General Coach Candidate News

Of course, just hire a great coach. Should have thought of that. 2 things: 1) Every single great coach in the history of sports, not 1 exception, has at some point in their career not been viewed as great. So, are you comfortable with hiring a guy that has great traits but has yet to actually be great? Example: You’d take Nate Oats, right? When Bama hired him he’d coached 4 years in the MAC, won 1 conference title and 2 NCAA tournament games and that was his resume. Anybody who says they knew he was great is lying their a$$ off. You willing to take a shot on a resume like that? 2) If no, how are you poaching a guy already viewed as great? To paraphrase the legendary Noho Hank from Barry, “You want to stand outside Great Coach Hotel with help wanted sign?” Those guys have giant buyouts, massive cache and all the resources they could want, otherwise they wouldn’t still be where they are. You ain’t just writin’ a big check and stealing one of those guys.  To me, it’s not complicated. 1) You identify the traits you believe are necessary to succeed in your specific environment, 2) You identify candidates who possess those traits, 3) You gauge interest and proceed accordingly. It’s not complicated. It’s also not easy.

There is no guarantee of greatness, but there are those who are on an upward trajectory with the potential for greatness, & then there are those that have shown consistently for years that they are not great.  I’d rather not settle for known good, but never great.

Agree!
I agree as well, but it also depends on how he chooses to use his faith. Not to get into a faith based discussion at all but some Christians feel called to be around like-minded people to share in fellowship, some Christians feel called to be out sharing their faith with others in places that are not cut from the same cloth as them, others feel called to a mix of both. It would all depend on where his family feels that should be after taking onto consideration their prayer life and calling. I could see him saying "no way" but I could also see him seeing IU and Bloomington as a place where he maybe see as a community where he could impact with his faith. No idea...

My first thought after reading this is, because you know Dolsen already has a verbal agreement from the new HC.

Haha Goodman already cleared that up for us. ;-) I think Michigan knows they can’t get in a bidding war with us.

Unless Dusty doesn't let them lock him up. If IU is a dream job for him there's not much more they could offer financially compared to IU to make him turn it down. It all depends on him.

I guess the longer he goes without signing the extension the better for us

Man that's refreshing after listening to Woodson talk basketball. The man also is just aware, and while it's certain he does his homework on opponents it sounds like he's specifically aware of the situation at Indiana.

Disclaimer: I'm not a Cronin shill. Not an anyone shill, really. Just pro-guys that can run a disciplined, hard-nosed and intelligent basketball program.

I'm in the minority but I'd take him. He's proven he knows how to coach kids to win, but seems like one of those guys still waiting for a big break and under the current college basketball landscape IU is primed to be that program that can help elevate him.

People say hire a coach for their future, not their past. But the best predictor of future behavior (success, in this instance) is past behavior. He's not the sexiest hire largely because of his personality but two of the most successful coaches we've experienced at IU haven't exactly been sweeties themselves. It's not a beauty contest anyway. It's about finding who can consistently put your program in a position to win. He's one of those.

I gotta say, his honesty is very refreshing.  That interview definitely shifts how I would think about him as an option. Love his view on the 1 day turnaround games being prep for the NCAA tournament. It’s also great that he views the season as prep for the NCAA tournament. The B1G needs more coaches that think and recruit that way, rather than building rugby teams and counting on terrible home court refereeing advantages.

If it keeps signing you out try clearing your search history and then log back in.  That has worked for me in the past

The question I would love to have an answer to is: Would Dusty have signed with Michigan if his buyout was $10M, because either he demanded that or Michigan just didn’t push for a high buyout?

Am coming more onboard with Cronin with more digging; think UCLA has a very poor level of support compared to what IU would offer. If it gets past May, think they could do worse. Cincinnati hasn't been the same since he's left.

Yes. It keeps giving me hope that Brad Stevens will be the next head coach, so something is off somewhere.
