We can find a bunch of examples of guys who were really good at lower levels—even meeting this criteria—and failed in the big leagues. 
 

It might be a decent filter for guys like Archie though, who was in 2nd place for single season wins at Dayton when we hired him. He’s now in 3rd as Anthony Grant holds the record, who himself washed out at Alabama. 

Also, fwiw, Brad Brownell fits this criteria.

Tyme sure seems to think it will be Cronin.  His comparison to Jay Wright at this point in their careers really isn’t far off.

At first I was not a fan of even suggesting Cronin...but I'm coming around on it. I don't love it, but I don't hate it now either. Polar opposite from Woodson with regard to pretty much everything, so that would be a good start....

It certainly feels like someone where we would end up. Do we know the details of his buyout at this point? Why would we throw so much cash at Cronin?

The more I see stuff about Dusty, the more I hope we get him. Just seems like such a good dude, loves ball, and what he has done so far at Michigan is insane. Sitting at the top of the conference his first year with a bunch of kids he put together as a new team. I’d love to have Brad for obvious reasons, but it gets to the point where how long are we fine with having to bribe and beg someone to take a job where someone else could provide the same results and would crawl back to Bloomington to be our coach? 
 

Being able to get Brad is a no brainer if he truly wants the job, but heck, I REALLY hope it’s Dusty.

He supposedly has a high buyout but many seem to think UCLA would let him go for less.  Doesn’t sound like he’s happy out there and is probably a bad fit personality wise for LA.

I sat courtside Friday night. I was impressed with how fundamentally sound they were but it just seemed OK to me. He would be an OK hire but he isn't going to be anyone who gets the whole fanbase behind him. He going to lose the Beard people really fast, then he will lose the Dusty people.

74-75 season. Would have been Birds freshman year too had he stayed.

Not sure about that.  It has been noted that Crean allegedly did not get along with Indiana high school coaches.  And he offered scholarships to anyone that made eye contact.  Quite the salesman, yes.  At some point we all realized that he did have that gift...the gift to oversell/overhype.  He worked very hard but really didn't come across as good with X's and O's as Sampson or Knight.  Defense was hard for him to get his arms around or across to the players.  

Keep him away from the recruiting. (While he could get some recruits, he seemed to not follow through with others.  Hence was felt to be...ahem...less believable by coaches and recruits.) 

Not sure if boosters would love it.

I lived in Wisconsin and researched him way back when.  While he and Wade were brilliant together at Marquette....I believe that was on Wade not Crean.  And then some really bristled up there about his bait and switch on recruits.  He also is a little to quirky...but who isn't?  Zeller choosing IU saved Crean's job for years.  

Obviously, others felt differently.
