Homer Drew - Doh

Scott Drew -  Republic

I hope he is pining for the IU job, that would be amazing

Drew or Beard or maybe Shaka. I'm kidding about Shaka but I hope someone is correct.

Let’s say Scott Drew is indeed contacting IU behind the scenes with interest in the job...is he someone Dolson would consider a serious candidate and make his job of getting rid of Archie easier knowing he’s got him on the line?

Two things that I was told yesterday. Tom Allen's raise was announced because it was the day before spring practice started. Also, his raise just added 80K to the monthly finances. But even though Archie buyout is over 3 years, IU has to account for the whole 10 million on the books for debt obligation. That would add $280K on the books each month. So something to think about. Not sure if it is a big deal or not.

Sounds like a bunch of crappy excuses. It won't be pretty if Archie is kept. It'll be the end of Indiana basketball.

I can't get excited about Scott Drew.  Can't say I know everything about Baylor but their offense looks very NBA'ish.

Yeah he gets to March Madness but he hasn't had much luck there. One more elite eight than Archie. We want another CTC with Sweet 16's and second round appearances?

I don't see much potential in a Scott hire. I think he's peaked. Of course we can all say "it's better than Archie" Okay sure but we're making a full on circle with CTC level success. We need a coach with at least an ounce of potential.

Certainly sensitive to the idea that it’s important to get the hire right, but I think you have to answer two different questions if it’s your call:

1. Is Archie the guy long-term?
2. What’s better (or worse) if you keep the status who?

You can imagine a situation a la 2016 where the answer to #1 is “likely not,” but also where the answer to #2 is it would be silly to move on in the moment.

However, to me things are in such a spiral, big picture, that while you want to really nail the hire and you worry about missing, there are a number of candidates who could make it work for ten or fifteen years, maybe longer, even if they don’t stay until retirement.

It would be nice to have a fifteen year, “Roy Williams at Kansas” kind of run, even if you don’t get Coach K, is my point.

I don't believe my fandom can last another year of the worst coach in Indiana history.

It'll be a year of minimal watching for me, more than likely. Our games are a grind to get through. I find little enjoyment in watching Archie ball. Even the wins aren’t enjoyable a lot of the time. I just don't know why they would bring him back if the buyout money is there. Just look at his results:

     T-6th, 9th, T-10th, T-10th in the conference.

     Zero winning conference seasons.

33-44 record in the Big 10.

     0-7 against Purdue

     Zero NCAA tournament appearances

Worst recruiting class in the conference coming in.

We either fire him after this season or we fire him after the next one. Does Scott Dolson really want to go through another season like the past four? There's little reason to believe next year will be any better than this one. Waiting a year saves money but it sets us back quite a bit in recruiting. Firing him after this season makes the most sense, imo, because of the free transfer season we're having after this season. A new coach could step in this year and put together a good roster through transfers. Wait until next year and it'll be several years before we're competing again. Fan apathy will only get worse in that situation.

Just to compare some winning percentages of names that have been thrown around.

Chris Mack .687 51 years old

Chris Beard .708 48 years old

Scott Drew .631 50 years old

Tony Bennett .729 51 years old

Steve Alford .652 56 years old

Thad Matta .740 53 years old

Jon Beilein .637 68 years old

For comparison Archie has a .632 career winning percentage and a .540 at IU.

I am with you. It just doesn't make sense to bring him back knowing you are going to fire him in one year. That is bad for all parties, including Archie. He would have to have a MAJOR year next year to get any kind of leeway with the fans.

It should be over regardless of the finances.

I don't think we could go wrong with Beard or Mack. They're motivators and their teams love them much like our football team rallies behind Tom Allen. I think that's the kind of guy we need to bring in. Tony Bennett could be on that list too but he's not leaving VA.

Love this. because IMO you need to hire someone who has had a 67% or higher with power 5 coaching experience. That is where we went wrong with Archie, he didn't have the power 5 part

If I was Dolson and Mack really is interested I would hire him ASAP and even pack for him and Archie. He has proven he can make the tournament in multiple conferences, he has a winning track record with experience, and he has shown he can recruit in Indiana. Not to mention he could be the long term answer that IU has been looking for.

Barring an absolute miracle he’d be gone after next year. And that miracle probably isn’t happening because our roster just won’t be good enough. He’ll be a dead man walking all year next year, and he and everyone else will know it. IU would essentially be punting on the 2021-2022 college basketball season. Just seems like a toxic and completely avoidable situation.

Crean would still be at IU if he would have been more consistent in making the dance. That’s the minimum bar. Be I. The tournament 9/10 years. Can’t make runs without being in.
