 (.624) conference records

  • Sun Belt conference 9-9 (.500)
  • Big East: 69-39 (.639)
  • ACC: 44-46 (.489)
  • SEC: 54-41 (.568)

It’s also a lot easier to win at UCLA than it is at Ole Miss which has to be taken into consideration. For me it’s 1. Who is a better recruiter 2. Who will target high school players because Indiana has wayyy too many good ones to be portal hunting only 3. WHO is good at X’s and O’s. IMO there is a reason Calapari isn’t great at Arkansas and it has to do with him being a bad X’s and O’s guy and now that playing field is even and he can’t cheat for 5 stars he’s struggling. 4. Who could be here for 15-20 years and not wear out their welcome. If IU got tired of Crean I don’t see how Cronin wouldn’t wear out his welcome 5-6 years into it since he’s not afraid to call out his players or the fans which won’t go over well here.

I refuse to take the bait on Beard’s history, but I wonder if this forum should allow the bait in the first place. The charges were dropped and the complaint recanted, so it borders on defamation to allow people to accuse him as if he was found guilty. I am not even sure that legally the school can use these allegations against him?

That is all I am saying on the issue since I was not present and have no idea what happened that evening.

For my money if this gets by Drew at this point, I go straight to McCollum.

I know his offense isn’t quite the change of pace we’re hoping for but his resume is something i’m absolutely willing to take a chance on.

His resume is devoid of any P5 experience, and all but devoid of D1 experience.

Tell me why he’s not Ray Harper part 2.
