Popular Post cybergates Posted March 17, 2021 Popular Post Posted March 17, 2021 SIAP HSN transplant here. Didn't know until yesterday that BS's dad played FB at IU on the Rose Bowl team. Looking into that led me to this article from 4 years ago: https://www.cantonrep.com/sports/20170421/boston-celtics-coach-has-roots-in-stark-county Couple of quotes that stood out to me: In the early 1980s, when most 5-year-olds spent their mornings watching Bugs Bunny or Scooby Doo, Brad Stevens would watch taped basketball games before going to afternoon kindergarten. “I remember (later) he had a tape of the 1987 IU (national) championship basketball game and he literally wore that tape out,” said his father, Mark Stevens, a 1966 graduate of Hoover High School. He literally watched our last NCAA championship game so many times that he wore it out. Incredible fandom. “He always turned them (NBA teams) down because whenever he talked to his college coach from DePauw, Bill Fenlon, he’d say, ‘Stay at Butler. It’s not the Celtics calling,’” Mark said. “When Danny Ainge called on July 4, 2013, it was like, ‘My god, it is the Celtics.’” This leads me to believe he isn't the NBA lifer that some suggest. He didn't take any NBA job, he only took a premiere one. Doesn't sound like a guy who wants to be a retread coaching multiple NBA teams over his career if it doesn't work out in Boston. He's a smart enough guy that can see that is a possibility and if it happens when the IU job isn't open, what does he do? That's why he has to consider and decide on the IU job this time around since things aren't going as well as they were for him 4 years ago. mamasa, dwtaylor1055, VO5 and 6 others 9

They're getting nervous fellas. https://purdue.forums.rivals.com/threads/are-there-any-minority-candidates-being-considered-for-the-iu-job.208649/ Nice...great to hear from the crew that has had a combination of Gene Keady and Pork Belly over the past 40 years - and I would guess similar in the program's entire history prior. The most diverse thing about those two has been Keady's hair piece!

Although I will say it went from like 5% to 20% for me......still not good odds. Anyhow I'm going to start putting a couple coaches against each other that seem similar in some way and I'd like to hear who you guys would rather have. Let's start with: Nate Oats vs Eric Musselman Sent from my Pixel 3a XL using Tapatalk Good question. Musselman has NBA head coaching experience, so advantage to him there. Everything else I'd have to give to Oats. Oats is 10 years younger, plays a more attractive style to recruits, and appears to recruit a little better. Overall I'd give the advantage to Oats, but I'd be happy with either one. FWHoosier84 and rcbowla 2
rcbowla Posted March 17, 2021 Posted March 17, 2021 Thad Matta vs John BeileinThis one is also tough for me. If Matta is healthy enough then it's a no brainer but his back worries me. My issue with Beilein is he'd be a band-aid that would have to be removed in 5-7 years and then there would be no guarantee his successor could maintain the trajectory. I'd still go with Matta because I believe he could get an incredible staff that could help minimize his health problems i.e. on the recruiting trail, practices etc.Sent from my Pixel 3a XL using Tapatalk

It really didn't have anything to do with what the administration wants. What does the administration want?

Why this one is tough is because Drew has proven he can take nothing and make it very good. He has also landed and utilized elite recruits which Beard really has not. May not be any of Beard's fault but it's the reality. Still lean Beard though. Sent from my Pixel 3a XL using Tapatalk Agree with you. I wanted Beard when Archie was hired, He just looked like an up-and-coming star back then. I'm a bit concerned he hasn't been able to sustain that extra-high level with his own roster, but it's Texas Tech. Nobody is going to win big every year there. Drew has had rebuilding years at Baylor, too. I'd prefer Beard, but again would be happy with both. rcbowla 1

Popular Post JerryYeagley23 Posted March 17, 2021 Popular Post Posted March 17, 2021 Couple bread crumbs. Talks and back channel work in full swing (and have been for weeks). Musselman to his credit fully transparent that he has aspirations of getting back to the NBA, Dolson isn’t looking to be a stepping stone. Beard has a big family all living in Texas and his three daughters want him to stay in TX - also Beard’s connection to Coach Knight are being overplayed. Beard was under CBK during some years when Bobby had nothing but bad things to say about IU. That connection isn’t the positive some are making it out to be. Stay tuned.
