I would highly recommend the first 30 minutes of CurryHicksSage’s #searchSZN last night: https://twitter.com/curryhickssage/status/1889142509701365822?s=46

He talks at a high level about how all this works and then gets into his thoughts on IU. He’s plugged into Cbb coaching circles but is open that he doesn’t have any particular unique connections at IU.

Two guys he mentions that we haven’t discussed much here that I think are strong:

1. Todd Golden. Cleared of the non-criminal Title IX charge at UF, team is currently top 5 on Kenpom and top 10 in both O and D. 39 years old. CHS characterizes the charges as “being horny online” so you’d think if there were, e.g. unsolicited Richard pictures he might’ve been found liable even if the sanction was something much less than losing his job. Wonder if a fresh start in a new place might appeal.

2. Pat Kelsey. I find his schtick somewhat annoying but it seems *genuine*, quick turnaround at UL, not paid lots there so would be an easy get.

I love Dusty, so I don’t say this lightly, but to me these are coaches IU would do well to pursue if they can’t get the very tip top of the list

I feel like there’s zero chance Kelsey leaves Louisville. He’s all in with them or a great actor. Also think there’s zero chance golden leaves because why would he. He has no ties to Indiana and has Florida rolling. He’ll get a nice raise to stay

Just going on record for me personally since we're in a new search, I don't believe much of that happened last time. It wasn't close, he was never coming last time.

I know you worked for the C's and likely still have connections there.  Seeing how you have been definitive in your responses makes me wonder if you are getting this directly from BS or his family.  IF the Chris version of last time is correct, I don't think Brad would have discussed this with anyone within the Celtics organization during the process.  I have changed jobs 6 times and I keep all those discussions private until I have accepted a job and past the background checks.

Clearly you have heard something that suggests a different version occured.  Did BS have any discussions with IU?  Generally curious to hear your side beyond just saying the other version did not happen.

Sure, I think those are worthwhile questions. As for Kelsey, UL is not in a great spot financially; I’m sure they could give him a raise but IU can absolutely outspend them and provide more NIL.

Golden could just want a fresh start after the accusations, could want to be at a place with more resources for bball, etc.

According to some folks’ logic here, despite what we believe we all saw for many years, Roy Williams didn’t really coach at North Carolina.  I mean, he was offered the North Carolina job in 2000 and turned it down, so there’s “0% chance” he would have taken it in 2003 when he was offered again.  Absolutely nothing would have changed in those three years.

Roy Williams didn’t quit his coaching job and take a non-coaching job during those three years, and he also was a UNC alum. Brad Stevens has no connection to IU, he quit coaching entirely, and he’s turned the job down multiple times. He left the college game over a decade ago and reportedly didn’t like recruiting when he was in it.

Was impressed with UF in their game against Auburn. I would think that a fresh start would be an appeal to get away from the accusations but my concern would be fans not being happy about IU hiring him even though he was cleared.

Idk basketball is king there and they’ve been starving for a good coach after Payne. I feel like there’s no chance they let one get away. These SEC schools have a lot of money and resources also but maybe I’ll get surprised because golden is a great young coach

Reminder....Jerry mentioned wayyyyyyy back 1000 posts ago in the retire Woodson thread that "we have our guy" and that we would know before the tournament starts....either he was wrong OR most likely someone NOT coaching in the tournament. It looks like most of the coaches mentioned will be in the tournament, including May, Pearl, Beard, McCollum, Drew, etc....Jay Wright, Brad Stevens and Billy Donovan only 3 mentioned that will definitely not be coaching in the tournament this year. Am I missing anyone? I mean unless its a D2 coach....or, lord help us, Randy Wittman....

Yea I don’t doubt that, but that doesn’t answer my question of where this weird narrative that Dusty negotiated a smaller buyout to be able to bolt to IU after one season came from. Of all the stuff we throw around here, UL turning down his “buyout demand” is maybe the silliest. He pretty clearly chose Michigan over UL and Vandy—not Michigan was the only school willing to agree to a small IU buyout clause.  I can’t find anything to support that.

I have been asking this same question and have not gotten an answer.  Michigan may have had that low because he was not a sure fire guy at this level and wanted an offramp if he could not reproduce the FAU results.

You beat me to it. My COO has openly interviewed and been head hunted for a couple CEO positions elsewhere. It was never a secret. Our organization understands we will lose an amazing COO if our CEO doesn’t retire before he feels the need to move on. It’s not uncommon at all.

Absolutely. Depending on the organizational culture, the role, etc. the number of people aware may vary - we recently had a VP leave for a SVP position at a competitor; the SVP he worked for was very aware of the conversations but lower-level executives and managers were not.

Also, we tend to assume with some of our inside information that everyone in everyone organization knows everything. The number of people at the Celtics who know all the details about Stevens may be very small, and the BOT at IU almost certainly are unaware of most of the conversations Dolson is having with different candidates.

Other than potential money, and I don't see them breaking the bank at IU for either, what would be the incentive?

Both schools have great basketball history and access to high level recruits. Never been to UL campus, but Gainesville is a great college town, in a better climate, and no taxes. When UF was down a few years back, they don't draw like bad IU but there is also not the delusional fanbase of IU, so that is a plus. Fans fill the place  when they are good.

I think to get a younger guy that has it rolling it will be one that has is in place that has known limitations, TJ at ISU or Hoiberg at Neb types. I could see an older guys like Few being interested after years of being great but in a limited situation.

I think the ACC circling the drain could certainly see a coach like Kelsey looking for a golden parachute to the B1G or SEC. I don’t think UL gets considered for either if FSU and UNC leave the ACC. Most likely end up in the Big12, which has a nice media deal.

It could’ve been that. It could be that Dusty knew that iu could be in the situation they are in this offseason since he was in active talks with Dolson last offseason. I tend to believe it was the latter and Mich simply caved bc they were extremely desperate to get back on track.

if you've driven through Louisville on 65... you've been to UL campus
